I'm sure many of us have well-meaning friends and relatives who try to pick out games as gifts for us, but don't know enough about our tastes, our collections, or gaming in general to make really good choices.

If you got a gift this year that you don't want to keep, post it here. Bonus points if there's a funny or embarassing story to go along with it, or if the game is just crazy-bad.

Maybe if we get enough people posting here, we could even work out a trade or two. One man's trash, as they say....

My brother (who is at least as big a geek as I am), has excellent taste - most of the time. Though he is a geek of epic proportion, he is not a boardgame geek, so he has to rely on recommendations from others when choosing games for my family. Last year he gave us Dominion, which went over famously. This year - Munchkin.

Now, I am not one of the people who hates Munchkin with the white-hot intensity of a thousand suns, but I have played more than my share of games, I've heard all of the jokes, and besides, I already have a first edition copy and several expansions. This is the new edition, so it's not even really compatible with my older version.

New in shrink - I'm open to trade offers..

EDIT - Shout out to my FLGS, Galactic Comics. They let me trade in the copy of Munchkin for the full retail price in store credit, even though it wasn't purchased at their store. They said that they were happy to have Munchkin on the shelf because they knew it would sell, and would serve as a gateway to other sales later.

As a result, I will now most likely wind up applying the store credit toward the purchase of a much more expensive game. So I get a better game at a lower price, and the FLGS gets a good sale, a copy of a guaranteed seller, a happy customer and a shout out on BGG. Everybody wins. Except Books-A-Million, that is. I'm OK with that.

Brother in law thought process: I know they like boardgames. I know he likes the Grateful Dead. This should be a hit. We actually got it last year. It is still in its shrink.

I don't like the show. I think the CBC sets up poor schmucks to be torn apart by the fat cats sitting in their comfy chairs with their stacks of money. I am typically right-wing-ish, but this classless exercise in the North American class system (have money or don't) really bugs me.

yuk

Plus, there's a card shown on the back of the box that says "Steal 100K from another dragon." I'm fairly sure the show doesn't allow that!

I was given this a few years back by one relative. We played it & I hated to the enth degree, in fact if I could rate this a negative I would. It's my number 1 hated game, so I gave it to my daughter because she seems to have a slight flaw in taste it seems. Guess what I got this Christmas from my well meaning brother, yay I now own it again. gulp The funny thing was my husband wasn't there when I received this hell-in-a-box, he was up at the motorhome talking to his relatives back east. Later that night my brothers & nephew were talking about KB when my sweet hubby proceeds to tell all how much I totally detested it thinking my brother was talking about getting the game for himself.

Lesson learned: If you don't talk to your family about board games you'll end up with bunnies.

The best thing I can find to say about this is that it's got some funky train-eeples which will find use elsewhere.

I'd quite like to find a way to use the double-12 dominoes as a mechanic in a game design: it seems to me that there are lots of good dice and card mechanics but no domino ones. This makes me sad.

Of course when you open it, you say: "Thanks, this game is a classic." You can make a bet that the shrink wrap will never be broken. I am lucky, as an Eastern Christian, we celebrate our Christmas on January 6. I have one of my gifts all set.

I love my parents... but they just don't understand.

They gave me a glass set of the game the Tic-Tac-Toe.

Its basically like those Chess glass sets where one half is clear and the other is frosted, and the piece are about 1.5" wide give or take.

Don't get me wrong, esthetically its lovely looking, but egad!

I cannot even bring myself to add to my "Owned" collection.

Anyone want to trade... Really... I'll probably take anything. cry

There is actually nothing wrong with this game. Really wanted it for Christmas. The only issue is that two people listened. AKA I've got an extra copy now. DOH! Maybe I can get a even trade for it.

[originally I posted this on another forum]

Ouch, the pain of this is still raw.
It's still Christmas Day and I'm posting this.
I was too polite to say anything at the time ...

While sitting around the flickering Christmas tree, sharing presents, my sister handed me a wrapped box announcing that it was a group present from "all of us" - my two siblings and their partners (two doctors and two office workers)

I was pretty excited to see what they'd all chipped in to get...

SPACE-OPOLY!!! (Not to be confused with Spaceopoly )

It's a re-themed version of Monopoly with identical rules.
Go directly to the Black Hole, do not pass The Sun, do not collect $200.

"You don't have that already do you?"

Um ... no ... not really ... soblue

But adding it to my games collection, it will join FOUR other versions of Monopoly I've been given.
Two of which they gave me in previous years.

They'd given me
* Monopoly: Here and Now
* Anti-Monopoly

Both of which are still wrapped,

Others had given me:
* Monopoly
* Summer Heights High (Monopoly-based merchandise for an Australian tv comedy series)

Oh by the way ... I don't actually like Monopoly. If I had to play one, the silly Summer Heights High isn't too horrible.

I'm not really a games snob. I play Pictionary, Jenga, UNO, Catan, Dominant Species etc ... just not Monopoly.

I know there's a particular chain of average games shops that always have a rack of these cheap Monopoly clones eg: Dog-opoly, Cat-opoly, Horse-opoly, Princess-opoly etc I'm assuming that's where they found this game ... but I'm sure even at such a shop, if they'd asked the shopkeeper for advice, she'd never have recommended one of these.

So, probably $5 each ... you could say "well, it's the thought that counts", but I'm not sensing much thought went into it either.
