Great games you can play that don't need a lot of space, and games that take af minimum of room in a backpack. Essentialy i need som games to play with my girlfriend when we go backpacking in asia this summer... For the long train-rides and so on... I suppose it will be mostly cardgames.

Playing just the base set without and of the expansions, Carcassonne fits nicely. Easy to teach and quick game play is a plus. This one can be as confrontational or non-confrontational as you like. To get it to pack down smaller leave the scoreing track behind and just use a pen and paper. Everything else fits in the tile bag.

Yet another that will require some floor or table space to play but packs down small for portability. I'm also trying to give you some other options than card games.
Another nice feature of this one is that it picks it self up as you play so there is almost no clean up when the game is over.

This game is very easy to take along. Just a bit thicker than a pack of cards. But you need quite a bit of space for the layout. The needed space is always the same. Just take a look at the photo to get an idea of the space you need. The game itself is quite nice, read the review of Tom Vasel if you want to. I dont know youre place of residence because besides the Netherlands it may be hard to come by.

OK I've relented and have returned to card games....

This one plays well with two if you use the varient that has four piles and each player must take two piles per round. Same issue as those above though. This one will require floor or table space as you collect cards. Your opponent must be able to see what you have collected to make a good decision for their next card play.

My favorite of the Kosmos 2 player line. Same problem as most the other games above, this one will require some table/floor space to play. This one really beings to shine as each player becomes accustomed to what cards are in the deck and how they can be played together to create more effect.

Ah, yet another that is not a card game but packs down reasonably small. This one also doesn't require any more table space or floor space that the size of the board itself. A good two player this one is all about "confrontation" but if UNO is her thing then this shoudn't be a problem.

A fun little memory card game this works well with two. The playing space is rather small (three draw piles and teh play pile) until you have to "empty the oven" which requires sorted piles of each ingredient. A nice little card game that plays up to 5 and since it is only a deck of cards packs down small.

Keeping in theme with your South East Asian adventures, I recommend a few packs of Pirates in your backpacks. You can play a quick game (one ship each) or a long game (4-5 ships each)on just about any size surface. The game is so simple and fun to play you'll probably make gaming friends very easily.

Enjoy!

No one's listed any dice games yet so I will. If you're dealing with a small, moving space, dice may be easier to handle than piles of cards or pieces on a board.

I've gotten a lot of mileage out of cinq-0 as a travel game, although there's also cosmic wimpout or farkel or poker dice (which you can use for a number of games).

Plus, it's easy to add more players if other people want to play.

If you're looking for compact Euro games, Adlung's card games are about as space-saving as you can get. I think Die Fugger is a great game and it works for two. Other good games in the series include Pompeji, Von Kap Bis Kairo, Verrater, Meuterer, Bambuti, and Zauberschwert & Drachenei. Not all of the series are great; some are quite mediocre. Do a search on the publisher Adlung to see the whole line.

This new game by Alan Moon and Aaron Weissblum is supposed to be very girlfriend/spouse/partner friendly and a lot of fun. I haven't played it, but I'm am going to pick up a copy soon. It comes in a box the size of a deck of cards.

The box is pretty compact, it requires a moderate amount of playing surface and the asian flavor fits in with your trip. It's somewhat hard to find though. If you're going to Japan, it might be something to look out for.

For most games per cubic inch, you can't beat the Chief Herman collections. They each have 20+ games. They do require some extra equipment, but carry along a deck or two of cards, some dice and a pack of Koplow Game's counting chips and you should be able to play most of the games. I particularly reccomend Nickie's Castle and Herman's Castle for two players. Cheappass games in general take up little space. Fightball, Safari Jack and Devil Bunny Needs a Ham suggest themselves in particular.

You can play 130+ different games with a Piecepack, which is something like a deck of card for boardgames. It's reasonably compact and if you're carrying a PDA, you can take along all 130 some rulesets with you in electronic form.
