Everything has a beginning, even hobbies such as playing wargames. Looking up on the huge pile of games that take up as muck space as the sofa in front of the TV, I started thinking about what it was that made me spend so much time and money on war games. This is how the story goes.

Be sure to ounumber your foe 2:1 and roll the dice. Seems simple enough and so it started... I was four or five years old the first time I played risk.

Barbarernas sista kamp ("Last fight of the Barbarians" freely translated) was a simple enough game where two players build castles and then try to destroy the other players castle using small catapults and ballistas. This was fun for almost a month and the destruction was new to me. First board game I played without dice.

Every time I play this game I think about the movie "Split Second" with Rutger Hauer. There's one line that says it all:
We need bigger guns

I got this game for my eleventh birtday, and what a surprise it was. I have played it less then fifteen times during the years and never used the same set of rules twice. Today, 14 years later, I recieved a PM here on BGG that someone is willing to send me the English rules since the Swedish ones that I have is badly translated. I wonder if all wargamers are this stubborn and if it is some sort of requirement to obtain the title :S

After a few years of mostly miniature wargaming, I finally played axis and allies and the small soldiers caught my attantion. The rules are easy, the kill rate is high and I'm good at winning. That said, I started to look for more board games with small plastic soldiers.

Small plastic soldiers was the word and I found lots of them. Shogun was a simple and straight forward game without the fixed alliances from A&A. Diplomacy seemed to be an important bit of wargaming and I started to see what other games I could find where fighting wars was the most important bit but where temporary alliances needed to be made from turn to turn.

Similar to shogun but not quite the same, Samurai and Katana required more diplomatic skills then any of the games I had played earlier. The rules seemed e bit fuzzy though so we soon forgot about this game.

Feeling that I mastered the skill of diplomacy, I was invited to play the game with some friends of mine. 23 hours later I was declared the winner, but I didn't feel as sure about my diplomatic skills as I did before the game. This scared med so I fell back on more easily played war games that focused more on the fighting and less on the talking.

This game is strange. Don't get me wrong, I like playing it, but it doesn't feel that I am playing it against the others as much as it feels like a co-op kind of game. Everyone is helping everyone else make the moves and choose targets, and backstabbing is impossible since you never play the same civilization twice. The friendly mood freaked my our after a while so I started to look for more violent games.

A game named Attack! must be offensive, and all about attacking your foes, but I was wrong. Attacking was the easy part but that diplomacy thing appeared again and all of a sudden I found myself making alliances, signing non aggression pacts and fightings wars that could not be won. It was great!

With a battle system similar to the one from Diplomacy, A Game of Thrones had to be great, and it was. I hadn't read the books the first time i played the game so I decided that the Starks where the bad guys and that the Lannisters where doomed weaklings. Reading the books really confused me but I decided to play it as correct as I could. If I was a Baratheon I fought alone, fighting for the throne that was mine by right. If I was a Stark or a Greyjoy, I tried to controll the North and the northern sea zones, not taking any interest in the regions south of the trident. It was quite fun actually even if I didn't win as much as I had before.

After having discovered the great WW1 miniature range from Renegade miniatures, I started to look for board game covering the Great war and this is what I found. I ordered the boxed set edition and started reading the rules, making player aids (I've made all the material for the game that can be found on the geek) etc. The game is great and really covers all the aspects of the war. Research, diplomacy, trench warfare, tanks, supply lines and so on. I spent an entire weekend trying to find a way for the germans to defend their asian colonies and when the time came to finally play the game, I played as Great Britain instead...

Tired of playing games that require 42+ hours to complete, this one was a real saviour. It is well balanced and can be played in less then an hour. I really like it and have signed up for the Swedish Championship

Feeling an urge to find more fast played games, Memoir´44 seemed to be perfect, but I couldn't have been more wrong. A single scenario can be played twice in less then an hour, but who can stop after having played a single scenario?

The first thing I learnt about 7 ages was that it is hard to defeat someone in combat. The Second thing I learnt was that if things go badly, you choose an new civlization and scrap the other one without loosing any points. I liked it so much that I used up five civilizations before we reached age 3

Space, the final frontier... Or something. Most of the advanced races seemed too have fought a few wars allready so everyone knew what was out there and we all wanted to do something about that. Great game, much diplomacy and awesome battles.
