If you could pick one game you own that you treasure the most, what would it be? It may not be worth a lot of money. You might choose it for its beauty, for its elegance in play, its rarity, its age. You hold it in your hands and say, "Now THIS is a game!" You might have just bought it. It may have little value to others. List your pearl, your treasure, and give us your reason.

I chose as my pearl, the game I would rescue from a house fire above all other games. The cards are worn and the rules coming apart. When my son was living at home, Up Front was his favorite game. Not only does it have terrific nostalgia for me, but the game itself is a thing of complicated and elegant beauty. It was far ahead of it's time. I wish I had purchased five copies when it was available. If there was a museum of board games, Up Front would deserve its place under glass.

This is my pearl. My wife and I play the Track 20 two-player variant very frequently, so it has sentimental value. It also has good play value since over half of our games are decided by less than three dollars. Furthermore it is a good multi-player game for the rare occasions when we get together with other gamers, though my wife thinks the down-time is too great with many players.

I just could not imagine being without this game. And no matter how nicely Uberplay's version comes out (if it ever does ) it won't match up with the origonal!
Knizia rules, Ra rules, Alea rules...
My single favorite and 10 rated.

This is the pearl of my collection. It's not my absolute favorite game to play. (Although, it's among my top 5.) But I so adore the elegance of the game's mechanics, the integration of its theme, and the sumptuousness of its components. And, IMHO, what few complaints some players might have about this game can be easily fixed with just one or two "lite" house rules.

This might fit into the category as "not valued by anyone else" but it brings back great memories when I use to visit my aunt and uncle who had this game. When I found the original at a flea market in great condition I didn't hesitate to buy it. I very rarely play it but when I do set it all up and start the ball rolling the Rube Goldberg-inspired mousetrap always makes me smile.

From my small collection, built up reading reviews and comments here on BGG (thank you, guys!), I choose this one, for many reasons.
+ I love medieval/renaissance age.
+ Despite its well known flaws, I think it "simulate" in the right way the struggle of the european powers, their growth and decline.
+ it's fun: I enjoy the backstabbing done and received playing it!
+ I've bought recently a mint, s-w copy for 50 euros, and I have a smile when I see how much it sells on Ebay these days...

1830 is one of the few old Avalon Hill games that I still own. I never get to play it anymore, and I may never actually get to play it again, but I have such fond memories of this one that I could never get rid of it. My copy wouldn't be worth much anyway, it's battered and worn from lots of play. It has an elegant game system that is a nice mix of theme and mechanics. Francis Tresham is a true genius- it wasn't until I discovered the Geek that I learned that the same designer was responsible for both this and Civilization- our group played lots of Avalon Hill games back in the day and those two are the ones that I really remember fondly. The mechanics of both this and Civ make them seem like eurogames that are way ahead of their time (a notion that is unfortunatly proved wrong by the time required to play). Still, someday I hope to find three or four other people with an interest in this and lots of time on their hands!

This one is my perl. My sister and I loved this game when we were kids. I have also learned MANY perls of wisdom from this game. It is one of the best truly Christian, albeit roll-and-move kids games, I have ever played.

And of course I really love it because I added it to the database and nobody else has ever heard of/played it (at least none that I know of yet.) And I must admit I enjoy it when I like the uknown things over the popular things. (as long as they are good.)

I have games that are regarded more highly. I have games that are worth considerably more. But the pearl of my collection has to be Web of Power. It is elegant, oftentimes maddening, deliciously quick and simply a beautiful, beautiful game. Thi Nguyen has written "holiest of holies" Geeklists; Web of Power would be at or near the top of mine. I evangelize Web of Power to everyone I know (that starts getting interested in these types of games). The first time or two, they don't quite get it. Then it clicks; you can see the gleam in their eye as they play. They've caught the Web of Power bug. And they, too, will never turn down a game once it's suggested.

Before I seriously got into Euro/designer games (this would probably be around 2001 or so), my FLGS had a copy of it on the shelves. I would pick that box up more than any other in the store, pouring over the back; its contents, the description of gameplay, the beautiful board and bits. But because I didn't know much at the time, I was hesitant to purchase it. "Who would pay $30 for a board game?" I wondered. Then I played it for the first time at a con a few years back and it was mad, instant love. Back in town, I rush to said FLGS to find that it had been sold. What was I to do?

Fortunately, a local online seller had a copy or two left in stock. The rest, as they say...is history.

Interesting to note: my wife cringes when I suggest this. She doesn't like it. But then again, she's only played it twice. I don't think she quite gets it yet.

Give her time.

This is a Camelot variation that came out in the 40s. I have it proudly displayed in my family room.

