I have been using one of those plastic garage storage style utility shelves for my games but I was running out of space. And seeing that a good friend of mine was coming in from out of town to visit and play games, I figured now was as good a time as any to get a new shelf for the games.

So off I went to my friendly neighborhood IKEA. I had never been to an IKEA before so I had no idea what I was in store for. WOW. What an incredible store. If you have not been to one, you owe it to yourself to check one out. Where else can you shop for furniture, eat some Swedish meatballs, and shop at the Swedish grocery, all while the kids are at the in-store child care?

I ended up purchasing the large sized (73"x73") Expedit shelf for $199. So here is a short little pictorial diary of the build last night.

So after carrying up 200 lbs in boxes to the spare bedroom, I started opening everything up and putting it together. I didn't think about taking pictures until I had gotten this far.

Turns out the corners of that MDF is sharp! I jabbed my knee into a corner and proceeded to bleed all over the carpet. Luckily with a little organic cleaner and some elbow grease, I was able to prevent any staining.

No pain, no gain!

She is really coming together quickly! The screw-less dowel construction makes for fast assembly, albeit not the most sturdy. It does come with wall brackets though to secure it. You could also use wood glue if you are a real stickler.

All done! Complete assembly took about an hour because I was taking my time. The shelf is finished on both sides which is great if you want to use it as a room divider. the pictures doesn't do it justice. It's quite large and looks great. I had to take the picture at an angle to get the whole thing in. Also, these pictures were taken on my cellphone because I don't have a fancy DSLR... It's tough only having a left hand!

Now time to transplant the games!

Here is the final product after transplanting most of the games. Steam, Julius Caesar, and Combat Commander were opened downstairs so they didn't make the picture. Designer games up on top, my collection of mainstream and trivia games underneath. Right side I am reserving for the wargames, hence the empty cube there.

My wife was complaining that it was too big for my game collection....Little does she know that I have plans to fill it up sooner than she thinks... ninja ninja ninja

All in all, I am extremely pleased. I didn't have the money to go buy an expensive hardwood shelving unit so this fit my purposes perfectly. I highly recommend it.
