Another "what I just bought" list, hopefully a little more entertaining than most others of its kind. I've tried to provide hooks for interesting conversations. I wonder if I've used enough bait...

In my town we have two game stores. In my youth, I used to frequent one of them in high school for my D&D needs, but was eventually turned off of them for a number of reasons, and the process soured me on the idea of the FLGS. Since then I've pretty much only shopped at the "10% over MSRP but very very very wide selection" store in the closest major city (2 hours away) and online.

The only time I'd ever shopped at the other local store was during a very ill-advised bout with the Harry Potter CCG. On a whim I stopped by it again.

There selection on board games was not wide, by MERCY ME were the prices GREAT. I got Doom for slightly less than what my favorite online stores sell it for. I was very impressed.

Doom also impressed me when I brought it out on the weekend and we had our first "4:00 AM" gaming session in month. We've all got families and kids, but Doom kept us riveted to the dice. What a blast.

(This game was actually purchased last week. I'm cheating so my title sounds snappy. It certainly started the cavalcade of events to follow)

Our gaming group is a weekly affair that runs 4-5 hours. We typically get three games in, ususally of the middle-weight Euro variety. We keep bemoaning the lack of time to get heavier games on the table. Now, none of us are into wargames, but we all enjoyed Sid Meiers Civilization and lament that we can never find the 5 or 6 hours to play it. Even War of the Ring stays in the closet more than I'd like as we just haven't had the time to develop into it.

But based on the exceptional price our FLGS was charging, I had to indulge in this game. Reviews sounded excellent and the theme made me giggle like a small girl. I'm working on a way to split the game into two sittings easily. The rules certainly read like it will be worth the effort. I hope it doesn't hide in the closet like War of the Ring, even though I expect this one to play longer.

I justified it to myself as a hole in my collection being filled. I'm a "boardgames are just clutter unless you play them" chap, so I hope this works out.

My wife needed to visit a specialist up in Calgary, so it was time to visit the "10% over MSRP" FLGS there. It's a bimonthly tradition. LOTR also seemed to fill a void in our groups gaming collection. Cooperative? I'm eager to see how this works out.

While I may have 50+ games in my collection, this is only my second Kinzia. (Lost Cities being the first).

I'm stuck for anything interesting to say. I bought this games as it ... confuses me. I can't see how it could possibly work. I look forward to finding out.

My wife has been a good sport about this board game thing. It really all started when I realized my video game habit had gotten out of control. I was buying things I was never playing. So I quit cold turkey. For the first time in forever I'm up to 40 hours in a console RPG (SMT3). Wow.

I digress. After I stopped buying video games I started buying board games, and started having friends over to play them. It was a much more rewarding experience, but soon our "Couples Nights" of Settlers of Catan where the wives were welcome we were into Puerto Rico and Maharaja binges that turned our ladies off. The only game that has routinely brought them back since has been Ticket to Ride.

So, while in Calgary, I said to my wife, "Dear, I want to to browse the games until you find something that interests you" (subtext: "...because by Odin's beard am I sick of Ticket to Ride").

She comes back with an either-or: Tigris and Euphrates or Princes of Florence.

I'm still stunned.

I recommended Princes as:
a) its looks a little (whole lot?) lighter than T&E. She enjoys Puerto Rico enough that I imagine she won't HATE PoF, while T&E might be too much too soon.
b) its out of print
c) I was already buying a Kinzia game

If any one has ideas about how to baby-step someone into heavier games like T&E, I'd be glad to hear it, as its ALWAYS much easier to purchase board games when she is interested in them.
