Grimwold has has given us one of the most anticipated monthly lists on the Geek in his "New to You" Geeklist. I have read that Geeklist for a while now and recently I have started contributing to that list.

Contributing to that list has changed how I game a little bit. Now I seek out new games to play, instead of relying on the old standbys. I find that thinking about the Geeklist forces me to rate all new games I try and it even causes me to fill in my comments on each of those games, so I can use those comments on the Geeklist.

There is just one little thing that always bothered me a little bit, this one thing that I keep going over in my head almost every month. As I write up my contribution to the Geeklist, I find myself wanting to talk about a game that is NOT new to me. I yearn to let other geeks know about an old favorite we dusted off this month, or we are STILL playing that game that we thought would be stale by now, or a game you played this month in which you feel is underappreciated.

Here you can indulge us and tell us what game you had the most fun playing this month.

Thanks.
-Rob

If you have been paying attention, I probably sound like a broken record. Well, once again, my son pried himself away form Call of Duty or Starcraft II or whatever to play boardgames with me.

I let him pick the game and I was excited when he picked Earth Reborn, the game he bought me for my birthday back in March.

We only got through the first scenario but we played through it a couple times when my son wasn't happy with the original outcome.

I had always wanted to play this and finally got to play a 5 player game. I loved it, both the theme and the mechanics. It's probably my favorite new (to me) game I've played in the last few years. Strangely, I'm not normally a huge Martin Wallace fan. I like Brass, a Few Acres of Snow, but I don't normally fawn all over his games like this one.

Well, most months I will take a little time analyzing the list of games that I've played in that month to decide which was the best experience. This month I didn't even have to look at my list because I know exactly what was the best. In our recent play of Magical Athlete with some friends we had one of the most enjoyable game experiences I've had in a long time. I always try to describe certain moments in a game of Magical Athlete so that others will understand what it is that I love about it. The problem is, that's like trying to describe why a joke is funny. The moment you start, the humor is completely lost.

So instead of trying to describe what happened, let me simply describe some of the player reactions. At 2 different times in the game a player actually stood up while shaking the die in their hand and started chanting for a particular number. After one roll, a player threw their arms in the air in celebration. One player spent most of a round laughing villainously at all the other players. As a player was shaking their die, every other player at the table started chanting for them to get a certain result. Fingers were pointed after one player "let" someone else win a race. We all laughed at one incident until our faces hurt. Two players who had formed a temporary alliance started high-fiving one another after they successfully beat an opponent.

That's just a smattering of the fun we had with this game, and all that in a matter of about 45 minutes tops. Our friends approached the game with trepidation, as they weren't sure if this was a game they'd enjoy. By the end they said "that game wasn't half bad." And the next day they were calling me asking where they could buy a copy of the game for their son and his wife as a Christmas gift. Always the mark of a winner!

It had been at least 2 years, maybe 3 since I played Modern Art. We had a few grizzled boardgame veterans who had never had the chance to play it before, so we went for it.

It was a breath of fresh air. I had forgotten how exciting and dynamic this game is. I had forgotten everything I knew about strategy and was flying by the seat of my pants as if I'd never played it before (though, I only played it a few times all those years ago, so it's not like I'd ever gotten very good at it).

With lots of new flash coming out all the time, some of these oldies but goodies really take me to my gaming happy place.

I'm a sucker for abstracts, and Taluva has to be one of the best. When I found out one of the folks at my FLGS's board gamer meetup had brought it, I had to ask to play. Three of us played, which seemed like the perfect number of players. The game lasted too long due to perpetual interruptions, but I loved the simple beauty of the game and its gameplay.

I'd buy Taluva in a second. Of course, it's OOP and commanding a fortune online. Sigh.

I got to play in a linked Battlestar Galactica event at this years Buckeye Game Fest. The event was over three nights starting on Thursday. There were four or five different games of BSG going on at the same time, each with unique characters and slightly modified "battlestars".

The first night, we traveled to Kobol, and the success or failure there impacted the starting position for the second's night trip to New Caprica. On Saturday we finished up by traveling to the Ionian Nebula.

In the end, the Cylons prevailed with seven wins to six losses over the three nights.

Too much fun!

