I just received my copy of GMT Games' "Alesia", which looks great. I also have the 1976 Avalon Hill "Caesar At Alesia" which I used to play regularly at AHIKS conventions in the UK. I look forward to comparing the two.

This set me thinking on classic sieges, and classic games on those sieges. Hence, this list is ordered by rank, so that the highest rated siege games are listed first.

I'm not interested in listing games where a one-hex city can be besieged. Nor am I interested here in abstract siege games. So, please don't just suggest ANY game with the word "Siege" in the title. With your feedback, I want to create a list of great (classic) siege warfare in the era of classic sieges plus throw a handful of the best modern sieges.

Ramparts, towers, redoubts, catapults, siege engines, battering rams, trebuchet...once more unto the breech, dear friends.

I'm open to suggestions for inclusions of "classic" modern sieges such as Vicksburg, Yorktown, Tobruk, Leningrad, Stalingrad etc. Let me know what you think.

I haven't played it in years, but I used to play it a lot at conventions. It might have been worthy of a re-issue, but for the GMT game on the same battle.

I only just got this one - The Spanish conquest of the Aztecs, featuring the siege of Tenochtitlan. It's an unsual siege with Tenochtitlansitting in the middle of a lake, connected to the land via 4 causeways.

The Spanish have their own infantry, cannon, gunboats plus Indian Allies. The Aztecs have their elite "knight" units, plus regular Indian units many of dubious quality.

The game features several fortifications, the Temple complex hex, plus Aztec Chinampa city hexes (good defensively for the Aztecs only), and dry land city hexes.

There is quite a bit of chrome in the game, yet it's only medium to low complextity and looks very playable.

Oh yes, did I mention the Aztec human sacrifice rules....?
