Saturday the 12th saw several games of Eminent Domain, starting with two-player with Bill and Allan. Later Cory, Dan N., Jeff T. and Victor played at least two four-player games. Both groups enjoyed the game.

Allan, Bill, Mike and myself played a learning game of Belfort. Allan and Bill had played once before. It seems a good mix of worker placement and card selection. All the players seemed to have a reasonably good chance of winning. I managed to mess up my resource selection on the final turn, forgetting which guild and thus resource I had chosen. Allan managed to maintain a lead throughout the game, but the final spread was 5 points, with three of us clumped together at the same value. I'm looking forward to trying this again.

Meanwhile, John and Luther went on with their current game, now in the Winter of 1941-2. John's heavy drive towards Moscow was thwarted and Luther's counter-attacks appear to be working well. I suspect that John's summer offensive will suffer from a lack of prior effort in the Ukraine, as Kiev still hasn't fallen.

We were able to get our first play of 1914 for the month started after a bit of uncertainty. We played turns 22 and 23. This represented a continuation of pre-existing trends with no truly notable changes. The Russians continued pressing through Prussia towards the Vistula but haven't quite reached it. Konigsberg did finally fall in turn 23.

Meanwhile Austro-Hungarian forces continued to drive north into Central Poland, finally ending within a few kilometers to the south and west of Warsaw, while not quite in a position to cut the east-west railway east of the city. Meanwhile, fighting surged again in the south but without particular results.

With the arrival of more people, but looking for a relatively short game before some of us headed home, we started a six-player game of Acquire. Five out of six of us started a chain on the first play and the pace was quick after that. It quickly became apparent after the first merger that some of us weren't in a very good position for a long-haul game. For us, the emphasis became growing our own companies quickly and trying to shut down the game. It's hard to win that way and I certainly didn't. But I did have the first place position in the largest company and didn't come in last.

Luther and John returned to a game of Ww/oM they had started yesterday. This time Luther is the Germans and John the Soviets. Luther is following a more historical approach and appears to be doing reasonably well.

Another group of three started off with AH and added a fourth fairly shortly. It apparently was a short game, as the players managed to close and/or seal all of the gates relatively quickly without severe opposition from monsters.

Saturday the 26th began with another session of 1914, completing turns 24 and 25. The Russians continued their pressure in East Prussia and are clearing out most German troops east of the Vistula. They also started to reinforce the immediate vicinity of Warsaw while attempting to evacuate the Guard Corps and steadily falling back east of Warsaw. Fighting continued on the north flank of the Russian Third Army just east of Lemberg, though inconclusively.

The Central Powers turn featured more attempts at shoring up the line in Prussia. South of Warsaw, the Austro-Hungarian 1st Army fell upon Russian forces, thrashing the Guard Corps, forcing the surrender of 1st Guards Division and the Guard Rifle Brigade, and damaging and forcing back units of the Ninth Army east of the city. Further south, the AH 3d Army launched some local counterattacks without decisive results.

Turn 25 saw the first unsuccessful Russian attacks across the Vistula. Further south, troops fell back into the Warsaw fortress and retreated towards the Bug east of the city. Southern forces were mostly quiet. Austrian forces launched their first attack on the Warsaw fortress, demoralizing some of the garrison but were unable to secure a breach.

Play will resume in two weeks with an interphase before turn 26.
