The last couple games I got into an obsession over happened to both be published in 1979. So I started wondering if that was a magic year for games or something. Indeed, a BGG search turned up several great games from that year.

For purposes of this list, I expanded the range from 1975 to 1979--the second half of a decade that I didn't think was all that fabulous, though some may remember it fondly.

I'll list the games that turned up in an advanced search for games rated 7 or higher. You can comment on them, reminisce about those years, or whatever you like.

1979. I hadn't read (or even heard of) the book when this game came out. But I bought the game and then started reading the books to get the back story. Really great game--and I expected no less from Avalon Hill, which is why I bought it. Unfortunately, I almost never got enough players together for this, so a year or so ago, I finally sold my copy. Hope it gets more use in its new home.

1977. I read about this game in the General for about three years before I broke down and bought a copy in January 1980. I groaned at first when I looked at the rulebook, because I was down on complicated games at that point. But I made myself play it anyway. And wow! It was undoubtedly the most exciting game I'd ever played. I ordered the expansions and spent that whole year playing almost nothing else. The next couple years too. I was nearly overwhelmed by the time I got into Crescendo of Doom, but in 1985, ASL came out, and the learning process started all over.

However, I had my fill of that too by 1995 or so. Today, I'm happier with the Lock 'n Load games.

1979. Just because it was an Avalon Hill game (and not a sports game or family game), I bought this when it was new. I'd never been into fantasy-fiction, but this game sounded like it'd be great. It was complicated, though, and I must've been distracted at the time. I certainly had my hands full with Squad Leader. So I never gave MR the time it deserved.

I had such a respect for it, though, that I bought a second copy for a friend. My own copy disappeared somehow, and I later bought a replacement for it, with the second-edition rules. Tried to learn the game and teach it to my wife that time, but she didn't like it.

Just recently, I acquired my third copy, and it's spread out on my table as I type. I'm planning to use a big chunk of my vacation time this month and next delving into MR and finally at least beginning to get it.

1976. I put off buying this game for about five years, though it kept getting glowing reviews in the General. Once I got partway into my first game (playing solo), I was sold. It was very obviously a new classic wargame. Unlike most wargamers, I never cared for the subject of this game; I have little interest in the eastern front of World War II. But this game is absolutely one of the very best I've ever played. Every now and then I'm tempted to buy a replacement for the copy I sold years ago.

1977. This one I put off buying for about seven years. I was never into naval warfare, and from what I read, it sounded like this was a simplistic game--some kind of pseudo-wargame with area movement and lots of dice. But in 1984 or so, I was so fed up with the complication of G.I. Anvil of Victory that I desperately wanted something simple for a change.

It turned out VitP is not simplistic at all. It's actually a streamlined gem of a game--complex without being complicated. Despite its relatively simple rules, though, it was a very hard game for me to learn. Once I finally got it (just the basic mechanics; I never learned to play the game well), I was highly impressed. A very fine game indeed.

But alas, it didn't suit me as a solitaire game. There's a lot of feinting and bluffing involved, and it's kinda hard to fool yourself when you're playing solo. So, I eventually had to sell my copy.

1976. I somewhat reluctantly bought this, several years after the Avalon Hill edition was first released. Figured it must be good if AH went to the trouble of getting the rights and republishing it.

I didn't have a lot of interest in the subject, though. The "untried units" mechanic was novel--but I was a little jaded on novelties by this time. So I played a couple games and then let this one go.

1976. I bought this several years after it came out. Played it only once, I think. Interesting scenario, and at that time it was a novelty playing a game set in ancient times. Didn't work so well solo, IIRC, because part of the game is guessing where the barbarians might spring out of the woods and launch their big assault.

1979. I put off buying this because of the then-enormous $85 price tag. But by 1984, I could resist no longer. One of two monster wargames I ever owned, and the only one I ever played. But I only played the smaller scenarios a few times and set up the full campaign just once (then never played before putting it all away).

The Cherbourg map section never seemed to fit just right. I don't know how many times I sent what I thought was a misprinted map section back to Avalon Hill, only to get another one just like it. I gave up, but I never was satisfied.

1979. As much as I loved Wooden Ships & Iron Men, I was never really into naval warfare. It must've been the late 1980s before I ever saw a copy of Ironclads on a store shelf. I passed it by, though I was curious.

In recent years, though, I read so many good things about this game that I finally broke down and bought a copy. Then I bought The Ironclads Expansion Kit and Shot and Shell.

Played through a few scenarios a year or so ago, and I liked them pretty well. If I didn't keep getting distracted by other games, I might get back into this one again.

Kind of awkward to play solitaire, though, due to simultaneous plotted movement.
