Opening some games I have wondered what the box architects were smoking when they designed this one. Others things just detract from the game play.

Feel free to add additional games that have puzzled you.

The inspiration for this list. In the image to the left you see possibly all the game components except the game board. Simply put this box could easily have been 1/3rd the size. Then to top it all off: small cards, the bane of my boardgaming existence!

Early printings of Wings of War: Famous Aces came without any box insert at all. And to boot, all of the contents, sans the rulers and play boards (which aren't required, really) could easily fit in a box 1/4 the size. On the other hand, putting it in this size box at least makes you feel like you're getting $30 worth of game...

Later printings had an insert, and later this summer we'll actually see blister packs for the game, which makes the most sense as far as packaging goes.

Great game but this tray for Arkham Horror is next to useless. In the end I simply tossed the thing out and put all the pieces in bags and it works much better for me. The smaller cards especially barely fit in the slot provided for them.

I love this game, I really do. Wonderful game components which is why it's amazing that the box for them was so poorly done. The biggest problem is the game boards don't really fit inside the box, especially the two piece grail quest board. Here's a picture showing the grail boards and how they are longer than the box tray. In the end the boards for the game stack higher that the box edges so the lid never really fits all the way down.

The tray itself isn't really badly designed (at least all the pieces fit in it like they should) as much as it's so cheaply made. The thing is tissue paper thin. Even when empty when I took it out of the box it was to thin to support it's own weight and buckled. It split at two of the corners. Even in this picture on the left you can see where this tray has buckled on two of it's corners. Best advise to people who own this game is never try and take the tray out of the box.

This is about the HiG edition, I don't know if the problem exists in the other editions too. The board has such a stupid size that it is too long to fit in the "recess" of the inner box frame but it is too small to fit well upon the frame. And because the shorter side fits well in the recess, most of the time, one side drops lower...

Two major component-related complaints about a game I love to play:

1: The solid, dark green base for the cube tower was a bad idea. Because you can't see through the tray, nobody but the people sitting right next to it can see combat results, and have to beg for a play-by-play description when armies come tumbling out of the tower and into this opaque tray. A transparent tray would have been a better idea. Better still, a base that simply holds the tower upright and lets the cubes roll out on to the table so everyone can see them!

2: The choice of colors for armies in this game was terrible--black and brown?? What were they thinking? "Hey, why use easily visible colors like white, orange, or pink? Screw that! Let's use dark colors that are fairly hard to tell apart, and really hard to see under even the best conditions! That'll give 'em their 'fog of war!'"

In my copy of Attika there are two little spots at the end of the box for either the Amphoras or the deck of cards. If you put the card into the right slot they are almost impossible to get out without bending them (or tipping the box upside down) because there's no gap for your fingers to get in to pull them out. But the spot that has the little gaps for your fingers on the left side is just slightly too small for the cards! It's frustrating because otherwise this is a BRILLIANTLY design box that perfectly fits all the components and boards.

Personally I love the box! and I carry it where I go to play. My box is organized into two "floors". In the inferior one two plastic boxes, with all the counters into it and The hexagons in the original plastic bag. and in the superior, separate with the cardboard the plastic units in ziplock bags the instrutions, all the cards in the original little box and all the other stuff.
Yes... isn't perfect. But I can carry without problems.

I've had issues with games like Magna Grecia (which requires you to keep the punched cardboard "sprues" to fit everything back into the box correctly) and Goa, with the awkwardly-sized board, but if I had to pick one game to demonstrate the worst-designed box I've ever seen, it would have to be Don.

The picture doesn't quite illustrate the issue, but note that the bottom of the box is half the height of the top. Note also that there is a small slot in the back of the lower part of the box; this is where you're supposed to place the cards, which stand up vertically. The orange chips are HUGE, and go in the other side of the box. What results is that the top of the box sits on the bottom half, crooked, and the cards will get squished or bent. It makes no sense whatsoever.

I bought a deck box from my FLGS, replaced the orange chips with some mini poker chips, and stuck everything in there. It works much better, and takes up half the space of the original box.

Yeah, I know -- Fantasy Flight uses a generic insert for ALL their Silver Line games, and it helps to keep down the costs for said games. I still think it needs to be addressed.

Citadels is a deck of cards with some butterscotches. It could have gone into a much smaller box (like the German edition), sold for a bit less money, and we wouldn't have had to worry about all those extraneous counters (Does anyone actually use those?). In fact, what with all the discussions on how the role cards wear out, it would be nice to see FFG do something like überplay did with their edition of High Society, and have the role cards done up as tiles. They would hold up much better that way.

I should also address games like Magdar and Drakon, which have the same insert, but are even bigger offenders of the Horrible Insert Rule. Trying to stack tiles in those inserts is damn near impossible.

We are given a stack of monopoly-style 'AH bucks' instead of historically correct currencies, whatever that is. I remember somebody defended in the last issue of General that there wasn't a dominant currency during that time and AH cash is as good as any. I'm not sure but I still feel dealing with ducats or crons would create a better sense of that Age. I believe, as this picture indicates, that European versions of the game corrected this somewhat by having 'ducat' instead of 'AH' printed on the paper money. Oh well...

I have this box. And I have the game, elsewhere. The box must be the least practical card game box I have seen. When you pick it up, you pick up the lid only. If you are out of luck, the actual box joins the trip for the first bit, then drops out from under the lid and the cards are scattered over the ground.

I guess this box only works if you never move it. If you glue it to your shelf and then just lift the lid when you want to take out the cards, it might work.
