Okay, so I like 'Doctor Who'. I also visit a site dedicated to boardgames.

No, no I'm not any kind of geek at all. Why do you ask?

Well, in case you didn't know, season 27 of Doctor Who is now well under way in the UK:

(and I *LIKE* it! The Dalek episode was a work of art!)

Perhaps the best known Doctor nemesis!

The new series provides substantial backstory on these guys, and the Time Lords in general. And their often repeated catch-phrase "EXTERMINATE!" *has* to be one of the staples of SciFi at this point!

From the Wikipedia article on them:

Quote:
The instant appeal of the Daleks took the BBC off guard, and transformed Doctor Who from a Saturday tea-time children's educational programme to a must-watch national phenomenon. Children were alternately frightened and fascinated by the completely alien look of the monsters, and the Doctor Who production office was inundated by letters and calls asking about the creatures. Newspaper articles focused more attention on the series and the Daleks, enhancing their popularity further.

Featuring the TARDIS on the box!

The most notable feature of the Doctor's TARDIS, of course, is that it can't change shape...well, not that 'sticks', anyway. Other TARDIS machines operated by other Time Lords can.

The other point, of course, is that it's much, MUCH bigger on the inside than the outside would indicate. In fact, entire episodes have taken place within the Doctor's TARDIS.

Interestingly, in homage, Asteroid 3325 (in reality) was named "TARDIS".

'A Game of Time and Space'?

The series used the TARDIS as a focal point, allowing it to cover a number of different time periods and areas. Or, another way to look at it - put a police box anywhere geographically, or on any stage, and, taddah! A new 'Doctor Who' set!

Tom Baker - one of the better known takes of the Doctor. Perhaps because he was the longest run! (And, as a result, the image chosen for "The Doctor"s appearances on many other shows - including The Simpsons)

1) William Hartnell, 29 serials over 4 seasons, 63-66
2) Patrick Troughton,21 Serials over 3 seasons, 66-69
3) Jon Pertwee, 24 Serials over 5 seasons, 70-74
4) Tom Baker, 42 Serials over 3 seasons, 74-81
5) Peter Davison. 20 Serials over 3 seasons, 82-84
6) Colin Baker, 11 Serials over 3 seasons, 84-86
7) Sylvester McCoy, 12 Serials over 3 seasons, 87-87
8) Paul McGann, Made for TV movie, 1996
9) Christopher Ecckeston 2005

The BBC announced on March 30, 2005, that Eccleston would depart at the end of the current series and that David Tennant was reportedly in talks for the role. On April 16, 2005, the BBC confirmed that Tennant was to be the Tenth Doctor.

Hey, Doctor Who even gets a CCG in the late 90s! Guess this is just another in a LONG LINE of merchandising tie-ins!

No surprise, given the popularity of the series! By the late 1970s, viewership was at 12 million per airing.

From wikipedia (again):
Quote:
No first-run episode of Doctor Who has ever drawn fewer than three million viewers on BBC One, although its late 1980s performance of three to five million regular viewers was seen as being poor at the time, and was a leading cause of the programme's 1989 suspension. The BBC One broadcast of Rose, the first episode of the 2005 revival, drew an average audience of 10.81 million, No. 3 for BBC One that week and No. 7 across all channels.

As to the popularity of it in culture:
Quote:
It has been said that watching Doctor Who from a position of safety "behind the sofa" (as the Doctor Who exhibition at the Museum of the Moving Image in London was titled) and peering cautiously out to see if the scary bit was over is one of the great shared experiences of British childhood. The term has become a common phrase both in association with the programme and occasionally elsewhere.

..and a set of miniature rules from Harlequin. "Daleks - Invasion Earth" was also the name of movie 'based on' the TV serials...with a few major differences.

The 'Daleks' in this movie had more color variety than the originals, and "The Doctor"...was human! Nonono, this will not do at all...

Hah - you missed one. Well, to be fail I added this well after the list was made, but it still counts.

We dont know anything about the game yet - other than what was posted on Outpost Gallifrey's news section. More than likely, it'll be complete crap - but I'll still probably get it anyway, if I can find it cheap.
