Well, technically Elk Grove, but most of you would probably scratch your heads, saying where is that.

David M., known is these parts as dlminsac, invited several of the regulars at the Sacramento Board Game Meet-up to a gaming night at his house. He tries to do these about once a month. Attending, in addition to David and myself, were my son Michael, Greg L. (gregsacto), Kevan, Sean, Amber, Jim V. and his daughter Caira, and Wayne.

I know many of you find these lists somewhat boring. I kind of like them as an opportunity to document what was played at these kind of get togethers. I will list the games that we played and who played them.

For those of you who attended, please feel free to add comments about the games.

Finally, I want to thank David M. for both opening his house to us, and for his donation of GeekGold that I needed for my Avatar.

When Michael and I arrived, Sean and Amber, and I believe Wayne also, were already there. Sean, David, and Michael got to talking a little about Magic, and David showed us his boxes of Magic cards. With Michael expressing interest in Magic, Sean suggested he might like to play Fairy Tale. So, Sean, Amber, Wayne, Michael, and I played this game. Sean explained what the various symbols on the cards meant. I felt my eyes glazing over as he explained this. Maybe I was just having a bad attitude. I could not get into this game. In fact, while we were playing it, I could not wait for it to end. Not necessarily a good start to a gaming night. I believe Sean won this game. I came in last with 22 points. I did not record the number of points everyone else had.

While 5 of us were playing Fairy Tale, Jim V. and his daughter Caira arrived. David M. and them decided to play this game. This only added to my wishing I wasn't playing Fairy Tale, as I would have much rather joined this one and made it a 4 player game. Ingenious is a game I really enjoy. Oh well.

Jim V. won this game. I do not have a record of the points.

While the first two games were going, Greg L. and Kevan arrived. Once both games completed, we rearranged into two groups, with Greg, Kevan, Sean, and I playing this game. This game I thoroughly enjoyed. Sean got the first three natives that came up, with 2 of them in the first two rounds. He rode these to a victory, with 14 points, I believe. Despite this, Greg was the first person to get all 5 specimens, and Sean was second. I managed to be third to get all three, finishing with 9 points with 3 lizards and I think 3 butterflies. Each player managed to get to the 4 villages on the special victory card. This one goes onto my ever expanding wish list.

Jim, Caira, Amber, Michael, David, and Wayne chose to play this game. Caira was the winner. Maybe David can comment more on this game.

We finished up Amazonas while the other group was still playing Citadels. We discussed playing a short game and settled on Ubongo. I was in the running for a little bit, but had a couple of time late when I was last, and got the stones I needed taken by someone else. One time, I was not able to solve my puzzle at all. Kevan won with 7 or 8 purple stones. I managed to get 6 green stones. Another game for my wish list.

The Citadels game ended just a little before the Ubongo game. The group playing Citadels set up Metro and started to explaing the game. After Ubongo finished, some suggested playing San Juan. Caira, Michael, and Jim, decided to play this, leaving space in the Metro game for Greg, Kevan, and I to joing David, Wayne, and Amber. I was somewhat torn, but decided to play this. I like train games and had been told that I should try this one. I managed to develop a couple of routes that had promise, with one getting my tantalizingly close to the central station. However, since I looked like the player with the most potential, other decide they need to thwart me, turning my promising route away. I had a good score, but Kevan had two promising routes late in the game, and passed me for the win. This is defintely a game I need to add to my collection.

The other game suggested to play at this point was San Juan. I really like Puerto Rico, and was a little bit torn, because I would like to learn this game. However, I decided I really wanted to play Metro. Michael, Jim, Caira, and Sean played this game, with Sean emerging with the victory.

Once Metro and San Juan were done, Jim and Caira decided it was time to call it a night. Greg pulled out this game, which he had just bought, but not yet played. Michael, Kevan, and Wayne joined him in playing this. Greg was the victor. Once this game finished, Greg and Kevan decided it was time for them to leave.

After debating what to play for a little bit, Sean, Amber, David, and I decided to play this. We decided we wanted a game thatwould last about an hour. This was a game I had seen before, but never played, and was very interested in playing it. For a while, it seemed fairly even. Then Amber and David starting clearly pulling ahead. I was hurt by the fact that the second town I built had the river diverted around it with dams, without any hope of getting the river flowing back into the town. Amber managed to get all 6 of her buildings on the board, winning the game. With the conclusion of this game, Sean and Amber decided to head home.

While we were completing Dos Rios, my son, Michael taught Wayne this game, and they played one hand. They did not score the hand upon completion. My son and Wayne agreed that Michael had won the hand, but I am not completely sure of that. Further, given that I had just taught the game to Michael the night before, I am not certain how well he grasped the scoring, either. At this point, Wayne decided he should be leaving. That left three of us to potentially play a game. However, both my son and I agreed that we were not up to another one, and also decided to take our leave.
