The idea for this list came to me after spending 2.5 hours at the local hospital after an event that is sadly related to my boardgame addiction. So, have you ever hurt yourself while playing or because of a boardgame?

Happened last Monday.

We did a group order of games and one of my friend got the new TTRE.

I had just picked up my package from the post office form the German Game Company(great people by the way) and was looking forward to see the box and also pick my games from the package.

The tape around the package was very well applied and was giving me a hard time. So I picked up a knife to help...

The big chef knife.

I started pulling some tape off but then...

The knife slipped.

My middle finger of the left hand got slashed pretty badly, right on the top knuckle(below the nail). The cut was so deep that my tip felt as if it was not part of the finger anymore.

Fortunately, the knife stopped at the bone...

3 hours later I was back at home with 3 stiches and a finger that will probably never straighten out properly...

Oh well.

It could be worse

Still looking forward to playing this new baby though!

When I was cutting out the pieces for this game, I was using an Xacto knife and a ruler to cut through foamcore. Since this game has a bazillion pieces (thanks to all those triangular counters), I started getting impatient, and tried to cut the pieces free with one swipe. This meant I had to press hard on both the knife and the metal ruler.

Well, I was pressing so hard on the ruler once that the very, very tip of my finger slipped over the edge of the ruler. SNIKT! Luckily, it was so much on the tip of my finger that it only sliced away a small portion of my epidermis, and didn't even draw blood.

It did sting a bit, though.

I can't even count the number of injuries I've received from working on miniatures associated with this game. Offhand, I can recall these:

slipping while attempting to drill a hole in a mini for a pin with my dremel and putting a small drillbit through the tip of my finger down to the bone

numerous unfortunate x-acto knife incidents

numerous burns caused by the use of superglue with accelerator

You'd think I'd have given up on this game by now just based on the health risks

This is dedicated at Mr. Alex's comment below.

Imagine if you will, a drunken gamer returning home from a very disappointing night of gaming. He stumbles into his home, keys jangling, lugging his massive tackle box converted to game component holder behind him. He stumbles down the darkened hallway to his bed room. On his way, the doorknob of the bathroom GRABS at his bag, wrenching his shoulder out of place. The drunken lout grunts in pain and tears the bag away from the offending doorknob. After plopping the bag down with an air of discontent, he promptly disrobes and heads straight to bed.

An hour later, as nature calls most insistently, the drunken, light sensitive, sleeper rouses from his bed and stumbles down the familiar path to the porcelain god, the darkness covers him like a comforting blanket. Halfway down the path, a sharp pain shoots up from the depths of the sole of his feet. A mighty cry of "SH*T" fly's from his mouth. Bewildered the man reaches for the wall for the wily light switch, shifting stance, moving his feet. PAIN!! another step...PAIN!! PAIN!! The man cries out, hopelessly, in frustration and dismay. No matter where this man stepped, his foot found the floor's attack unrelenting.

Suddenly, a light bulb burst with incalescent light from the hallway ceiling, an angry sun banishing the darkness to the places beyond its reach. The man screams and quickly covers his eyes, shielding him from the glory of its piercing rays. The man swayed upon one foot, with one hand pressed against the light switch, the other flayed across his face.

Slowly he took the protecting hand away from his eyes and looked down to stare the offending floor in the eyes and face his arch enemy. Below him swarmed colorful little devils, blue and red, black and yellow, spread out beneath him, converging upon his feet to continue the offense!

"FLEE!!" thought the man.

Put the man stayed his fear, and shook his mightily pounding head. In an effort to use the tactical advantage of his height to assay the situation better, he squeezes his eyelids together and looked again.

Outside the home, some say several miles away, people still talk of a voice that echoed across the rooftops which startled bats out of caves and the blackest of cats into hiding.

If pressed, some would say the voice said

"MEEEEEEEEPLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEES!"

While I've never recieved an injury playing chess myself, I distinctly remember back in the late 1980s or early 1990s reading about the injury problems being experienced by the greats of Russian chess. Apparently the famed Russian Chess Machine was training players so hard they were plagued by stress fractures in their fingers, caused by repeatedly lifting heavy chess pieces.

Wasn't there also a Grand Master who tripped over the table and broke his leg?
