*** Tourney II voting has closed - please add your comments to the Results list.

Chris Whitney recently ran a "blitz" tournament over the last couple of days to pick the Best Wargame. I thought it would be interesting to see what games people would nominate as the "best" for distinct time periods. I will allow more time for nominations - at least a week or two - and then will combine the results into a single list, and possibly have a run-off for the "all time" best. Enjoy!

Please add your nominee(s) for the best wargame from 1975-1979 to this list or, if the game is already here, cast your vote by posting a comment under the game. Try to limit yourself to three titles.

P.S. No need to debate "what is a wargame" - if you think it is, then nominate it!

Despite the number of overly complex and convoluted (to no good purpose) games that SPI churned out, City-Fight is one that actually worked and was playable as a game. Again, my tactical gaming bias is evident. I consider this Joe Balkoski design an often overlooked gem.

All I have to say is: what a game! As much as I like City Fight, I think Squad Leader would have to be my all-time favorite from the late seventies. I say it is too bad AH couldn't keep it from coming off the tracks when the expansions came out... although ASL fans may beg to differ!

Realism may take a hit in GEV, but the game system is one of the best in the time-to-fun ratio.

Nothing ground-breaking in the design, but a heckuva lot of fun. Supported by General articles like "The Viipuri Defense," it even made for great solitaire gaming. Best? Maybe not. But Favorite -- a case could be made.

THE wargame tourney. Held twice a year - at WBC and in Wisconsin by the best GM ever. Toughest competition of any wargame tourney. I heard the thing was designed in 3 weeks?

Ok, some folk have tried to recast this as a euro before euros, but it's a wargame and one of the greats... is there any game in the world that has stood up to the test of time as well as this one? I don't think so...

Is this game perfect? Far from it. But for intense, nerve- wracking, sweaty-palmed multi-player diplomacy, there's probably only one game that could beat it (and it's, of course, named in this entry...)...played it an awful lot...

Can you tell when I did most of my gaming?

An SPI classic. This quad game was quick to learn and easy to play. Not all 4 scenerios were of equal value but the overall effect of the game gave newbies an opportunity to get hooked on the hobby.

This game is unusual in that it included two distinct games in the same box. Crete forced you to make decisions early that affected your entire game strategy and Malta was always a tought nut to crack.

Ogre is probably the game I have played the most from this period. One of the few games you could play to completion during lunch at school. The game is well thought out and appears to have been heavily playtested which is amazing for such an inexpensive game. It's also a classic wargame situation stripped to its barest essentials: a high quality small force (one Ogre, although the Ogre itself is of course huge), vs. a larger low quality force. Also, the human player gets the fun of experimenting with various different forces and trying to discover optimum strategies for each of the force compositions.

For whatever reason, I've never played GEV, possibly because I preferred the elemental simplicity of Ogre.