Played the four player game with roles. One of the best gaming experiences I ever had. It's a good two player card game, but the four player game is a masterpiece.

The four player game should receive more attention.

My best gaming moment this month actually just happened over the weekend. My partner and I sat down to play a game of SW and threw in some expansions. It was our first time trying out the Tales and Legends deck.

The game moved along pretty smoothly. We've played the game enough that we can get into the rhythm and it's a quick pace. The cards being flipped over added a little spice, but no dramatic shifts.

And then we approached the end. On the next to last turn I was feeling good about my scoring position. Scott was out on the board with his Diplomatic Tritons in one corner. My Alchemist Wizards were spread pretty thin so I opted to go into decline, planning to sweep in with a new race (my eye was on those Ransacking Ratmen) on my last turn.

This was not to be. I got hit with a 1-2 punch.

First, the card - Tabula Rasa! It meant all in decline tokens were removed from the board. Nasty - that was maybe 6 points I'd lose, but I figured I was still going to make up for it with my active race. Then I looked at what Scott had done on his last turn. Not realizing how smart it was, he had moved his Tritons to cover all the coastal spaces. AND he hadn't attacked me last turn. Which meant because of his diplomacy - I couldn't attack him. Which meant I couldn't enter the board! Which meant I was out of luck!

With mock tears I took the biggest cash pile I could amongst the available races and awaited my fate. I lost by about 6 points. Burned!

*** Author's Note: I'm aware that the T&L deck as written has you revealing the upcoming event card the turn before. But we wanted a little more spice, so we picked the variant where you keep that secret. Remind me never to agree to that again... ***

I have two great gaming experiences for the month. The first comes from the fact that I recently joined a work boargaming group. The guys in the group are all uber geeky software engineers and I know one of them (I am an accountant at the company) and got brought into the group. What makes the group AMAZING is that they have set up a website where you can show the games you have here at work and are willing to allow people to play with. You can also start a game session and the website will send everyone who is interested in that game an email and they can mark if they want to play or not. My first game was Acquire, and it was a 6 player game. This was my 4th time playing the game and first time with that many people. I tried to give a few pointers during the game but proceeded to end the game with almost double anyone else's score. This jokingly (I hope) almost got me kicked from the group. I played so freaking well though (with just enough luck that the game throws in). It was a fun game. Our next game together was Small World and I took a respectable second place which meant I am no longer on the outs with the group.

The second gaming experience I LOVED was that my 4 year old decided to create a game. He cut up his own paper and drew matching pictures on it. He then sat me down to play the game. He had invented Memory, but he didn;t know that. He sat me down and explained it to me. He then had certificates if you won or lost. It was super adoreable to my wife and I, and made a gaming daddy very proud.

My best gaming experience last month was in fact on an evening where I lost all 3 games played, but was one of the few times where all games played where finished within the suggested playing time and that including rules explanation. Granted, it did help there where only 3 of us but completing a game of Automobile and Endeavor on the same night made that game night feel really complete, with a little bit of Forbidden Island as an encore.

While Endeavor wasn't really close the other two games was, and I would have won Automobile had anything but a 5 been drawn for the luxury cars and Forbidden Island we lost as we drew the Liftoff twice on the same turn (due to shuffling the deck) the round before we were gonna win.

I talked my partner into playing an old Milton Bradley abstract wargame that I enjoyed a lot when I was young. I remembered Tank Battle, from the mid-1970's, as being a fun game, if not a great tank battle simulation, the object being to destroy all of your opponent's tanks to win, meanwhile avoiding mines and destroying installations to cripple your opponents movement and firepower. In addition to adjacent battles (some resolved by a Stratego-like comparing of tank values, and some by a spinner) and mines, there are Battleship-like boards for planning shots.

After much destruction on both sides, my last tank destroyed her last tank, but it all ended in a draw because I still had to spin for an adjacent artillery gun, which destroyed my last tank!
It's a fun game!

I also had a lot of fun playing the solitaire, free, print and play game, Dice of the Living Dead. I was playing several spooky/horror themed games in honor of upcoming Halloween, but this one was the most fun, even though it is a solo game. The object is to get your party of survivors safely out of a zombie-infested town, and it isn't an easy thing to do!
