As I'm sure is the case with many users here, it is my job to supply games for the holidays. All holidays. Including vacations (I originally typed that as "vaccinations"; maybe I'd supply games for that too).

This year, since we're making one extended car trip with two stops so that everybody can meet our new wee one, I need to provide games that work with two distinct groups: my family and her family. Gaming tastes are quite different (I play Euros like Agricola and Princes of Florence with my family; we play a lot of abstracts and Hey, That's My Fish with hers).

However, my first packing attempt filled the trunk with three reusable grocery bags totally full of games. Since my wife was not keen on leaving any of my son's things at home, I had to gently let a few games know that they would not, in fact, be celebrating Christmas with us this year. These are those games.

Feel free to add any games you're leaving behind this year, for whatever reason.

I was asked to "bring that game where you get people to use your town and you get points for it." I then guessed which game he meant, incorrectly, TWICE. This leads me to believe that my games are not quite as diverse as I thought.

He meant Princes of Florence. I guessed St. Petersburg first, this one second because of the big table of Aristocrats.

We had a tradition when I was a kid. It was called Game Day, where we'd wake up really early in the morning on December 24th, and we'd play games in the living room all day. Our goal was to "waste the day," which in hindsight, is probably exactly what we did since we played a lot of Monopoly, Life, etc.

We keep up the tradition nowadays, largely with more... refined fare. However, I'm not sure the festive atmosphere of Christmas Eve is really enhanced with an utterly silent, brooding two-hour game of Caylus.

Nothing says Christmas quite like black-and-white angular boards and stacking pieces with that special, holiday clink.

Ultimately, I swapped it for Hansa Teutonica, largely because bringing another 2-player game isn't very social. But Hansa Teutonica? A 2-5 player affair where you can revel in the peacefulness of Christmastime by displacing each other's cubes? That says Feliz Navidad to me.

My brother's an actuary. This is exactly the kind of boring math sh*t he ought to love.

Lost out to: dinner. There's no way we can claim the table for as long as we'd need it.
