Remove the 8's, 9's and 10's (you get 40 cards). from the regular deck. The game is called Briscola in Italy and Brisca in Spain. There are versions of the Spanish and Italian decks. In this game the 3's worth 10 points and the Aces (Briscas) 11 points. The others worth 1 point.

Cribbage! It's been around for almost 400 years for a good reason! It's a great mix of chance (building your hand,) and strategy (the card play.) Plus the handy (but not essential) board helps keep the score.

I've always enjoyed Euchre. The 2 handed version is fun too. In two handed euchre, you use the same deck as normal Euchre (9-A of all 4 suits.) You deal 4 cards face down to each player, 4 cards face up to each player on top of the face down cards, and each player has a hand of 4 cards. The game then plays the same as Euchre. Whenever a face up card is played, after the trick is won, you reveal the card underneath it. It's interesting because you know where half the cards in play are, 8 of your own cards and 4 of your opponent's cards.

It's not quite as comprehensive as Parlett's Penguin Encyclopedia, but "Hoyle's Rules of Games" is an authoritative and standard text on classic card games. All the more popular two-player card games are included, and the information on these is typically more detailed than found in Parlett.

Zetema is a long and savoury game for two players, also playable with four or six players in partnerships. It is an obscure Victorian card game revived as a result of Sid Sackson's "A Gamut of Games." It is played with a 65-card deck (52 cards plus an additional two through Ace in one suit), and each player's objective is to reach a certain number of points scored by discarding assemblies, completing tricks, setting up marriages, or revealing flushes and sequences.
