I love playing games by e-mail! I can log in during the day and take a few minutes to make my move. I don't have any trouble finding people to play with. I don't have to set aside a large block of time, or coordinate with friends to schedule time to play. A web server handles all of the dirty work of making sure I had the rules right, keeping score, keeping track of who's turn it is, etc. I don't get frustrated when another player takes ten minutes to figure out what his next move is. And I can learn the fine points of how to play a game and figure out some basic strategies.

Not all games are particularly well-suited to the medium, of course:
* Games with real-time elements, like, say, Modern Art and its open auctions. I would games with negotiation (like Metropolis) in this category, too.
* Games where tracking the game flow is important; for me, Tigris & Euphrates with hidden victory points doesn't work very well this way. (With open holdings, though, it's great!)
* Games where players can interrupt the flow of the game, as in the veto rounds in Stephenson's Rocket.
* Party & dexterity games.
* Memory games. Either the website will record the moves for you, or anybody can easily keep track of the moves privately. And even if you don't try to "cheat" that way, the game takes too long to keep anything in your head.
* Deduction games. One of the attractions of deduction games is trying to figure things out quickly; if you have all the time in the world, it's not nearly as fun.

I'll add more detail to what does or doesn't make a good play-by-email game as I think of it, or as people suggest things to me.

I really love Fresh Fish, but I have a lot of trouble getting it to the table. A play-by-web version would also solve the problem of analyzing the board after each tile placement to determine where roads belong. The only thing that seems questionable about implementing this is the auctions; but since they aren't open, that doesn't seem like to much of a hindrance.

Age of Steam would be a very ambitious project. There is a lot of detail in the rules. There is a lot of information that would have to be presented to the user -- perhaps a tabbed interface would work (one tab has the board, another tab has the scoring track sheet, another tab has the turn order sheet). And games would take a while, just like in face-to-face play. But it would allow me to play this game more often. And adding the expansions would be a relative snap! Plus, every time I've played this I've found some minor rule I interpreted incorrectly or just left out completely -- an online implementation would cure me of that...

I really enjoy Carcassonne. I can envision an online version that would allow you to include any or all expansions as you saw fit. If Age of Steam is a rich meal, this would be candy. I like both.

Another fun light game, Ticket to Ride would be a good candidate for this type of play.

Union Pacific is an excellent game for online play. Lots of accounting, discrete turns. A friend of mine actually developed a play-by-email program for Union Pacific as a programming project, but never released it because of copyright concerns. It was quite good. If anyone is interested in running with that project, I'm sure he'd be interested in talking to you.

El Grandé! It takes a long time to play face-to-face, you have to analyze a lot of stuff before you make your move, etc. The only drawback is that the castle adds a slight memory element; that would have to become public information in my opinion.

Magna Grecia--my favorite game with subtle strategies that make it more than just a building/resource allocation game.

I have some friends here who I'd LOVE to play with! (You know who you are )

Torres would probably make a good PBEM game. The turn number is fixed and the players' turns are discrete, so a game would easily finish in 2 weeks. And it offers enough mental challenge to spend a few minutes on it every day.

(If there should already exist a PBEM version of Torres pardon my lack of knowledge and point me to it, please )

Hansa is a great game and would make a great PBEM implementation. The only problem with the face to face version that I will grant is that you typically can not plan your turn until it's actually your turn. PBEM is the answer.
