It seems the dynamic of alot of the games I've played change significantly depending on who is involved in the game. This is kind of a "duh" concept I guess, as of course each player has a unique style of play, especially if the rules allow for it.

I just wanted to create a list of games that have created an "oh, you can play like that" situation. Most of these occured when we were still trying to figure the game strategies out. Feel free to add to this list!

I had played this a few times with my girlfriend and some friends, and we had always played it as a friendly contest to who can draw the right tiles and win with non-aggressive placements.

We then played with a guy who setup tiles in attempts to steal farms and such from other players. Everyone else then went, "Oh, I never really considered that!"

I still prefer a non-aggressive game, but it's nice to know you can go after someone if they are running away with the game. Until then, most of us never really saw it as a "war".

We played this once with 4 people. I don't think we really got into the trading aspect of the game, which I am pretty certain is the core of it.

I want to try it again, we had a few trades but it seemed like we were missing something. Two of the players were extremely casual gamers, so that might be why.

Our first few goes at this game took a loooong time to play out. It started with the Sheriff always being passive and just waiting several turns for the Outlaws to finally expose themselves and attack.

After a few games, I finally got the Sheriff card and basically announced I would fire at anybody who just sat there without attacking someone. It really sped the game up, and forced everybody to reveal who they were sooner. Although I have shot a deputy once or twice because they refused to attack anybody in the first two turns.

This game usually gets pulled out, as several people that show up to our game night aren't quite full-fledged gamers yet.

There is one guy who will always play defensively over offensely, unless his move can win the game. If you place one piece down, and he can play next to it, he will. He'll block your row of 2 before he adds to his teams row of 3. It's a horrible strategy, but he enjoys employing it.

I think you are right about the "duh concept" because personality and psychology in playing certain games (bluffing games being a good example) is different with each person or that individual reacting to the group.

This is the first game that came to my mind. We play this pretty aggressively at home: if I mention a Knight and start to set him on a quest, I can be pretty sure that Brian will kill off the knight when he gets the lead. Other people are shocked by this behavior and consider it outside the realm of the game. It's what makes the game for us!

I played with one group whose members would "bank" resource cards with one another in between turns so that they never had to hold over 7 in hand. Seemed kind of cheesy to me.

Another group didn't know that you could arrange the tiles differently from the beginner's setup in the rules (admittedly, I thought the same when I was first playing).

My soon-to-be mother-in-law is famous for passing up opportunities to make cutthroat plays, and for not caring if she loses. Would that I could at least emulate the latter.

I recently acquired Modern Art and have played several games with different groups. It's amazing how different each has been. It's funny to see the connections in the way each person handles money (e.g., thrifty) to how they play the game. My wife, for example, has a hard time bidding much over half the estimated value, which can be good with the right group, I suppose. My brother-in-law, on the other hand, has little problem parting with his money, and usually ends up many times bidding very close to the EV. Not sure which strategy is best, but it's interesting none-the-less.

With one of my groups it seemed a bit "everyone wants Louis" but with another it was most "I bid here so you won't acquire that ring..."

Ninja Burger - Barrel of laughs when we played it with some friends who are also role-playing gamers. Played it with some other friends who are more quasi gamers and have never been RPGers - not so much fun at all.

I think Munchkin would most likely be similar, I would suggest it with gamers who are D&D* players from way back, but if they had never played D&D I would be much more likely to suggest something else.

* The lack of a preceding "A" and any reference to edition number is entirely intentional.
