*** Tourney II voting has closed - please add your comments to the Results list.

Chris Whitney recently ran a "blitz" tournament over the last couple of days to pick the Best Wargame. I thought it would be interesting to see what games people would nominate as the "best" for distinct time periods. I will allow more time for nominations - at least a week or two - and then will combine the results into a single list, and possibly have a run-off for the "all time" best. Enjoy!

Please add your nominee(s) for the best wargame from 1970-1974 to this list or, if the game is already here, cast your vote by posting a comment under the game. Try to limit yourself to three titles.

P.S. No need to debate "what is a wargame" - if you think it is, then nominate it!

The first commercial tactical land warfare game. Wildly successful and great fun. A classic Jim Dunnigan design.

Ok, did you prefer original recipe or extra crispy? Randall Reed worked out some of the PanzerBlitz bugs and added a few new twists.

Yes, I am a tactical gaming guy. Even though it came out in 1972, has anything replaced it?

A unique and innovative science fiction game by the late wargaming legend Redmond Simonsen. Admittedly, StarForce is not highly rated on the Geek, but it was extremely popular in its day.

Ooh a little higher, now a bit to the left, a little more, a little more, just a bit more. Oooh yes, that's the spot!

The Russian Campaign and I am talking about the pictured first edition Jedko longbox original which came out in 1974. The one that started it all, which now over 30 years later is still going.

Craig Taylor is one of my favorite designers and I haven't even mentioned him once - so I am going to muscle in this entry for your consideration as well...

Another one I had to toss in the mix upon reflection.

I "promise" not to nominate any more games for this time period... so long as someone else adds Imperium.

I like the fourth edition the best, but this started in 1974. This is probably my favorite war game, but that might be all nostalgia. I haven't been able to get a game together since the late 80s.

From this period, I've probably played the AH version of Napoleon (which is pretty much the same as the original Gamma 2 version) the most of any wargame. Interestingly, I don't think I've ever played with the option morale rules. They just seemed to dirty up an otherwise elegant game.

The game plays quickly, and between two evenly matched players, always seems to be tense.
