Whenever I acquire a used game, I always enjoy poking around the box, lifting trays and platforms, to see what interesting things might have found their way into the box before it came into my possession.

What have you found...?

Underneath one of the component trays was one of those From-To Christmas present tags. Clearly, it was from the 1960's indicating the game had been a gift to a child. I don't know why, but I found that to be really endearing and quite nostalgic.

I've purchased many copies of this game on eBay because it's really inexpensive and has great plastic figures that I like to use in other games (I basically strip it for parts!).

Anyway, the figures are always unpainted, molded in green, red, grey, or white plastic. Except for one set I received where all of the figures were elaborately painted in super high detail. And this didn't look like a home made paint job - there was too much uniformity and detail in the base textures alone. The paint job looked like it was silk-screend - it was that detailed.

I'm assuming this was probably a special edition of the game, but I really don't know. Does anybody have any ideas?

Inside all the boxes of Domaine there's a piece of random cardboard used as an insert to keep all the pieces from moving around. Mine had a nice advertisement for vodka on it.

I once bought a box of assorted chess and draughts pieces from a jumble sale, and hidden away in the bottom of the box was half a packet of stale cigarettes. Evidently someones foolproof hiding place wasn't secure enough

I once purchased a used, Avalon Hill copy of Rail Baron and found a Christmas card from one Rail Baron fan to another dating back to the late 70's or early 80's. Folded neatly and placed inside of the Christmas card was a long, handwritten mathematical analysis of the costs/rewards of all the railroad routes in the game.

I have since sold the game (along with the analysis). I should've typed it up and posted it to the 'geek. Oops.

Bought one new. Had everthing it should, and then some: second rulebook, and a stick of chewing, still wrapped and unchewed.

Another copy I bought (also new) had a couple extra comment cards.

I think I might have the most unusual find here:

Upon opening the box I found no sign of the game, but I was treated to about 30 years of history in the life of a high-ranking Mormon! Newspaper clippings, certificates of achievements, family cards, letters and pictures, old school report cards... you name it, and it was in here! The most recent item was a 1987 newspaper article about a 50th anniversary for, I guess, his grand-parents (he graduated High School in the 50s). I just skimmed through the stuff to see what all was in there and to see if I could find a way to return it to the family. As the newest stuff is almost 20-years old, I'm thinking it's going to be difficult to track down who this stuff should go to. Any ideas? My best one so far is to go to a local church and see if they want to take over the hunt - should I do this?

A while back, I found a copy of Dragon Pass at a thrift store. I did an inventory of the game and quickly realized that I had a whole lot of extra stuff in the box.

It took a bit of digging, but eventually I discovered that the box contained an entire set (minus a single chit) of chits and cards to the game Magic Realm.

I'm not sure if Magic Realm was in the store before I got there, but if it was, I'm sure the buyer was quite disappointed when he got home.

Got this off ebay.

Lifted the styrofoam insert (pre Green days) and found a Penthouse...subscription card.

The game had missing bits so I emailed the seller and jokingly told her that the previous owner of the game probabaly used it as a repository for porn magazines.

She was not amused...

Picked up at one of the many infamous KB Clearance sales for something like $0.99. Maybe half that. Maybe they paid me.

Anyway, imagine my amazement and astonishment when I get it home, open it up, and find inside...

A playable and enjoyable game. Based on a floundering movie license, no less.

A friend of mine ordered this game for me from Amazon.com. When we busted it out, we saw that it had two baggies with game pieces and a die, instead of just one. Nothing terribly exciting, but six game pieces and a die may come in handy some day.

I bought a copy of Triplanetary at a used bookstore. Beyond the normal components I found:

* A full-size xerox copy of the map of the game (this is not a small map to make a copy of).
* Paper copies of all of the counters in the game.
* A long, thin strip of hex-grid paper.
* A bunch of extra fan-made material printed off of the internet.

...and most strange of all:

* A hand-written Christmas letter to a "Dr. Roy" from apparently a former patient.
* A prayer printed off of the internet.

I received this as a birthday gift from a gamer friend recently, and inside, unrelated to the game was an old-school RPG 20-sided die... tiny little bugger, with no-prepainted numbering. These things actually sell for a premium these days (when there's a complete set). For me, it just brings back old nostalgic gaming memories from the 1970's and early 1980's.... ah. Yes.
