Some games are a pleasure to score, others are a bit clunky, while a select group are so painful that they appear to have evaded playtesting entirely. Please add...

GOOD. Goes from zero to the target score of 121, with a colour-coded track for each player. Each score marker is a peg that sits snugly in a hole: there's no chance of it being bumped to the wrong score or off the track entirely. A crib board comes with separate markers for each player's current score and previous score, allowing errors to be undone. Finally, there's a set of smaller scoring tracks to record games won. Even if you never play a single game of cribbage, a four-player board is well worth getting as a replacement for some of the woeful Eurogame scoretracks that appear below...

BAD. The original crap scoring track. It goes from zero to 49 in a game where scores exceeding 100 are common, and as an added bonus, the track has several switchbacks, which can lead to inattentive players pegging negative scores. On the upside, meeples make good stable pawns for scoring.

UGLY. In a triumph of style over substance, the China scoretrack is a tiny depiction of the Great Wall. As with the Carcassonne track, it's about a third of the needed size. Rather than sturdy meeples, top-heavy cylinders are used for the scoring pawns, and these have a habit of falling over and rolling across the board whenever a score is pegged. The icing on the cake is that each square on the track has room for just one player's pawn... in a five player game.

GOOD. Moving on to pencil-and-paper scoring now, San Juan stands out with its comprehensive scorepad. There's ample space to record VPs for all four players, with lines that remind you to score unusal cards (Chapel, Palace), and prompt you to do so in the correct sequence. The score sheets are double sided, and the game even comes with a golf pencil. Lovely!

BAD. After a relaxing game of Lost Cities, the players must solve ten equations to find the final scores. On the upside, at least the numbers are printed on the cards, and there's a good player-created score sheet floating around.

HONOURABLE MENTION. It sounds clunky in theory, but flipping over bean cards to score the gold coins on the reverse works very well. You never know exactly how the other players are positioned, but you can tell who has the biggest stack of beany moolah.

Samurai ranks as one of my top 3 favorite games. However, teaching the end game scoring has always been very clunky. It is intuitively easy to 'feel' the goal of the game once you 'get it' but almost impossible to explain clearly to a newbie.

Your opponents look at you with that blank stare, "Say what?!"

Let's see there Jim, you took 3 tricks, but your bid was 2, so you get -5 for missing your bid, add back 3 for the tricks, oh and look you received a -5 card in that one trick so that puts you at -7...carry the two, find the area under the curve...multiply by pi....

See that scoring track right behind the tower? Guess what happens when the tower is full of cubes and there are a couple of scoring markers behind it? Yup, lift the tower, score it, and then pick up *all* the cubes of a color and place them on the map. Including the score markers.

I've placed glass beads of various colors in my copy of the game...

In this game the idea behind the scoring mechanism is good but in practice it's a bit clunky. Constantly moving the meeples around to indicate the 1st and 2nd majority holders in each color works in theory but it just means that what you end up doing most in this game is counting! Every turn you are counting up everyones points in your head trying to see where you fall in relation to everyone else and by how much. However. these meeples are just indicators of 1st and 2nd majority and the actual scoring is tracked on paper at the end of each year. We have found it is much easier to use a 'scoring' track and place your meeples on it. It lets you see at a glance where everyone is in relation to each other for each animal type as well as trees. Much more useful.

Scoring in this game should be pretty simple. Most cities visited wins. Each time you visit a city you put one of your markers there and at the end of the game you just add up all the markers for each player. Easy, right! Well not so fast! The markers are small, narrow cylinders which almost seem to be designed to fall over. One bump of the table or nudge of the board and the game halts as everyone attempts to remember just were they had been and place there markers back where they had been. Whoever produced this obviously didn't have a) kids, b) cats and c) common sense!

I've always liked the elegant base 10 scoring track for 3 Stones, along with the beautiful metal pegs. More games could incorporate this elegant mechanism that takes up so little space.

I've been surprised how many people have got confused, though. Maybe if more American kids had learned to use an abacus. :-)

Good game and the scoring is not difficult. What gets confusing is when you start scoring and say things like; "Move the yellow and blue 2 spaces up on the green track and the green 1 space up on the red track. Now move the red marker 1 space forward on the yellow track." It can get confusing as you can tell by the picture.

BAD: I love Pueblo, it's a great game. But the scoring track is a nightmare. The track spiralling out from the middle is confusing enough, but in addition the colors are arranged in circles such that it's very easy to stay in the same color area instead of moving onto the next colored area on the scoring track (for example moving from 35 points directly to 16 points because you're following the light blue ring). Every time I play I have to score VERY slowly to make sure nothing bad happens.
