Big surprise huh? Truth is I'd love to be published game designer. I've got boxes sitting around with rules and components and ideas and sketches for games. None are (save for a 1 party game) what I would call finished.

The one that I really like however is a western themed game about the end of the cowboy era when big business started taking over. I had the idea for the mechanic first and then put the theme to it. My first thought for the theme was more of a Clive of India setting. That just jumped into my head and it took me awhile to make it work for the western theme I wanted it to. You know how when you get one thing in your head it's hard to get it out. I just had this image of the scene from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom where he's in the market with short-round. Anyway now it's adapted to my beloved western theme but the game is just...up against the wall. I'm stuck again and that's where I close the box put it back on the shelf and it stays like so many other ideas I've done.

I would go with a fantasy game where the player works their way up from an adventurer with a party of 4-6 going into dungeons and saving the damsel or whatever. At some later point, they are commanding a platoon or company and then as general commanding an army or the ruler of a nation or empire. (Small scale tactical, large scale tactical, small scale strategic, large scale strategic, global scale)

I thought a co-op game about a cattle drive might be fun. I see there are some cattle games listed in BGG but I don't think they are co-op. I haven't thought of it much though. There would be some type of randomizer for wandering cattle, and event cards for rustlers, stampedes, weather.....then I kind of run dry. I thought about reading some books on the subject. If nothing else I will have learned a little history.

I came up with the idea for this game about a year and a half too late. Almost down to the finest detail. Like, even including the ability to build towers in the middle of the field from which you could spawn minions.

I've talked about it a couple times with an amateur designer, and he encouraged me to tweak it a bit since my idea had a few key differences:

1. You had to assault the opposing player's castle (back row) instead of a summoner. Each faction would have have a different benefit/power unique to them.

2. Board would be a 6x6 grid made up of tiles. Depending on which faction you chose to play as, the back row adjacent to your castle would consist of specific tiles. All others would be shuffled and placed facedown and then flipped when moved adjacent to. Some tiles provided terrain benefits or side quests that could be performed instead of attacking.

3. Decks also included equipment that buff your units. When killed, units would drop any equipment they were carrying and it could be picked up by another character (ally or foe) simply by walking over it. If they didn't have any free hands/armor slots, they had to choose between keeping what they had or dropping it in the space in favor of what they passed over.

There must have been a moment at the beginning, where we could have said no. Somehow we missed it. Well, we'll know better next time.

I'm fascinated by famous sieges in history. One in particular, the Siege of Rhodes (the 300 BC one, apparently there were several) would seem a great opportunity for a boardgame, but it looks like no one has tackled it yet. It's a great David v. Goliath story, where Rhodes ended up surviving a year-long siege, and then melted down the siege engines of the defeated invader to build the Colossus of Rhodes (which is of course the inspiration for the Statue of Liberty).

I even made a thread and a geeklist about this topic to ferret out any games, but usually it's only an element of a bigger game, nothing that focuses on the event itself:

Siege of Rhodes & Colossus of Rhodes - fertile thematic territory or already done?

Games related to Siege of Rhodes and/or Colossus of Rhodes

There is a Richard Berg GMT game that has been "in development" for years now, not sure if it'll ever see the light of day.
But even so, it'll be a pure wargame.

The game I envision if I could design it... I'm more steeped in the eurogame tradition with just a bit of wargaming thrown in. So I was thinking a "weuro" like Shogun/Wallenstein (first edition)/Antike.

But that's as far as I've gotten.

Another siege that would be interesting to work into a boardgame is the Siege of Masada where 900 Jews were under siege by ~10,000 Romans, and ended up committing mass suicide rather than become enslaved. Surprisingly there are virtually no games based on this.

Finally, this isn't a game, but it's game related. If I ever had the time or resources, I would love to put together a coffee table book on the early history of gaming, covering knucklebones, senet, etc...

I really have little interest in being 'a designer'.

So, I don't have a lot to say.

Although, between the 'Post-Apoplectic' comments earlier and some thread about Steam Punk themes, I realize there still needs to be more 'Post-Apoplectic/Steam Punk/Cyber Punk games.

And although to PA and CP themes were right down my alley in Role Playing days, I think Steam Punk has a better board gaming feel and would be interested in seeing more of those games.

So, if I was roped into a 'design' group, I'd probably be most interested in that theme.

I borrowed a book from the library a while back, The Other War of 1812: The Patriot War and the American Invasion of Spanish East Florida. I didn't finish it, and it now lives on my Amazon wish list waiting for someone to give it to me at Christmas. The American invasion of Spanish East Florida was driven by locals in south Georgia who were hungry for its sparsely populated turf and thought that the laizzez-faire Spanish colonial administration would be easy to tip over. They got the US government involved when the War of 1812 started and...

Well, I have to finish the book. But when I was reading it I kept thinking about how a small DTP game using cards and point to point movement might work. So, step one, read and finish the book..

Actually, with the advent of Victory Point Games, getting something like this published by a 'real' company is much more in the realm of the possible. But if I'm designing a game, I'm not doing or playing much else while I'm doing it, so there's that.

I wish I had the brains to make a brilliant economic game. Fortunately container, acquire, etc has that covered for me already.
