I play games for fun, and I realized recently when they play well I always have a sense of accomplishment even when I come dead last. When I play something where I end with only one more point then I start with or even less then I start with, or building games where you never get to build anything the entire game, I become bitter and a bit of a sore loser as I grumble to myself. They might be good games but they make me bitter, not because I lost but because the game took away any enjoyment from me from playing it. It doesn't have that sense of accomplishment when you don't seem to get anywhere the entire game. So what are lists of games that give people feel a sense of accomplishment after they play them, even when they lose badly.

Every time I play this I love it. After the points are counted, even if I come last I look at my little empire and feel good about what I have built.

I like to admire the tall tower that I built.

I also like games where you have built some sort of route, like TTR, Settlers, Tikal, etc.

A new game I've been playing, Civilization, has been rewarding in the sense that you can look down at your play area and see your cities, tech tree, coins collected, etc. It is fun to build up an empire, and that's why I like 7 Wonders too.

Whether I win or I lose, it's (or has been) my empire. Starting with just a few colony ships, I explored the surrounding systems, found inhabitable planets, colonized them, researched bigger and better ships, build outposts and bases, started struggling with neighbors and finally saw the galaxy culminate in a galactic emperor emerging.

Lots of stuff going on in this game.

Building your hero, slaying monsters, conquering castles and vanquishing enemies - starting with lowly and relatively weak orcs, and finally facing multiple dragons at the same time when you conquer the major cities all alone with naught but the help of a few troops of minions, travelling underground and through the air at blazing speeds; this game really has you build an individual saga for your hero every time you play.

There's a lot of power creep in this game, too, and your hero becomes a lot stronger after a few rounds. Exponential growth in power and flexibility, if played right. That definitely helps make you feel that you accomplished something.

I've heard a lot of people say that when a Taluva game is over, they like to admire the cool 3-dimensional island which got built by the players during play.

At the end of this game I'm always a little sad to see my civilization end in age 4. Such an epic experience...

When I build a deck I try to combine cards that will work together and put some neutrals in that bug the heck out of the other guy. So if I have a card that lets you take a card from the top of the deck and make a development and I have cards that gain a hammer for each development in that zone, or cards that allow you to turn over five cards and put a dragon into play for free, and I load the deck with every flea bitten dragon card and it works....................wow! If it doesn't work, I still say wow........... because I came up with a devious deck and took a shot at it.

9. Board Game: Railways of the World [Average Rating:7.69 Overall Rank:106] [Average Rating:7.69 Unranked]
I just love the way this looks on the table at the end of a game, and the over produced components (including the empty city markers) all help enhance the visual appeal.

Even if you've done poorly, there's a sense of real accomplishment at having built up a network of train track and rail lines across the board.

As the game goes along you complete little sections of the map that give you points. The satisfaction from that hides the fact that it's not really that hard and you haven't gained much of an advantage over the other players by doing it.

Completing a difficult mission definitely gives you a sense of accomplishment. Especially when you don't lose a pilot. The same could be said of other Leader games, but I think that Phantom is the best of the series. The only thing that could make this game more satisfying would be more RPG elements. Although the more recent Hornet gives more opportunity for advancement through the ranks, this alone does not significantly add to the experience.
