I needed ideas for an awesome dice game for my girlfriend but I'm drawing a blank. She loves Yahtzee so I'm figuring if it's a dice-fest she'll love it, however I'm hoping it will have more depth then just dropping dice since I get bored easily playing Yahtzee.

All suggestions are welcome as long dice are the main part of the game.

This would be my logical choice. This game is all about dices and bluff.
Actually you don't even need to have the game to try it. You just have to find 30 dices (6 groups of diferent colors) and cups. Try it and, if you really like it, look for the "Perudo" version of the game because it already have nice cups and dices in the matching colors.

[FWIW, I also heartily agree with the first two choices]

This is Reiner Knizia's take on Yahtzee. Pretty much the same game, except with player interaction. You have to win prizes by rolling combinations (straight, two pair, etc), and the first to begin his turn with three prizes wins. The catch -- you can steal prizes from other players.

Not recommended for more than three players, as the game can drag on far beyond its welcome. Otherwise, a selection your girlfriend should enjoy.

Another Knizia, actually has some similarities to its cousin, Easy Come Easy Go. This time you're rolling to capture worms on domino-like chips. It has the same stealing mechanism as Easy Come Easy Go, but I think the basic game is a little more interesting. It also has a tendency to bog down, but not as much as ECEG, since you can hide old worms (can't be stolen) under your new worms.

I think your girlfriend will enjoy both Knizia games, but if you only consider one, then this is it.

Knights. This game isn't nearly as good as those above it on this list, but it's definitely more interesting and fun than Yahtzee. It plays pretty quick so you can play several rounds in an hour when playing with two people. A blend of card management, dice rolling, and pushing your luck to take those castles.

Cinqo. I wouldn't recommend it if I didn't play it a lot. We rarely play this at home or at the game club, but its small size (and comes in a travel case), and short game play (10 minutes for 2 people to play to 100) makes this a game we play a lot when we stop for a coffee, after a meal, etc. The premise is you get five chances to roll your five dice, and the hi/lo die. You are trying for all high or all low numbers, and you can bank good dice, but each roll you must rack at least one die. But all those good dice are worthless if you don't also roll the hi/lo in the right direction, and hopefully with a good multiplier. You play in rounds until someone breaks 100, which doesn't take long with 2 people.

While it doesn't involve the rolling of dice, it uses dice as the playing pieces.

I think it's long Out of Print, but the rules and playing board are available to print out yourself here, all you need is a goood amount of dice(6 sisded) in 2 colors.

Button Men -- I haven't played this one yet, not sure why after all the price is right (Cheapass Games). Looks like a very clever way forcing interesting choices on how to use your dice rolls. You can play it online to try it before you buy it. Here's what one Geek said who rated it a 9: "Easy to learn dice game with surprisingly complex strategy."

Od is a cardgame that uses a pair of dice that adds a bit of "combat". Depending on the value of the card compared to the dice roll you might get to keep the card and use it again. Great for 2 to 4 players.

My wife and I love this one, much to my suprise.
It ends up being more like poker than Yahtzee, but is much simpler than poker. It takes the dice from Yahtzee, adds in the betting, bluffing, and psychology of hold'em poker, and comes out being a much better game (imho) than regular yahtzee. And it's cheap!

Here's an idea that could work for you! Depending on what it is you don't like about Yahtzee, it may be that you'll like Kniffel Duell. Kniffel is the German name for Yahtzee, and Kniffel Duell takes the same dice-rolling procedures and (except for a slight variation on the Chance category) the same categories but changes the game from a solitaire where you fill out the whole page and only then compare scores to a tug-of-war kind of competition. Your decisions thus have a lot to do with the success the other player is having, making for a more gamerly game for you -- while the Yahtzee fan gets to enjoy using her Yahtzee smarts in a new situation. Try it! You'll like it!

This is Knizia's take on Can't Stop. I think the original is a bit better, but there are some cool challenges with this game, and the colors are very nice.

I think the seller robbirob has some copies at a reasonable price.

very fast game - played 2 player in 30 minutes on the second try - you see the dice tower here - the dice are also not true dice, they are changed for this game to have a different balance of numbers - do your selves a favour and get a game both of you can enjoy - this game is unique for beeing a great family or non-gamer game and at the same time gamers can go at it at a deeper level - this should also be under $30 US by now

This one is great for larger groups of people. It's quick, light, and you really don't have to pay a lot of attention to it while waiting for your turn to roll. That means the party guests can chitchat without fear of missing some important strategic move made by the roller. Lots of fun!
