Well it's 3:42am I've not been to bed yet but when I do I'll probably sleep late and it is tomorrow already so here's the next questions.

What is your biggest let down of a game that you anticipated?

I think the question speaks for itself but don't feel like you have to stick to the letter of the law here. Just be free with your answer.

This was a big let down to me. I P500'ed this one and waited...waited...waited. I read the rules as soon as GMT made them available on their website and was excited to play the game. I really thought this was going to be THE pirate game that would rock. It didn't even polka. The game basically boiled down to card play which was brutal and game changing problem was there weren't enough cards to make this interesting. I really tried with this one and ended up playing 5 games of it before I traded. As I didn't like it I wanted to trade the dog off while it was still "hot" and I could get a good trade for it. The big wind mechanic that the game is even named after...was stupid and not tense at all.

I know I may get flogged, tarred, and feathered for this one. However, I waited a long time to play this game. Now that I have a handful of plays under my belt I can say that it just isnt my bag. The learning curve is so high that it makes it nearly impossible to play against seasoned players.

I have played a ton of complex games with a ton of choices...but in Agricola one of the first things you have to do is pick out a bunch of cards to play your game with. Well, inexperienced players cant possibly sit down and understand what is about to happen and thus pretty much ensure their loss due to this point. On top of this, it just seems to have too many little ins and outs that make playing the game so overwhelming.

I guess you could argue that this is the genius of it. If you play with someone else on the same experience level as you and you play it a lot you can finally tinker around and figure the whole thing out and then sits in front of you a beautifully balanced game....but I honestly dont play the same game often enough to be that guy. In inaccessible! Even Di Macher seemed less complex than this game to me...*head explodes*

Now that I finally get it...I just dont care to play it again. I give it a 6. Maybe I would play it again in the family version when I am not inundated with 50 million cards to choose from every turn.

There must have been a moment at the beginning, where we could have said no. Somehow we missed it. Well, we'll know better next time.

I had just fallen for Carcassonne and just discovered BGG & BGWS & this wonderful world of modern games. I wanted a game that would play well with my fiancee who was my only gaming partner at the time.
This video convinced me Lost Cities was that game. Turns out the intro of the video is more fun than the game itself.

I learned that no matter how much you might research a game, nothing compares to the feel of actually playing it. And the feel of this game was a traditional card game, which not only am I just so-so on, but also doesn't represent all the awesomeness of modern boardgames.

Second would be
Glen More
Which I was very excited about playing after reading about it on the Geek.
Turns out it was very solitarish and fiddly with lots of downtime, a learning curve bad enough that can almost break the game for new players, and game design aspects I just don't find fun (like being penalized for building a lot).
This might be my highest my rating vs. avg rating discrepancy on the Geek, as it remains extremely popular.

I really wanted to like this game- the bits and artwork are obviously wonderful, and there are a few really interesting ideas here.

It flopped so hard on its face that I traded it away after two plays.

I can't remember 'most disappointing', so I'll go with 'most recent big disappointment'.

In 2002 or so, when I started playing wargames again I 'discovered' GMT, and thought they were the cat's meow. I bought quite a few of their games, and P500'd a bunch more. Eventually I sold most of those, and have been hanging on to a few more (like Great Battles of History) that I don't play anymore. And I noticed that there were fewer and fewer games coming down the pipeline that I wanted anymore. MMP has become my number one company, with assists from Compass Games and Clash of Arms. Except for things like Command & Colors, I buy almost nothing from GMT anymore.

But they did have one game in the pipeline, Normandy '44. It was on a topic I like, by a designer I like (Mark Simonitch), using a system I like (the one he used in Ukraine '43 and Ardennes '44). As usual, it seemed forever until I got a copy and...

It was boring. Not broken, nor ugly (Mark is my favorite guy for game maps, and he does his own games no disservice), just boring. One problem was the time covered, D-Day to D-Day+30, which was a period of slow expansion of the beachheads, preparing for the breakouts to come. It also quickly becomes clear to the Allied player that the optimum strategy is to make as many attacks at 3-1 odds as possible, so each turn is an exercise in toting up odds and allocating naval and air support to bring each attack up to 3-1.

I played a game of it with my usual PBEM opponent and he was no happier playing the Germans, nor has their been any enthusiasm for it in the corners of CSW I hang out on. I contrasted it with my play of Overlord, which was a much more interesting game. The Allied problems in sustaining and maintaining the beachheads are abstracted out of Normandy '44, but are an integral part of Overlord. Do I ship new units, supplies, replacements? When will the Mulberries be ready? etc.

Anyway, before I go on and on about Overlord, I was disappointed in how boring I found Normandy '44.

After all these years of playing D&D, I feel let down with the 4th edition. All the stuff I purchased for the previous editions, the wallet has clamped down with this version. I have just two of the books and one was given as a gift. The system is ok and that is the problem, just ok.

I think I mentioned this somewhere recently.

I was solidly a Role Player with a few board games and an occasional game of Battle Tech.

My friends were getting into miniature gaming, but I really wasn't that interested.

One day some one gave me some miniatures for Space Marine

The figured I might relate to it because the scale was close to my historical miniature gaming days. They were right and I was hooked. Soon playing several other mini games, but really having this one as my main.

As always GW loves to update systems. I was naive at the time when they announce this update. My cohort in crime at the time was a GW outrider, so he got an advance copy so that he could paint it and prepare it for demos.

He brought it to me to help him with it. I was very disappointing. They had stripped out a lot of the 'flavor' and chaos and also made it from a 'unit based' skirmish system to purely a unit based system, the added a layer of moral that must have been included to speed the game up, It was horrible. It was also my first experience with GE 'updates', disappoint followed with Blood Bowl (Third Edition), Space Hulk (third edition) and 40k 3rd edition (interesting they have 2nd and 3rd in the same entry even though they are CONSIDERABLY different), heck even the 'tweaks' in Talisman (third edition) didn't work for me.

I would list Epic Space Marine as my third favorite Miniature game now, I wonder sometimes if the complete failure of Epic 40,000 made it slip from 1st.

Don't have time to comment in depth. Basically, due to the way the cards are worded, the game can potentially break if the investigators explore rooms in the wrong order. Apparently this wasn't caught during playtesting.

May be dependent upon which setup options the keeper chooses. Not sure, since I've only played the scenario one time so far.

It was a really disappointing play experience, and kind of embarrassing because I was pretty excited to teach it to new players.

I was really looking forward to this. I love the art and I read a lot about it so I preordered it. In play it seemed less, then more. Like it is one step away from being on a Target or Walmart shelf.
Don't get me wrong. I like the game and will play the game. It is just that there is not the gameplay I was expecting. It is possible it will get better with the expansions, but why does a game need expansions to make it better? Expansion are....well, for expanding the gameplay. You have played a game 100 times, then an expansion comes out and you play the game another 100 times That is what expansions should be for, not to make an ok game into a great game.
(note, I will probably be getting the Alien Frontiers expansions...)
