Armageddon was the first pre-gunpowder game I ever played. The scenarios were interesting and the unit types like chariots, swordsmen, skirmishers, bowmen, and IMPROVED bowmen made for some enjoyable games. One of the key factors for success was the use of various leaders since they had such a profound effect on movement and combat.

William the Conqueror's unique diceless combat system made it an interesting play since it was different from anything else when it appeared in 1976. The campaign game that combines the battle of Stamford Bridge with the Battle of Hastings (Senlac) is a good challenge for the English player.

My favorite recollection about Ancient Conquest is the combat result that reads, "Your attack is smote, says the blood of a goat." This game requires four players to do it right. You get a good feel for the broad sweep of Ancient Near Eastern history as the kingdoms and empires you control rise, expand, contract and die in the course of a few turns--though the game can last for several hours. I recall a few enjoyable all-night sessions with this game way back in the 70s.

Chariot Lords is Clash of Arms Games remake of Ancient Conquest and Ancient Conquest II. CoA cleaned up a lot, made various army types (like chariots) perform differently, and changed AC's hex movement to area movement. The game still takes a while to play, but it's very enjoyable.

After reading Caesar's commentaries, I just had to have Caesar's Legions when it came out in 1975. The Romans are pretty tough in this game, but if they're not careful to combine their force they can get hurt (I know, I lost ignominiously once by letting the Germans overwhelm a few isolated units). CL is a decent operational level game of the wars on the Rhine Frontier. I enjoyed playing it way back when.

Rome at War: Fading Legions attracted me because of the period it covers (Late Roman Empire). The scenarios are all pretty interesting; many of them being the battle of Julian the Apostate--and of course, Adrianople.

Avalanche Press' first game in the series is Rome at War: Hannibal at Bay, which covers the 3rd Punic War in Africa.

Both games use the same system, which is interesting in how it differs from other boardgames. Avalanche Press may have been trying to give RaW a miniature gaming feel, but didn't quite make it. They're not compelling games, but I'm happy I own them.

Barons' War covers an obscure couple of battle in English history. I own the game, but I have not played it yet. It looks to be an enjoyable game and I look forward to my first play. The map and counters are beautifully done, which is typical for Clash of Arms. However, my counters don't line up front and back, so I've got counter info that's cut off on the back. After paying a lot of money for the game, I'm disappointed that it's messed up like this--bad quality control. It makes me very wary of buying anything from CoA.

I had include a naval game and Trireme is the one pre-gunpowder naval game I have (the AH version). The system is pretty good and has a minimal amount of record-keeping. The game is very like Wooden Ships and Iron Men in how it plays--only you get to ram things!

This is a new game on the scene, but quickly moving to the top of my must play list.

A unique initiative/turn system gives the battles a very fluid flow - and it plays quickly. A lot of fun is packed into this box.

Highly recommended!!!

(Hmm, I better go rate it I guess :-) )

Much more obscure than Caesar is this odd wargame loosely recreating the events of Homer's classic. It's unusual because combat is all one-on-one (counters represent individual heroes), and no stacking is allowed. One of my old faves now lost to the mists of antiquity...

THIS is the 'successor' for some of the previously released SPI/S&T 'Ancients' games, while the entire 'system' was a vast improvement over those. It is so much FUN when you can 'pit' various 'Armies' from antiquity against foes for whom they might not ever have actually 'met in the Field of Combat'!

Barbarian, Kingdom and Empire is a strategic-level wargame of barbarian invasions of the dying Roman empire. The unique twist is the barbarian tribes, intent only on conquest and plunder, evolve over time into kingdoms with more powerful but more expensive units and with limited social concerns demanding part of the kingdom's budget, but still powerful enough to continue expanding. And the kingdoms eventually evolve into empires with even more powerful and more expensive units but with heavier social concerns placing them on the defensive. Eventually the empires can't keep up with the social costs and they collapse into anarchy, and the player starts another cycle as a new barbarian tribe. New players may join the game at any time by starting a barbarian tribe, and existing players may leave at any time by simply collapsing their tribe/kingdom/empire, all without disrupting the flow of the game. Players score VPs each turn for control of cities so it is easy to compute victory by dividing cumulative VPs by number of turns played, allowing meaningful comparisons between early-exiting or late-arriving players. This was the first game to simulate the evolution of empires, and was later copied freely by Rise and Fall and modeled more abstractly by Vinci.

Probably my foavorite ancient game, I know it isn't for everyone. You maneuver around, usually with a campaign ending with a big battle. Many gamers don't find this rewarding, but it was how ancient warfare went. The best ancient game for learning your history I've seen!
