I will stop and check out the thrift stores periodically for buried treasure. Unlike other hobbies, I am not sure what the ultimate find would be. Train collectors have their old Lionels, while baseball card collectors have their rare Honus Wagner card. Every hobby seems to have its gold, even in the day of Ebay.

What do you think?

This one is what some consider the "holy grail". I like the game a ton and would love to find it in a thrift store.

For me it would have to be an Eon edition of Cosmic Encounter, complete with all nine Expansion Sets in mint condition. Current value would be somewhere between $600 and $800, but it's the sentimental value (owned it, loved it, sold it, regretted it) that makes it my Thrift Store Holy Grail.

Mine would be complete copies of all the Ares magazines. I cannot express the fun I had with these games and the excitement in waiting for the next issue.

This one would be at the top of the list.

Ok, it's not extremely rare - but I had to put it here 'cause of the following story:

A friend of mine bought a near-mint Games Research burgundy box Diplomacy set on an auction (I forget exactly how much - around $40, IIRC). The b@$tard that sold it left the $0.99 Goodwill price tag on the bottom of the box! I guess he had to rub it in...

We would have rather paid the $0.99 at the thrift store, hence this inclusion.

I assume the seller never even scrounged through the contents - there was an 70's era porn magazine under the filler box insert as a "bonus". I wonder how the original owner felt when he knew Mom gave is Dip set to Goodwill with his porn hidden inside?

I used to have Dark Tower back in the 80's, and my folks sold it in a yard sale when I was away with the Army. I'd give my left arm to get it back -- but not $350, which is what a complete, working set goes for on eBay!

Guess that tells you how much my left arm is worth...

Backpacking across europe. Stopped and played chess against a street hustler on the streets of prague. He had a bag of trinkets and offered anyone who beat him an item from the bag.

I won and rummaged through the sack and found a battered copy of this game. Spent the rest of the trip playing it every chance I got.

Fast forward 5 years: Mum was clearing out the house and this went out in a huge garbage bag to the local Salvation Army...I still cry at night sometimes.

Maybe this wouldn't be the biggest possible prize monetarily that I could find, but for a friend of mine this would be a dream come true. On and I'd get laid for sure!
