A new age is beginning. The winds of magic blow strongly, and the Old World’s two moons shine brightly in the night sky. Storms appear out of nowhere, and the land is rife with conflict. From the north descend savage groups of chaos marauders, men dedicated to the four Ruinous Powers of Chaos. They are seen side by side with degenerate beastmen and profane daemons. Their raids are striking further and further south, yet they are only the scouting forces.

Within, the lands of the Empire are besieged by Orcs and members of hidden cults. The Orcs delight in battle, and are laying waste to all they can find. The enemy within is rising up and striking vicious blows that mankind is unprepared to face. War is coming on all sides.

For every age, there are heroes willing to stand up and fight, or common folk for whom destiny has its own unseen plans. This age sees the arrival of many new warriors. Dwarfs, humans, high elves, and the enigmatic wood elves must set aside their differences to face the forces bent on destroying the Old World. Fortune favors the brave, and these heroes will need all the fortune they can muster.

Warhammer Fantasy Role play (WHFRP) has its roots back in 1986 with the First edition printed by Games Workshop. This third edition is a complete mechanical deviation from the first two incarnations.

From the Wikipedia article:

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay was first published in 1986 by Games Workshop. The product was intended as an adjunct to the Warhammer Fantasy Battle tabletop game. A number of early publications – such as the popular Realm of Chaos titles – included material for both WFRP and WFB, and a conversion system was published with the WFRP rules. Following the publication of The Enemy Within and a small number of additional supplements (including a character pack, GM screen, and the aforementioned Realm of Chaos books), Games Workshop made the decision to refocus its business. It had found that the miniatures business was much more profitable than pure publishing; WFRP sold very few miniatures, and adding WFRP material to WFB and Warhammer 40,000 supplements had done little to boost the sales of those products.

Publication of WFRP material was turned over to Flame Publications, a spun off division of Games Workshop focused exclusively on roleplaying, in 1989. Flame published a new series of adventures – the Doomstones Campaign, adapted from a set of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons modules written by a freelancer – and published the first issue of what was intended to become a monthly or quarterly publication, Warhammer Companion. In 1992, following financial problems, Flame ceased operations.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay remained in limbo for several years. A reported deal with Steve Jackson Games to buy the WFRP license fell through. Fan websites continued to publish new material and adaptations of Warhammer Fantasy Battle materials, but no new official material appeared for several years.

Nexus Editrice, one of the main RPG publishers in Italy, asked for a license from Games Workshop. The game was out of print in English, but Nexus acquired the license and made a new edition – editing the text and including new artwork by renowned artists such as Paolo Parente. The game was released in Spring 1994 and won the Best of Show prize at the Lucca Games show, the main game fair in Italy [5]. It had several reprints, both hardback and paperback, and it was followed by the translation of the Enemy Within campaign, a Warhammer Compendium, a Warhammer collection of 28 issues in Italian newspaper kiosks with stories, an Encyclopaedia Albionica about the world of Warhammer and a Warhammer Adventures original board game. This success helped bring new licenses soon after, including German and Czech ones, which used Nexus's layout and artwork.

In 1995, British publishing house Hogshead Publishing received a license to publish new and reprinted WFRP material. Hogshead published a revised edition of the main WFRP rulebook, as well as reprints of the Enemy Within campaign. New supplements also appeared, including the Realms of Sorcery magic supplement and a number of new adventures. Hogshead was subject to a number of restrictions in its rights regarding the WFRP license; Games Workshop retained extensive editorial control over the line, wanting to ensure that new WFRP material did not contradict the tone and details of the Warhammer Fantasy Battle line. In 1996, Games Workshop released Warhammer Quest, a game related to Advanced Heroquest, which they had co-produced with Milton Bradley. In addition to its basic ruleset, Warhammer Quest had a 192-page advanced rule set that included role-playing material, which was further expanded in White Dwarf for the next two years.

In 2002, Hogshead owner James Wallis sold his business and returned the WFRP license to Games Workshop, leaving the future of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay in doubt. Several Hogshead projects were abandoned, including a Skaven supplement and a complete rewrite of the final episode of the Enemy Within campaign.

In 2004, Games Workshop announced that the WFRP line would once again be published. Black Industries, a newly-created division of GW's Black Library publishing arm, would oversee the publishing and distribution of a new second edition of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, designed by Green Ronin Publishing. The new edition uses the same basic system released in 1986, but revises and updates a number of features of the system – replacing the magic system, for instance. The new WFRP also brought the Old World setting of WFRP up to date with the developments in background story that had taken place in the Warhammer tabletop game since first edition by setting the events of the game after the Storm of Chaos. The new rulebook appeared in March 2005, and was soon accompanied by an aggressively-published slate of supplements and sourcebooks, including a new epic campaign (the Paths of the Damned series); monster, equipment and setting supplements; and a number of stand-alone adventures. Editions of the game have also appeared in German, French, Polish, Italian, Spanish, and a Japanese edition was slated for 2007.

Black Industries announced on January 28, 2008 that it would be exiting the roleplaying game market. The Thousand Thrones Campaign was their final WFRP publication.

On February 22, 2008, Fantasy Flight Games announced that it had acquired the exclusive rights to publish board games, card games and role-playing games based on Games Workshop properties, including Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. The Career Compendium and Shades of Empire were FFG's only publications for second edition before it announced it would release a new edition of the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay game.

