This is one of two geeklists I'm starting about Role Selection mechanics.

This is a list of games in which selecting a role does not dictate the type of action possibly performed by other players. Instead, selecting a role in these sort of games gives you some kind of special power or advantage that applies during the normal flow of play.

As always, feel free to add.

If I'm not mistaken-- I've only played this once, and it was the "Basic" version, without auctions-- roles are auctioned off each round. These also determine turn order, with the better abilities going last. One role lets you move goods first-- very important in a Pick-Up and Deliver game!--, another lets you lay an extra track, lay your track first, etc. IIRC, some actions-- City Growth and Urbanization-- are only available to the player who selects that role/action tile.

Similar to Steam, more powerful roles go last in the Turn Order, and less powerful ones go first. Roles allow you to do such things as build extra track (at a discount!), buy an extra share of stock, build an extra building, take an extra action, go first in the turn order, and just plain take some cash.

I think Kreta fits this list. Players have identical sets of seven character cards. On his/her turn, a player selects one character card, which only he/she is allowed to act upon. The selected character card becomes unavailable on subsequent turns, until a Kastellan card is played, which triggers a scoring and refreshes everyone's set of character cards.

Note: The cards in the lower corners of this image are called tower cards (numbered 1-26), which determine the regions of the board currently in play.

Each round in Master Thieves players simultaneously reveal one of six possible character cards: smuggler, jeweler, gemologist, thief, master thief, or detective. Only the revealer gets the special power of their character, although more than one player might have decided to play the same character card. A special interaction may occur between smugglers and detectives, depending on how many of each are selected.

I think this fits the theme of the list.

Players round robin selecting roles each turn. The role each player selects determines the play order, and gives that player only a bonus power.

The Roles in Pandemic can be chosen by players or assigned randomly. Each role allows that player to do something special above and beyond the actions and abilities available to all other players, usually bending or rewriting the rules for that player in that situation. The Medic treats disease more effectively, while the Scientist can cure a disease with fewer cards. The Ops Expert can build Research Centers without having to play a card (and in the expansion can move to any of them without having to play a card or be at another Research Center). The Dispatcher can move pieces around to get the right people to the right places. The expansion adds a lot more roles for more variety.
