When playing a new game sometimes it just takes one move or decision, and 'BAM!' you know that you really like this game. I'll start the list off with a couple gaming epiphanies I've had.

During a game of Tamsk today I had an epiphany about this list of epiphanies. Anyway, I have all the GIPF titles and have played the snot out of Zertz, and Dvonn online. Tamsk I've only really played with my kids. While fun, I've never really got a feel for the depth of this game, it's always been in my "theoretically fun" category.

Today I was playing Tamsk against a fellow gamer using the 15 second timer. One of my opponents timers had 30-40 seconds of life left. He needed to move that timer to keep it alive, but wanted to move another. When he started considering moving the other timer, I flipped the 15 second timer. This meant that if had moved this other timer I'd have the time to wait for the first timer to die. I forced him to move the first timer. A nasty move. Cool stuff. An epiphany moment - manipulating time in Tamsk is really cool.

During my first game of PotR I set up a battle and chose to be the Attacking Condottiere, and had every intention of losing the battle. Losing a battle to gain gold, and hurt a city in which I didn't have any city tiles. Also, I timed this battle so that I got the Condottiere role on the cheap too! Very machiavellian, and in my book very cool. I knew I liked this game.

During that very same game a second epiphany! There was an auction that I had a vested interest in, but not the resources to compete. I started offering gold and influence to keep someone in the auction (i.e. I'll pay you a gold to raise the bid). This opened up a whole new level of deviousness. Now I knew I really liked this game.

So you've got the perfect plan, and the enemy is ripe for the taking - but what's this? You don't have the card you need! Oh, sweet agony!!

Still recalled by others in my gaming group from our first ever game of this classic.

I'm a director of one of the major companies. One of the early engines, probably the 2's, were about to become redundant. I start buying shares in one of the small, useless, railways - a move puzzling the others (all rookies). Some eventually decide to buy too on the back of my buying, on the basis that I must be up to something. Too late to stop me becoming the director of that one too though.

I was up to something. I had just spotted the asset-stripping tactic and prompted ran the newly launched company into the ground by buying, at an agreed price of everything they had, the about-to-be-redundant engine and transferred a big pile of company credits to my major railway company. They buy the first of the new shiny engines making half the board's train stoke redundant. Then, as soon as I had the opportunity, I dump the newly floated shares...

Good memories! And the best bit of classic games, discovering those fundamental not-immediately-obvious tactics....
