I work with a guy that I'm interested in getting a lunch-time gaming session with. If we end up playing a lot, who knows, may spread into non-office gaming.

He used to be into RPGs, and I recently did the first step of telling him to bring in a game he's been playing with his wife, Quoridor (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/624). I'm thinking of taking next step and bringing in a game.

Got any recommendations? We don't have anywhere to spread out at work, so games with small footprints (like Quoridor) are good. The games should also come in at under 45 minutes. I'm thinking that perhaps games that are _like_ Quoridor may be good so that the transition isn't too awkward.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You may want to try Go. It plays pretty quickly if you use a small board, or a quarter of the standard board.

I'd recommend Dungeoneer. Since your friend is already familiar with RPGs it might be a good theme for him. It can play in a lunch hour and doesn't take up a lot of space.

I would recommend Blokus as a good 2-player game that will be under 45 minutes and have a small footprint, and it's a great gateway game.

I would also recommend Lost Cities as an excellent 2-player game that is well under 45 minutes, has a tiny footprint, and is a superb gateway game due to its simple rules but deep strategy. Blokus, I forgot to mention, also has really simple rules but a lot of strategy.

What we are dealing with here is a perfect engine, a gaming machine. It's really a miracle of evolution. All this gamer does is sleep and eat and place little meeples, and that's all.

i'll add Fjords 'cuz it's my new fling. fairly small area needed, but probably not as small as the initial one you mentioned.

This is another good 2 player game, that you should be able to complete in under 45 minutes. However, as you might be able to tell from the picture, it might not meet your small footprint requirement. It helps to be familiar with the Carcassonne games, but not necessary. It is not quite the abstract strategy game, but it might fit the bill.

I see DVONN and YINSH have already been mentioned, but I thought I'd add it to the list for comments.

This was going to be my suggestion as well, as these are all great abstract games.

I used to play magic during our lunch period in school. Its very easy to get a few games of magic in under 30 minutes. And for about $20 dollars you can get two preconstructed decks to play with.

I've found that one can never pimp his own GeekList often enough, so let me point you to one of mine, where I summarize the 2-player games a buddy of mine and I played on our 30-minute lunches:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist.php3?action=view&listi...

Odin's Ravens was the favorite for both of us, but to be fair, we were both just getting into the Eurogame scene, so we overlooked a lot of other great games. Plus, we were limited to the games I owned, which was pretty meager, at the time.

i often play this game with my girlfriend (she actually requests it now) when we eat out for breakfast and are waiting for our orders then continue while we munch away. going by your criteria this game could be a good start for you and your co-worker.

a step up from pure abstract (a very small step) and fits your criteria. my girlfriend often requests this one when we go out to eat lunch. the rules also provide for two versions (one more luck based, the other more strategy). works just as well with 2-4 (i have never played 5) so if someone else got interested they could easily join in.
