Is there a good 2-player game with simple rules in tons of athmosphere?

It seems a bit of a contradiction: a game with a simple rules-set that has tons of interaction between 2-players, some tension and athmosphere in oodles....
I tried many games and simple rules often meant no strategy or re-playability....any suggestions for a game my wife and I might try?

Some pointers:

- Has to have simple clear rules that can be read in less than half an hour.
- Good solid 2-player gameplay that doesn't make you wonder how much better it would be with more players.
- Nice components is a plus, though I don't like too many small counters and such...
- Great theme that oozes atmosphere

Here are some comments on simple games we tried:

Why aren't there more games like this.
Very simple straightforward rules and yet a very addictive game that allows for some strategy, if a bit too little to be a total winner. But, it keeps getting pulled out of the cupboard for just one more go. Seems to attract many non-gamers who play it.

I so much wanted to like this game. I oozed athmosphere from the box and artwork and the components (wich game offers 100 plastic miniature zombies?)
But: where's the game. I found it a louzy 2-player affair, even with the new set of rules. I think it fairs better with more people, but as a 2-player....tiresome.

At least this one was fun. Ok, it was more fun with 4 players, but it at least combined simple rules with an atmospheric sense of dread when you saw the whole island falling to pieces and you soul survivers being surrounded by deadly sharks. Light, yet addictive.

Seems to fit the bill perfectly. And it's a good game to boot. A new version is about to be released, but the old (current) version wins on portability. Can easily be packed for the holidays.

My fiance and I picked this up recently, and we both love it. It is specifically designed for 2 players only, so you won't be wondering how well it will play with 4. The rules are relatively simple. It may come up a little short on interaction, but that depends on how agressively you play.

Camelot Legends oozes with theme! It has a VERY simple rule set but requires several replays to become familiar with the cards... most rules (and rule modifications) are shown on the cards. I love the way this game captures Arthurian stories!! Some have complained about the arithmetic required to keep track of the cards' cumulative values - personally, I don't think it's an issue as you get more familiar with the game. The artwork is gorgeous! Gameplay is fast and fun... and challenging. Scales well with 2-4. I like it best with 3 as it offers (some limited) diplomacy. Prone to analysis paralysis, though, with the wrong players. Otherwise, a great game!

Can't believe this one hasn't been listed already. This is an awesome 2-player game that's loaded with theme and atmosphere. It's not overly confrontational, either, so it's not likely to get you cut off from sex because you crushed your wife into the dust (even though she really needed crushing).

The game is out of print, but I've heard that there's an updated version coming out this July.

This game is best, I think, with two. It may also be on the more extreme edge of simple rules, but actually it is really not all that difficult to learn. That being said, I think it just drips with theme. Play appropriate vampire music in the background, maybe at night with the lights dimmed slightly, and you are good to go. This normally "unobtainable" game is coming out again! Let's hope they don't screw it up.

I feel a bit hypocritical pointing this one out because I've owned it for months and still haven't tried it out with my wife.

Don't let the complicated-looking board scare you off--it's all artwork. Tyrus is actually a pretty simple game based on a rock-paper-scissors mechanic. It looks like a lot of fun, however. Both players get the same hand of tiles, so lots of bluffing is involved. You go through a series of "elections," trying to bluff your opponent into winning a few landslides so that you can win all the close races. It's quick to play and the game has absolutely beautiful components.

Good for two players: check.
Atmosphere: check.
Simple rules grokkable in a half an hour: if you've played before...

'course, it's more an addiction than a game, alas (I got out after Ice Age). but ah, to be back in 1994... I've got a box of Revised that I'm saving for my kid(s) (not that I'm married yet).

I can recommend Drakon. I play this with my wife and it works very well with two players.

You find yourself setting up a winning streak or try your best to ruin your opponent's. It's not really confrontational, though.

There is lots of atmosphere in the dungeon of tiles the players take turns to create. You also get to chose from six different characters, fantasy staples such as wizard, amazon, and dwarf.

Many geeks do not take into account that you like "Amazing Labyrinth". I recommend Tom Tube because of its similarity to seek the best way to get from point A to B. There is a lot of interaction. The core mechanics may be as abstract as Labyrinth but the space theme fits well and it is addictive. It is designed for 2 players. Rules are supplied in English, French and German. Therefore it should fit the bill.

This is sort of at the borderline of "easy to learn", but there's a HUGE replayability payoff. Just be ready to play a couple games before it clicks (and then reread the rules because you probably screwed something up), but then you'll be playing over and over and over...

It's not uncommon to hear some people say they don't like this, but I can't help believe they didn't get over the hump. Look how many 9's and 10's there are, from people who have rated lots of games:

Could as well be the original TtR.

This one must not rot somewhere in the comments.

We're also most of the time only 2 players and thus know to appreciate great 2 player games. This one has the advantage to be great with 2, with 3, with 4, and with 5.

And the rules are dead simple (even more so in the original version), the gameplay is tense with just enough possibilities to be a little - not too much - mean and it's got a great atmosphere, esp. because of the well produced components.
