OK, this is a totally off-topic experimental geeklist.

This list is the place where guitar players, enthusiasts and aficionados can come to find and share inspiration. The basic idea is to share videos and other content that makes you want to pick up your instrument and play! It can be songs, videos, tabs, lessons, whatever, so long as it's tasty and has potential to spark your colleagues' interest.

Some guidelines:

1. Post cool stuff! Let's say your cruising through youtube or bashing the StumbleUpon button and you see some guitar work that makes you think, "Holy crap, wow! I gotta see that again." When that happens, open B/V/RPGG in another tab and post it straightaway.

2. Keep it fresh; keep it varied. Don't post the same artist twice in a row. Change up the style or focus from the item ahead of yours. I loves me some shredding, but the list will be more useful and interesting if we don't have "Here's the 10 greatest Buckethead vids of all time!"

3. Restrain yourself a bit. Try to only post one item at a time. Most of us guitar nerd types could probably plop down 25 items onto this list without cracking a sweat. Try not to. In other words, leave a little for the next guy. (I will violate this ideal at the outset just to prime the pump.)

4. Don't forget to explain yourself. Tell us why whatever you post is important or awesome. Point out subtleties that we might miss the first time through.

Have fun! Hopefully this works out and I'll be entertained and enlightened by link after link from the happy hivemind. Nearly 300 mb mb and mb owners cannot be wrong!

Here's Pedro Javier Gonzalez playing Dire Straights' most iconic tune. I love how relaxed and fluid his playing is. It seems so effortless. I also love how he changes things up with every turn through the chord progression, honoring the original while at the same time injecting his own flavor.

Also, the way he just CRUSHES the ending gives me the chills every time I watch this.

I knew I was going to put an Ewan Dobson video on this list; it just took me a while to pick which one. This one, I Feel Your Pain is my favorite among several that I really dig. It's just impossible to imagine being able to sustain this level of intensity, precision and attack for any length of time at all, let alone a whole song or god forbid an actual performance.

I think I'd trade my right testicle for Ewan Dobson's left pinky. Seriously. Check that thing out!

Sails of Charon is probably my favorite Scorpions song and perhaps rates as a sort of "hidden gem" or under-rated classic. I add this video for a couple reasons. First, the dude just nails it -- I don't think he muffs a note all the way through. Plus, I like the idea of people just sitting in their studios or whatever and woodshedding the crap out of something until it's just so.

It's inspiring to me to see stuff like this.

In terms of inspiring me to pick up my instrument, there's no way I could make this list and leave off Kelly Joe Phelps. He taught the community college "Intro to guitar" class where I was first bitten by the six-string bug. Later, I took private lessons from him at a little music store called "The Brass, Reed & Guitar Shop" in Vancouver, Wash.

I could bring in any bit of music to a lesson, from Leo Kottke to Iron Maiden, and he could figure out how to play it, write out a tab and get me started within a half an hour. In some ways, he taught me everything I know.

It makes me happy that the age of youtube makes it so easy to let other people know about musicians like this. Here's Big Shaky.

I play classical guitar (nylon string, not carbon fiber). The performer here is Goran Krivokapic, a really outstanding player. The piece he's playing is called Zapateado, and it's the third of three connected pieces by a Spanish composer named Joaquin Rodrigo (who was blind).

Rodrigo wrote gorgeous stuff, but he's an absolute bear to play, partly because he wasn't a guitar player, and his guitar music is simply not very friendly to a guitar player -- otherwordly stretches, lightning-quick position shifts to keep the legato going, huge octave changes, etc.

So this piece is really fiery, and if you watch carefully, at :40, Krivokapic plays the 12th-fret harmonics WITH HIS NOSE.

I am a champion for Thin Lizzy, a band I consider to be one of the most underrated of all time. Everyone knows "Jailbreak" and "The Boys are Back in Town", but there is so much more in their catalog (Dancing in the Moonlight, Emerald, Black Rose, Cold Sweat, Don't Play Around, Hollywood, Waiting for an Alibi, This is the One, Holy War, Cowboy Song, Leave This Town, Got to Give it Up, Baby Please Don't Go, and MORE!) that just makes me want to turn and burn on the frets. The tunes that band cranked out were fresh but familiar with the right amount of rock, blues, irish flavor and always seemed to bang into the groove so naturally.

