Here were are closing in on our little social experiment. The first of the final 5 questions. Are we feeling the bitter sweet page as this begins to draw to an end? Nah...today's question:

What game do you feel has the strongest theme but the game bites?

Alright so I just grabbed a game as this one is where I asked a question and I'm going to deviate from the question itself. My response is not going be about the game specifically list.

If you know me you know I love the sport of hockey. I also love board games. Seems like I would like a hockey board game right? Well at least I would think so. Trouble is there are no interesting ones out there. At least the one's I've played anyway. Strat-o-matic does hockey as well as the other sports but I don't want a simulation. Slap Shot is cute and fun once in awhile but it's not really all that. I've always wanted to try out the game that I posted as it might be alright but still only looks ok. I've also wanted to play Big League Hockey Manager and HysteriCoach Hockey.

Pond Hockey is actually a pretty cool little game. It basically plays like StreetSoccer but in my opinion has a few rule tweaks that improve play...and it's hockey themed. That's a Print n' Play BTW guys. Still it lacks just a bit of what I'm looking for. It's just a bit too short and light.

I've worked a bit on what I would like but I always have trouble completing a game when I start on one. I've got probably 5-8 games laid out to about 80-90% completion but I hit a wall and just put it down and never get back to them. A cool hockey game is one of them.

To really 'bite', I'd have to saw it has to be rated 4 and below.

So, looking through those games I see quite a few miniature games which by default are full of theme. But, I'm sure you all are sick of hearing me slag of one of my two suspect Miniature games (or the few others that are down there).

So, I look at this game. I've only played it once and it was 'drudgery' that I don't want to repeat. But, it was late night at a con and no one knew how to play it.

It being a zombie game should have been the first clue (I've only really enjoyed two zombie games that I can think of) and the death nail should have been that it was a Twilight Creations game. But, we were begged to play it.

It really didn't play well and took HOURS. But, I do remember glimpses of theme that seemed interesting. Running from zombies, boarding up homes to hide in, killing zombies and finding ways to run faster then the guy beside you.

Honorable mention goes to Star Wars: Return of the Jedi – Battle at Sarlacc's Pit, what's more fun then pushing pieces off the 'air ship' and into Sarlec's Pit? That does really 'bite'. But, as for the game? What do you really expect from a mass market game based on a movie from the 70's?

I had such high hopes for this game. I love the deductive nature and the theme of it. The board and the bits are BEAUTIFUL....the rules and stuff made it seem like a great idea...

Sadly...the game "bites" (ZING!!!!!!!).

A few things I didnt like.

1. The battle system is clunky and unbalanced and even unnecessary completely. That is the thing that sucks the most.

2. It is damn near impossible to play as dracula unless you are the person running the game. This means if you own the game you pretty much always play dracula, or end up with someone who doesnt own it playing as dracula and losing miserably.

3. The rules are written poorly and the game is way way too long.

A few things I did like

1. The board is awesome and the bits are great.

2. The theme is fantastic and pretty much every part of the game works into it and is great.

3. The dracula player has some interesting powers and the way that day/night plays into the theme is very cool along with the way that the cards track where you have been etc.

All in all I have played the game a bunch of times...every time I have had to play as dracula and every time I have liked it some...unfortunately the game was an hour or hour/half more than the whole group should have enjoyed and ultimately I wish in the end I had played letters White Chapel or Garibaldi: The Escape

Here it is.

Anyway, the real negotiations are very cool as far as theme integration goes. However, after a few plays, I couldn't bring myself to be a fan of the nature of the game itself.

Fantasy theme. Plays like Final Fantasy (note the lack of Roman numerals here... I'm talking about the original) but with PvP - that is, each player controls a party of up to four different heroes, each competing to be the group that defeats the ultimate evil in the world. Other cards include one-time-use effects/events and faction cards that provide you with a permanent benefit to some aspect of the game (balanced by the detriment of being more vulnerable to any players of a specific opposing faction).

However.

There's far too much player interaction (read: backstabbing the fuck out of each other) and it drags the game out way too much. I'm talking double the expected play time. At least.

However.

I owned/played this back before FFG released a second printing of the game. The second printing features revamped art (surprising, since I thought the original art was pretty solid) and a better translation (not surprising), not sure if they changed anything else. Even if not, there are two expansions out for the game now, which may possibly add some balancing element to the game. Not sure, keep forgetting to look into them. I'd definitely like to try this one again though.

There must have been a moment at the beginning, where we could have said no. Somehow we missed it. Well, we'll know better next time.

Probably the strongest theme of my "4" and below ratings.
I'm just not into the game play at all. I get that it's all about the table talk and the group dynamic etc and not about the fact that you're sitting in the brig with no actions. It's just not a game I enjoy. But I do see the strong theme in it. And would probably be more into it if I had watched the show.

I think this game wins the award of "most polarizing" game of our gaming group, based on the comments I've seen on this series of geeklists.

OK, everyone sit down. I have a railroad game that did not float my boat. For whatever reason, I was not able to get into Railway Rivals. I had picked it up around the same time Empire builder came out and I was less than impressed and only had like one play. I think I gave the game away before I left West Germany.

Ok, I think the rules are ok regarding life, and weopons, and stuff, but the game just drags on and on, and then when you draw the helo pad it seems like nobody is able to take on the zombies guarding it, because we have used up everything to get to the helicopter. Maybe the game should contain fireball spell cards.