I don't think I submitted the photo, but that's definately my first copy of the game. I recognize some of the dents and blemishes. I replaced it with a nicer copy that showed up on Ebay.

This is the pearl of my collection. I have, in beautiful condition, Civilization, Advanced Civilization, and the Western Expansion Map. Years ago, I found a set of plastic part boxes that are transparent plastic, which happen to be the exact size to fit one set of counters, a box for each player, and fit in their own small cardboard box. Also, I had purchased mapboard from Avalon Hill back when they sold that stuff, and did a nice job of mounting my Western Expansion Map.

The two negatives - I bent the mapboard too far back, and split the paper of my Western Expansion Map It's no big deal, but it's noticable. And the game is so long that I haven't gotten anyone to play it in years.

I've looked at this great set, wondering if I should just sell it on ebay for the exorbitant price I'm likely to get . . . but I just can't get myself to do. It's such a great game . . . if I could just play it .one.more.time.

An ancillary reason is that the game has become worth a lot of money. This is not too important to me because I doubt I'll ever sell it.

Taj Mahal is my pearl. It's OOP and mildly hard to find, but I got a good deal on it and would never trade it away. I also worked on the new 2p variant as a playtester and got several of my ideas selected as improvements, so it has some personal sentimental value for that.

I think the episode that really PROVES how much I value this game is when I couldn't find one of the small square chits and I spent nearly an hour turning the living room upside down and moving the furniture trying to locate it. Turns out it had gotten stuck between two cards in the deck, which actually seems to happen quite a bit as it has reoccurred since then. I need to move those little pieces to a baggie to save my sanity.

Ahhh, the cardboard crack.

Back in 94, my girlfriend (I was in HS) introduced this to me...and it was gooooood. I eventually got rid of the g/f, but the love for the game only continued to increase. I played it hardcore in college...every day, for hours on end. I had thousands of cards, sorted by color, then set, then alphabetically. All inventoried in a database, too. I didn't have the "Power 9" (except for Library of Alexandria...was it in the "9"?), and didn't really want them. I wanted to have fun, not hemorrage ridiculous amounts of money to have THE MOST competitive deck out there.

Don't get me wrong, I made incredibly powerful decks. I also made incredibly stupid decks. I made decks designed to kill myself before anyone could kill me. I made decks based on Dr. Seuss books.

I had an addiction of paper.

I bought boxes of every new set, opened the packs, sorted them, put them in storage, never to play with the cards. Eventually, I realized I hadn't played in over a year. Then WotC started printing foil cards...and I couldn't stand it.

In 1999, I sold my collection.

And I grew to regret it.

A few years later, I bought a few collections. I now have 25,000 or so cards, and rarely, if ever buy any new ones. I don't need them. I rarely play with them. But I have them. 10 years from now, I can break out a couple handfuls of cards, and teach the game to my kids. Whenever I feel nostalgic, I can pull out a box, and reminisce.

The gameplay mechanics are interesting, the way each card can drastically alter the game is amazing, and the possibilities are endless. The artwork on the cards is usually superb, as well. It all adds up to a beautiful game. (just expect to find some "worthless" cards, some "broken" combos, and don't ever expect to play competitively)

No matter what else happens, I'm NOT getting rid of my Magic collection again. I have 275+ other games, including some really amazing board games (Ra, El Grande, AoS + all expansions, Taj Mahal, Tikal, Torres, PoF, etc. etc. etc.), but Magic is...magic, for me. It brought me into gaming, it provided countless hours of entertainment, it challenged me time and again, and brought many of my firends together. Although I don't play anymore, and don't collect, either, Magic is my "Pearl."

It's not a 10 by any means in my collection, but Supremacy (and all the add-ons I have) would be what I would consider my pearl. I like it as a masterful strategic wargame set in modern times. It tries to capture alot and I feel it does a good job at doing that... It woudl also be one of the hardest I could replace currently in my collection. After that woudl probably be Mare Mediterraneum.

If I went on newer games, it woudl undoubtedly be Joan of Arc. And if my pearl had to be rated 10 by me - iot would be toss-up between Axiom or Sunda to Sahul since either of those are not quite as easily replaced as my others...

I was a big fan of the 'Choose Your Own Adventure' books as a kid, and even though this game was contemporary with them in the early-mid 1980's, I never heard of it until I found BGG. The pearl of my collection is now my unpunched, unplayed copy of Tales of the Arabian Nights in perfect condition, which I won on eBay for way too much money. It also started a binge of acquiring other paragraph-based games, such as Ambush!, City of Chaos, and a still-untranslated German boardgame based on The Neverending Story by Michael Ende.