This song, as you will see, has a slow and fast version. Both kick arse. Also check out the official Thin Lizzy version with Phil Lynott on vocals. R.I.P. Phil and Gary, you are missed.

OK, so right off the top here, let me just say that this isn't my favorite style of music, not by a good ways. I'm not sure who this fellow is (he appears to be just "a guy".) This is definitely not the most over-the-top piece of virtuosity you've ever seen.

But I do really dig the playing here. Everything's smooth and tight and fluid and melodic. The phrasing is just NICE with each bit actually seeming to have "something to say". I wouldn't mind being able to play like this, no sir, wouldn't mind one little bit.

Apparently, it's called Smooth Jazz Cruise.

P.S. I'm going to keep bumping this list once a day until it either catches fire or I run out of videos worth posting...

OK, classical again. This time it's Baroque music. Enno Voorhorst is a pretty good player, and I quite like this video. He's playing a harpsichord piece here by Francois Couperin, and Couperin once said something that has stayed with me for years now:

"I confess in all seriousness that I love that which moves me far more than that which astonishes me."

I love that line. I've been playing for not-quite-25 years, and very fast playing has officially become boring to me. A lot of times, there's a wonderful piece of music that's hiding under the flurry of notes, and it gets lost because the performer's goal is to play it two seconds faster than this other guy.

Since this is an arrangement, some of the position shifts are awkward, but for the most part, this piece is not trying to fool you, nor is it a show-stopper. It's just a lovely piece of music with maybe five tricky parts. Playing with feeling on an unamplified, unforgiving instrument is a significant challenge, and that's really what gets me nowadays.

Is that a dobro he's playing?

OK, I'll keep going.

I admit I die a little inside every time Rolling Stone does some "Top Guitarists of All Time" series and it's just rock guitarist after rock guitarist. This video is David Russell, perhaps the finest classical guitarist performing today. I can't stress enough not only how good his technique is, but how well he interprets music across many different styles and time periods. (About the only knock on him is that some feel his preferred guitar sounds a bit nasal).

So here he is playing a piece by Augustin Barrios, an early 20th Century composer-virtuoso who wrote a ton of wonderful guitar music. If you want to pay attention to a few things in this piece, note not only the sustained tempo of the piece (it's a brisk dance), but also a.) no squeak on the strings while shifting, b.) the range of tone color from about 1:00 onward, c.) the awkward stretches he needs to keep the bassline connected.

Just a marvelous player. Anyone who has ever played a really, really top-end classical concert guitar knows that they are incredibly sensitive, and rather than make an inferior player sound good, they amplify mistakes: fretbuzz is louder and can occur fairly close to the fret, so you have to be dead-on, squeaks are squeakier, missed harmonics sound tinnier, if you play a piece in a flat key the open strings resonate more so you have to exert a ton of control over the instrument, etc. For Russell to do what he does always astounds me. I work from home and listen to music all day, and many times when Russell comes up on random, I just stop what I'm doing, sit back, and get lost.

OK, time to resurrect this list and see what people have been listening to. The other night I was bashing the StumbleUpon button and happened onto this, 1922 by Charlie Parr. Loved it. Impossibly, I'd never heard of him until that moment.

I've been playing in this style for nearly 20 years and could probably learn to play this tune in 10 minutes or so. But he is able to bring something that I struggle to find even on my best days...

The band is Animals as Leaders. The guitarist is Tosin Abasi. He plays 8 and 7 string guitars with a prog, jazzy, melodic, metal style that is completely unique. I like to listen to these guys while I paint miniatures.

It's a little hard to hear what he's doing in the intro, so skip ahead a minute if you just want to hear the WOW stuff.

An old favorite, featuring two of my favorite death metal stringed-instrument players. The bass on this version of the song is absolutely huge, and gives the song an amazing groove, meanwhile, Luc Lemay's string scratching and harmonics techniques are still like nothing else out there.

Sadly, the high quality version seems to have disappeared from the internet.

I probably don't have to tell y'all that Am -> G = easy to learn and fun to play.
