I love game expansions. I crave variety. The more options the better. Expansions give you variety, more options and more strategies to figure out. If a game has an expansion it says two things to me. 1) The game is good enough to warrant an expansion. 2) It is a well supported game and there might be even more expansions on the horizon. A good expansion makes an old game new again.

I have been collecting expansions since 1978. That's 25 years of finding, creating, cutting & pasting, buying and playing with game expansions. Here is my list of the very best expansions.

The Outer Ring for Talisman. About 4 years ago I was able to find the Outer Ring from Kulkmann's Gamebox. It is a board that fits around the regular Talisman board and gives you 28 more locations to explore. Cool sites like the Tower of Ultimate Evil, Bandit Fortress, Ghost Town, Peat Bog, Endless Ocean, Monestary of Pure Good are just a few places that allows your heroes to encounter new adventures and bulk up for the final test.

Alan Moon's expansions for 1830 that appear in The General issue 23.6 add a new railroad (The Reading) and breathe new life into this old classic.

The jump by itself is worth the cost. Add a hourglass and another tight spot and your slick, speedy track becomes a whirl of groans, cuss words and crashes.

I've got Daytona 500. The rules say to race three times and the winner is the player with the most money after the three races. Why race the same track three times? Buy Detroit-Cleveland Grand Prix, get two extra tracks and race on three different tracks!

I've introduced Settlers to many different groups who have gone out and bought Settlers and then introduced it to their own groups. So, I get asked to play Settlers a lot. For my sanity I've purchased Das Buch for the variants. The Volcanoes, Jungles, Dragons, Factories, etc add just enough to the game without changing it too much, so I can sneak them in and get a little variety in my Settlers gaming without going nuts from playing the regular version 47 billion times.

Banzai added the Japanese and British. Desert War added the French and Italians. With seven nationalities to choose from that's a lot of different battles to be fought in every theatre of WWII.

Lord of the RIngs is different from any game out there and much different than I expected. But I must agree with the master. LotR should be about cooperation towards destroying The One Ring rather than hobbits pounding on each other trying to win by themselves.

This expansion and The Sauron expansion are my cup of tea. They add more options and variety to an already outstanding game.

Forget Spice Harvest and The Duel. The best expansion for Dune is adding The Lansraad and the Ixians (I don't care for the Bene Tleilaxu expansion). If you think Dune is awesome with six players (it is) then try it with eight!

The Lansraad can be found in The General issue 26.1 and the Ixians are found in The General issue 32.1. Issue 32.1 also includes the 10 valued leaders for the Lansraad and Ixians if you wish to use them with The Duel expansion.

A whole new set of violet buildings to make it even harder for you to decide what to build. The combinations that are available using these new buildings makes a great game greater. Once you add these new buildings you will never go back.

We play a lot of six player Citadels. The last player getting stuck with only two choices is just too harsh. Enter the Queen from the new Citadels. She is worth the price of this expansion alone. But, with eight additional characters to choose from this expansion it adds years to Citadels before it will become dusty on the shelf.

BattleMist is a good game, but the hero rules were always a little off. Sails of Wars changes the Quest and Hero rules, which fixes the problem adds more strategy to the game.

Add the Monstrous Allies expansion and the fixes for a couple of the races from Mike's Gaming Web and you are set for hours of fun.
