After seeing some of Adam Day's articles on Canadian Army snipers (such as this one), I started wondering about the depiction of snipers in tactical level wargames, both board and computer. There is a classic distinction between sharpshooters and snipers, and as many know, even desultory small arms fire was often described in after-action reports as "sniper fire." Movies such as Enemy at the Gates and Saving Private Ryan and photos such as the below have glamourized the role.

Wargames have treated snipers in a variety of ways and their treatment in games continues to evolve just as their function in warfare has evolved, from the static fronts of the First World War to their place in the Three Block War of the 21st Century.

Perhaps the most unique treatment of snipers; as a random event triggered by high or low dice rolls during the opposing player's major turn phases. The sniper rules took control of individual snipers out of the hands of the players and made their attacks more unpredictable and arguably more realistic.

Introducing snipers to the Squad Leader pantheon, the sniper originally appeared in scenario 19 in the Programmed Instruction scheme as a Single Man Counter (SMC) under the player's control. The sniper set up hidden, had a special DRM, and resolved fire on the IFT though results were interpreted differently to reflect the fact only a single weapon was firing. The rules were later modified heavily in Advanced Squad Leader.

The eponymous game was not about snipers at all, but rather man-to-man combat - the 2nd Edition and modules by TSR expanded the scope of the game to additional theatres and periods, including science fiction. Sniper fire was treated as a "special type of opportunity fire" permitted only for a defending force setting up on map. Snipers had to be pre-designated, and once moved, snipers lost their status. Sniper target hexes had to be pre-designated.

Cityfight postulated that snipers might be provided by the OOB of a scenario, or by being created during the play of a scenario when other formed units were dissolved, as ad hoc snipers.

It's been awhile since I played my only game, but I think this was abstracted as an event card with a hex number on it. If a unit was in the hex, it is hit.

But since I'm not sure, I'll mention the game and let someone else clarify.

I don't have the rule book in front of me but in LnL they are a specialized SMC. In Day of Heroes (the Mogadishu 1993 module) the snipers are pretty bad ass (Rangers and Deltas), they can go through an enemy counter stack and choose their targets.

In this game every special forces team (all SMC counters) has 1 sniper included. Very simple game, the sniper special ability works out to be extended range and a to-hit bonus at that extended range. When activating the SFT as a group the snipers (and most of the other units) lose their special abilities.

Look at the first line, 9th, 10th and 11th counters:

Russian Snipers enter the game with the 284th Rifle Division, have a ZOC, subtract one (-1) from the Defensive Factor of German units ...

This rule comes from the Advanced Rules of the game.

As a solitaire game, the Sniper IS the only playable unit.
Though it is set in WWII, the narrative created* while playing is applicable to most 20th Century/modern battlefield (not urban) scenarios.

*This is the remarkable strength / unique characteristic of this game, as each of your decisions and their outcomes drive ever new dangers, opportunities, and the choices you must make to not only kill, but survive.

This is a card game where players control squads of soldiers. Each solider is individually named, with their own abilities. There are snipers for each sides. They are rather expensive units, and do a lot of damage at long range. There are also some special rules.

Not sure about its current incarnation, but way back in the day (2nd edition) Warhammer 40,000 featured an imperial cult of assassins called the Vindicare.

Each assassin cult had a different schtick, and the schtick of the Vindicare was to be a super well hidden, powerful longrifle, special ammunition kinda guy.

They were fun!

I was going to add the Vindicare assassin from 40k, but since I was beaten to it I'll just add WFB and say "Empire Outrider Marksman with a Hochman Long Rifle".

That model has the ability to pick any single minature in range as a legitimate target and effectively functions as a playable sniper.

Ot at least it did in the last edition. Not sure about the current edition.

So this will push the envelope a bit -- it's American Civil War, before the traditional sniper era; operational rather than tactical; "sharpshooter" rather than "sniper". I still think it works pretty well, though.

In BatC, the Confederates have a pair of "Sharpshooter" counters (and, depending on the scenario, possibly some decoy counters). Their role in the campaign was to take highly accurate English Whitworth rifles into the mountains along the south side of the Tennessee River and interdict Union wagon trains winding along the north bank by killing the mules (you can get an idea of how restrictive the terrain was with this Google Maps topographic view; the river west of Chattanooga is the area of interest). Battlefield accounts reported as many as one-quarter of the mules in the attacked supply train killed, and though the Union army diverted infantry and artillery in an attempt to clear the Confederates, the ability of a few men to hide in rough terrain effectively closed the river supply route for the duration of the campaign.

In game terms, the sharpshooters have a chance to destroy an adjacent wagon train and block that hex to further trains until the wreckage is cleared. As the game is generally divisional in scale, sharpshooters have no combat role and are highly vulnerable to any Union forces. As with history, their chief defense is to remain on the far side of a major river.

So, a sole sniper? No, but it is a small unit putting long-range rifle fire against specific targets (as contrasted with "sharpshooter" in the "Alvin York was a really good shot under pressure" style).

Left half, bottom row for sharpshooter and decoy markers.
