I spend a lot of time working on patents and other intellectual property issues and it just so happens that my favorite Cheapass Game is U.S. Patent No. 1. So, here's a list of games about patents. It's a short list. Hopefully others will expand the list.

US Patent Number 1 is a great concept. I suppose the fact that patent number 1 is not a time machine coupled with the fact that no confirmed time travelers showed up to the MIT time traveler's convention pretty much shows that time travel is not marketable ;-).

Hmmmm....

Still, makes for a great game!

I haven't played this game; however, it pertains to patents. I like the idea that the game focuses on the market aspects of patents where the technology must result in revenue. Is it fun?

Go actually has a great deal to do with patent strategies. Patents have the most value to a company if they protect areas in the markets of interest. Creating patents is often a combination of flashes of brilliance coupled with staking out marketing territory strategically just like moves in Go. By watching how a competitor moves within the playing area, or market, solid defenses can be constructed to block the competitor or encroach on their territory. In this sense, Go is a great metaphor for patent strategies.

File 13, a simple, tongue in cheek game about the game design and invention process. Originally published in Dragon Magazine, and included in the "Best of Dragon Magazine" collection.

I've been on this site for 15 years now, and I'm far from sick of games, but I think I prefer a better balance of favorites to new games. I'm also tired of playing 4+ hr multiplayer games, but I'll still happily play really long games 2 player.

"The Inventors" was a childhood staple game in my family - and it is all about true historical patents for zany inventions. It has a nifty all purpose gadget the rolls the dice (ringing a bell) and dispenses metal patent clips of seceret value. Really not a bad kid's game for its day.

This game actually has 'patent pending, 2003' status. You can see it on the picture, right lower side corner. I just don't know how many games have patent or pending status but no 'pouncing' game without their consent!

Related topic of inventors.

Also: Monopoly is probably the most notorious patent case in the history of board games.

"Described as "The funny Patents Game"... the game that keeps you guessing."

I inherited this game with my classroom. It's really just a book with pictures of actual US Patent Documents. You have to guess what each is called, what it does, and how it works.

Patent Pending(TM) is my own game design. A friend of mine, jim pinto, did the core development.
