Talisman. Even though the game is random and has little depth, its a lot of fun when a bunch of friends are playing together. We all laugh and have a wonderful time. Its exciting to see who gets turned to a frog, and other bad luck incidents. The expansions make it really interesting. We also say only one reincarnation of a new character to limit the game's almost eternal game length.

Backgammon. I am just obsessed about the game. I avoided it for years because it didn't "look cool", and now I try to play as often as possible. First I thought it was just luck based, but after reading some interesting books there are tons of strategies and tactics to winning and just screwing over your opponent. Its also traditional enough that I can get just about any friend to play a game. I carry a travel backgammon board and chess board in my car, and tiny magentic chess and backgammon games in my backpack when I head to classes.

Primoridal Soup is my wife's favorite due the fact it she had played it on the stand-alone computer game for awhile while waiting for it to be released in English or for someone to trade it - we waited till English version and got it. She loves it, though it is different than the computer version.

Reef Encounter plays great with 2 as well as 4 which is hard to find. It has mechanics in it that are simple yet intriguing in the strategies that can be combined to make a simple game, deeper than most. Also unique mechanics only to it make it the only game of its genre, that you can get everything I look for in a game, all within one game. And it is fun. A bigger factor than any of the intricies is that I enjoy the game, the metagame and the postgame. A well-made game through and through. I don't find this depth in any other games thus far. Some come close, but don't hit the mark where Reef Encounter has.

Plenty of people are going to add Euros that they've rated a 10, so I'll add a couple of wargames .

This is a classic and a design-first in many ways. It plays a little like simplified minatures and has oodles of atmosphere. Although OOP, it can be had reasonably on Ebay and is huge fun whether played as the longer Campaign game or the shorter Tactical game.

If you like WW1, what-ifs, simple but deep combat or naval warfare, this is a must try.

I could wax endlessly about this one, but this will do...

It's endlessly replayable, deep, variable, chock full of strategy and tactics and great fun.

It's one of those games that deserves its legendary status. Alas, it is expensive on Ebay...but if you like wargames with depth, this has got to be tried.

Now if only I could add more than 2 - how about a kids game or two, or a Party Game? The Euros will take care of themselves on the list.

My all-time favourite game!. You'd think that after 30+ years I'd get tired of playing this title? Not on your life... every game seems as fresh as the first time. The game still gets played at our Club 6 or more times each year (as a matter of fact, it ended up on our 'Top 20 played' lists twice in the past three years!) I can't name any other 40 year old game that still gets ANY plays at all.

It's a crisp design, easy to learn, with just the right amount of luck. And... if a completely bad run of tiles puts you completely out of a game, the short play time means you can still get your revenge in about an hour. Besides all that... it's just a lot of fun to play!

A top 10 would be easy, even a Top 5, but I really had to scratch my head to select only my two favourite games... I think that it boiled down to Union Pacific and this.

El Grande is a good game on it's own, but it really shines with the K&I expansion. Players have more control than in the basic game and some of the randomness that people complain about is almost completely removed from the game. The game gets much more cutthroat, too.

I know that there are some who feel that K&I makes the basic game too complicated, but I feel that this is how the game should have been in the first place. It's the only expansion that I like, and I'll probably never play El Grande again without it.

König & Intrigant takes a good game and turns it into a GREAT game!

It must be at least a decade that I last played this game, but I absolutely loved this game. I already was addicted to fantasy literature, and this was one of the first commercial games that let you fight of hordes of monsters like in the books.
Maybe not the best, but this one absolutely belongs to MY top two.

I have enjoyed every play of this game. Its so much different than the rest of my games because its cooperative. Probably the strongest themed game I have played as well. It gets really intense and feels very desperate as you try to avoid disaster. Just a really great and fun game. A bonus that its usually easy to get nongamers to try it, even though it isn't really that simple of a game.

Man, this game rocks. I love the theme, the variability, and the amazing bits. Days of Wonder always puts 110% into their games, and it really shows with this one. Battle Cry was good, but Memoir '44 is better. It isn't so much the theme or the production value that makes Memoir better, but DoW's support. The fact that the guys at DoW are encouraging online support of their game through scenario editors, having users upload their original creations, and web publishing Richard Borg's new scenarios is what really puts Memoir '44 over the top.

Although I don't really play this anymore, this has to be in my top two for the sheer number of hours that I put into this game when I was a bit younger. Really an incredible game. Too bad they got so carried away with constantly adding expansions, and changing rules. I mostly stopped buying in 1999 and just played with what I had.

I feel the need to mention a couple other games here too. Heroquest, War of the Ring, and Princes of Florence all deserve honorable mention. And maybe Jambo....okay, I'm done.

Long before Peter Jackson, so long ago that the animated Lord of the rings running out of funding half-way through made any further attempt at a film seem an impossibility - and live action? pah, never happen in my lifetime! The next best thing was this game - impossible for me to play now with its 12 to 20 hour playtime - games had great atmosphere and loads of tension, hidden movement using dice as pieces some of which were rumours, just about all the dark creatures from across the Tolkien liturature and a simple artistic style that I think is still fabulous to look at.

While I love Reiner Knizia's Lord of the Rings game, War of the Ring brings across the best feel of so many facets of the books (and the movie, but mainly the books). The game also features extremely good balance between opponents of any game that I have played. Maybe it's just my group, but our games have always come down to the wire.

One of the best themed games I've ever come across. Dune (the book) was chock full of battles, treachery, spice mining, and different races fighting for control of a valuable (but desolate) planet. This games brings across the feel of the book brilliantly, and other than War of the Ring (which has the same feeling for me) there aren't many games out there that can claim to be faithful to books they are based on.

This game has leapt to the top of my list of favorites. I think it's because it was just what I was looking for: a cooperative game that is as much fun for my kids as for me, one that includes some real strategy and is simple enough that I'm not always referencing the rulebook. I really love the mechanic of the black cloud's turn by turn growth. It adds a great urgency to the proceedings. And the system requires teamwork from everyone. In my last game one of my ships raced to my partner's homeworld and dropped mines in front of the creature to keep him alive long enough to get to my homeworld (protected by my other ship) where he could complete the last goal to give us a win. This game is pure fun, and it's now only half the original price.

And for my second favorite, something a bit older. This is one I'll never sell. I can't always find someone to play it, but when I do, it's always fun. It was incredibly innovative for its time--there were no "card-driven wargames" back then. A wargame without hexes was unheard of. And there were few...well, I can't remember ANY wargames with this kind of turn by turn, moment by moment interaction between players. No sitting there doing nothing for 15 minutes or half hour while the other guy moved. This game delivers memorable game moments--watching that squad creep closer to your men while you pray for a Fire card to show up. Here's hoping that reprint will someday see the light of day.
