Creating a geeklist to promote the game and hopefully discuss variants. I have a 1 page color-coded PDF player aid I created which states game utility for various counters and notes rules exceptions. It can be downloaded at http://www.boardgamegeek.com/fileinfo.php?fileid=10869

If you like theme and don't mind dice, this game is a flawed gem.

BANK VARIANT

Robber and bank owner each roll 2D6. The robber steals the difference between the two, so the minimum would be 0 (same roll) and the maximum would be 10 (1-1 vs 6-6). Still not very fun or thematic IMHO, could be tweaked. Possibility of adding a second bank guard. Could replace it with the Boomtown robbery where the robber picks a number between 2-12, rolls 2D6, and gets the money from you if the roll is >=.

I think the building change variants listed below are more promising.

BANK REPLACEMENT: SALOON

Medium cost, something like $4-$5. Possibly adds a barkeep for defense if attacked. Has a ONE-TIME ability to force a re-roll of a singular die (ANY roll in the town, including combat in which you are not involved). Use of the ability is indicated by flipping the counter upside-down. Forcing an entire re-roll (either one player's or both players) might be considered.

TRAIN REPLACEMENT: BROTHEL

Low cost, something like $2-$3. Sheriffs may not be used to defend it. Does not count toward town size or victory points. Income generated by a hotel in the town is given to the owner of the brothel instead (possibly half of the income). I definitely want the no-VP/no-sheriff aspect thematically, not sure if hotels are worth "attacking" that much though.
