Fisher Price: My first geeklist

I'm in total wargame mode right now and looking to pick up something new. I want to like hex/chit wargames but I generally hate chits (hexes are cool though). I will play something medium on the complexity scale but prefer light rules with deep gameplay. Short playing time is also a must as the cats make leaving a game set up out of the question. Please comment on my front runners and add your own suggestions. Thanks for your help.

This one seems a bit long but the rules seem prety good. Price is a bit steep although columbia is having a 3 for $150 make your own bundle deal.

I own West Front but the exception rules for amphibious/air assaults have kept it off the table. It might see more play after learning more of the core mechanics from this one. The rule book seems a bit longish though.

Again I don't dig chits but for some reason this one seems appealing. I may hold out for the Lock n Load WWII version unless people really dig this one.

I don't have much experience with wargames personally, the fear of over-complexity is my main obstacle to the genre. That said, this particular game has really caught my interest.

It's a block game, though not from the Columbia line, and it seems to have a mid-level complexity which makes it easy to get into. And the theme is great and it looks fantastic!

So if you own Hammer of the Scots, maybe you can consider this title. Rules are short and the game seems to have a lot of potential.
I don't own any Columbia game yet, but I consider this one could become one of my titles.

Don't forget the card driven systems. I picked Paths of Glory because it's my favorite, but there are plenty of other good ones:

We the People
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/620

Hannibal
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/234

For the People
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/833

Successors
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/68

Wilderness War
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/1822

Napoleanic Wars
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/3409

Barbarossa to Berlin
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/3353

and several more...

Hannibal would fit perfectly in your requirements, save that it is OOP and pretty expensive. Paths of Glory is bigger, more complicated and longer but I find it the most satisfying of the bunch.

This is a neat WWII-flavored CCG... it plays in under 2 hours (probably faster with more experience) and it combines tactical and operational decisions in gameplay. Setup is a snap, all the cards have well-detailed instructions on them and the instructions for the whole game fits on a double-side paper stuffed into the starter kit box. It's not really a true CCG as the cards aren't sold in boosters but pre-configured nationality packs so it won't suck money like M:tG would.

I'd call this medium on the complexity scale, yet oh so personal. If you like tactical games, ASL is the king of them all.

The rules for the Starter Kit are only 11 pages, and while they're pretty dense, there's lots of examples throughout to illustrate the rules.

I always feel like our games have these little cimematic moments that are really cool, and I'm able to project myself into the game because the scale is so intimate. It's easy to begin caring about your "men", and really want them to succeed. It's disheartening when they break, and thrilling when they rally and do something really heroic, like charge across a street through heavy fire and engage the enemy in hand to hand combat.

Game play is deep, although certainly deeper in the Starter Kit's big brother (and more complex). Even if you never progress beyond the Starter Kit, this is a great game.

Once you know what you're doing, you can play a game of this in a couple of hours or less. Should you need to pick up a game in progress, it's trivial to write down the positions and status of all the pieces, making it easy to reconstruct the game later.

There's also an excellent online community of players to help you get started, or to play when you can't find a local player... Take a look at http://www.vasl.org for more information.

If you can, get the expansion as well, and play with the port rules at the very least. It prevents the first turn knockout of Lannister naval power.

A fun, Diplomacy like game with enough twists and turns to keep it interesting. And high quality components.

This one just started shipping from Worthington Games. It's sort of a American Revolutionary War version of Battle Cry with maybe a bit more meat to it. The rules are only 8 pages long. Note that there are lots of pictures of this game on the BGG page but all of them that show this game set up are incorrect. This is not a block game with hidden units. This was all changed at the last minute and now the game will come with wooden counters. Should be a decent game and can't wait for my copy to show up in the mail.

I'd take a serious look at this one. Innovative card-based game play at an operational level that does an amazing job of illustrating the operational issues Frederick the Great faced while simultaneously holding off three different opponents.

One of the best examples of "design for effect" out there. Gameplay is surprisingly simple and elegant.

As a plus, you can get both this and Bonaparte at Marengo from Simmons Games as a discounted package deal.
