Last year, my father-in-law died, and my wife's mother has been in a nursing home for a couple of years, so the family home has sat empty for about a year. My wife Kathy and I finally got the time and courage to get all the way back to Virginia to empty the house (mostly), and ship some furniture, books, clothes, china, etc. back to our home in Colorado. Not the most pleasant of tasks, especially for Kathy.

However, there were some intersting finds. It seems that her parents either played games or bought them for Kathy, and we boxed them up and brought them home. This list shows what we found, mostly ho-hums or games I already have (Clue & Monopoly), but one great find (seventh on the list).

Realize that we're both in our 50's, so when Kath was a kid, the games available were few. Apparently, some of these were bought later, but most of these are, well, really old.

This list is dedicated to Kathy's parents in Virginia. Her dad was an amazing fellow, and I wish I had known him before he hit his 60's. Still, his sense of humor and clever common sense will stay with me always. Happy belated Father's day, Pete! (His name was Wayne Peters, but everyone called him Pete.)

Don't know much about this game. Looks like another derivative word game like Boggle, except the letters are chosen alternately by two players and placed on a grid. Kathy thinks this might be useful for her learning center.

We already have a fairly old version of this one, and this looks like an original. Unfortunately, like all the games on this list, it's been played a lot and is pretty beat up.

The box we have looks even older than the one in the picture, and it's the standard version of Monopoly. Couldn't find a printing date on anything.

The game we found was an older edition than the eighth (shown), but the game board roller thing seems to work, and all the parts seem to be there, so the game is playable. Of course, even I'm too young for much of the trivia! (just kidding!)

The board looks very much like this one, and we even seem to have found nearly all the marbles, kept in a knitted cloth bag all those years!

There was a teeny little box among the games, which was a much smaller version of the classic jumping peg solitaire game than is shown in any of the pictures that go with the game on the 'Geek. Nice little surprise!

This was the major surprise. One of the classic two-player abstracts ever made, this is long out of print, and I actually couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it. We now have the 3M bookshelf edition, and everything is in wonderful shape. I feel very lucky, and I think I'll think of Kath's parents whenever I pull this out or even just look at it on the shelf. Wow.