The Core set is the basic set for any beginning Game Master. If you are a player, and never plan on running a game, this set may be a lost on you. It contains everything a new group would need to run a game for up to 3 players + Game master.

The books are well done, but at times confusingly laid out. No index or reference are in any of the books.

Though at $99.00 it is a hard box to pass up for any players.

Expands the core set of pieces for the GM.

While it is not "essential" by any stretch, the Toolkit does add quite a bit of fluff and value to the gaming system. The book helps out with plenty of adventure hooks to get started, nemesis organization tracking sheets, locations, special/magic items and and more creatures.

Also included is the GM screen, which has the standard quick reference material imprinted.

The WHFRP3's most comprehensive GM book to date. It is well laid out, errata incorporated and even has an index!

Editorial: In my opinion, as a GM this book is an invaluable resource.

The Vaults are probably the most "controversial" item released for WHFRP3. If you purchased the Core Set and Game Master's Toolkit, then all this provides is duplicates of everything you already have. There are a couple errata cards provided.

The main value in the GM's Vault is if you purchased the hardcover Game Master's Guide, and decided to play with the components.

The Adventurers Toolkit was designed to add an additional player to the core set. The core set could support up to 3 players, this kit adds enough cards and counters for one more player.

As a player, this would be a good purchase. Though as a GM, it is a good purchase if you plan on supplying all your players.

The hardcover Players guide encompasses the Players Guide book, Tomes of Mysteries and Tomes of Blessing from the Core box set.

Rules are clarified and organized, with an index. As well as examples and diagrams.

Nominally intended for "componentless" play, this book helps clarify rules and is an invaluable resource.

Editorial: In my opinion, the hard cover books are a "must" for players and GM's alike.

Another well done book for "componentless" play. However, that does not degrade the value for those that use the components. The Creature Guide contains all foes, creatures and other nasty's that had been printed to day.

There is also a very nice index, and charts that detail each maneuver and "card" available to the creatures.

The Creature Vault adds stand ups for all the creatures found in The Creature Guide. As well as associated cards, of the vaults, this one is the easiest to justify as it adds more foes for the GM to play with.

Similar to all the WRFRP sets Black Fire Pass adds two elements to the game.

First off: Dwarfs, nice detailed synopsis on their culture. As well as several new dwarven careers. This also adds inventions and runes to the game.

Secondly, BFP adds a new adventure set to the mix:the Harrower of Thanes, as well as rough geography lesson on the "fringes of the Empire", with some plot hook ideas and such.

Basic Careers (Dwarf only)
Apprentice Runesmith
Dwarf Engineer
Grudge Keeper
Ironbreaker

Advanced Careers (Dwarf only)
Dwarf Master Engineer
Dragon Slayer

A Day Late, A Shilling Short was the adventure for the new WHFRP 3rd system that debuted as part of the Emperor’s Decree Pre-release Event.

This scenario is available free from Fantasy Flight Games here.

From FFG's website:
The short demo booklet is designed to make it easy for a first-time GM with access to the Core Set to set up, prepare, and run a short adventure for some friends. Though not playable without a copy of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, this sixteen-page pdf file conveys a grim and perilous world of strife

Synopsis
Something is definitely wrong. Vaerun the High Elf Envoy is expecting an important package that was supposed to arrive on the last coach. Birgitta the Roadwarden’s partner Rutger was escorting the package. The coach, the package, and Rutger are all a day late...

Journey to Black Fire Pass was released to give new players a glimpse of the new WHFRP3 system, as well as give veteran players a peek at the upcoming Black Fire Pass supplement.

It is available free from Fantasy Flight Games here.

Synopsis
It has been too long since your friend and brother Belkrum Thundrik set out towards the distant hold of Karak Azul, there to present the king with a weapon to aid in the battle against the horrid greenskins. Gorfang Rotgut of the Orcs has committed intolerable humiliations against your fellow Dwarfs and now that Belkrum has gone missing, the depredations of the Orcs will continue unabated. If the honor of Karak Azul is to be restored and the Orcs put in the rightful place, you must take up Belkrum's mission. Find your kin, find the secret weapon, and smash the Orcs!

The Edge of Night is the second box campaign set, tuned for 3-4 characters in their first rank. Mechanically EoN introduces some basic rules for corruption and mutation, which are expanded greatly in The Winds of Magic

Synopsis
Morrslieb, the Chaos Moon, has cast its malevolent glare down upon Ubersreik, a city caught up in intrigue and turmoil. Under its sickly green light, men go mad and dark things gain strength. With the ill omen hanging overhead, the citizens of Ubersreik find their city’s fate balanced precariously on the edge of night. Venture to the troubled city of Ubersreik, where nothing is exactly what it seems. Under the pale green light of Morrslieb, terrible things are bound to happen, and adventure will inevitably unfold...

The Witch's Song is the third boxed campaign set. It is purely an adventure and adds very little to the overall game in terms of mechanics and concepts. It does, however, add a new "school" of magic: Hedge Magic. As well as a few new mutations.

Synopsis
At the far end of the Empire lies an inconsequential fishing village where a series of not-so-inconsequential events are about to take place. Surrounded by the Cursed Marshes, the village of Fauligmere is about to become the unlikely stage for an adventure of unbridled sorcery where nothing is as it seems...
