Being an only child, i used to consider it a very rare but awesome experience when i would find a game that i could play all by my lonesome on a rainy day.
There arent too many out there, thats for sure. Most times i was forced to try to play games like Risk or Monopoly playing with an NPC type opponent that i would play for. Not much fun but better than nothing.
Thinking about those rainy days earlier got me musing about games out there that play very well for 1 player. I cant think of any but 1 off the top of my head, but im sure you guys can come up with more.....

Arkham Horror, while pretty insanely difficult for 1 person solo, is actually still a pretty fun game to take on yourself if no other gamegeeks are in the vicinity.

This one is enjoyable solo, esp. when using the Friends & Foes expansion.

I can't vouch for whether its a great 1 player variant as I haven't played it yet period, but Ingenious does have solitaire play that might be good.
We have to try this soon.

With advanced rules runebound can be played with 1-player variant. Still pretty easy, but playable.

Empire Builder and the other Mayfair crayon rails games work very well with 1 player. You simply keep track of how many turns it takes you to "win", and try to beat that number next time.

While I'm sure this is far superior to play with a group, I've played it solo about three times to get used to the rules so I can teach it to my group. I've played with three knights each time. It's been fun.
No traitor like in the lovely shot to the left but, ah well, at least you don't have all the finger-pointing and nasty, sidelong smirks.

This is a great game to play Solo!
I played a game with myself just the other day while cooped up in the car on a long drive.
I lost, however, as Me the Seer outed Me the Werewolf on Turn 6 . Me the Werewolf tried a counter-Seer Reveal, but Me the Villagers didn't believe Me the False Seer and Voted to Lynch Me the Werewolf, instead.
Great Fun!

Take 1 or 2 or more characters and see if you can accomplish the victory conditions. I believe there is a Quest system somewhere on the net too.

This plays extremely well solo. The Goblin Hordes are controlled by the game system no matter how many (or few) players there are.

You just made me think of another one that i used to play on those rainy saturdays solo. I bought this game in 1979 and still own my copy. I used to set up the board and basically go to war with the NPC orcs, who, like you mentioned in Empires in Arcana, basically move on their own based on a set rule. Was very fun!

I downloaded a pdf off the Internet somewhere entitled Dungeoneer Version 2.1 Optional Rules that includes some options for playing Dungeoneer solitaire-style.
I think the solitaire game is actually better than the official rules since it is:
1. simpler
and
2. you don't have the balance issues you normally have when you have 2 or more players. Depending upon the dungeon layout and the quests you are dealt, the game can be very unbalanced between players.

If you like Wargames, this is a Great Solitare game. The game system is a bit complex, but the Japanese (the famed Tokyo Express in the Solomon's Campaign) run by the game system are DEADLY.
Quite challenging and fun, especially if you gather up the campaign rules published in the Avalon Hill General.

I have played a few solitaire games of Taj Mahal and think it's pretty fun. Get the rules here on the 'Geek.
Basically you are playing against 2 dummy players who each start with two of the special cards.

Board Game: Go
[Average Rating:7.66 Overall Rank:121]

While Go is supposed to be a two player game, I have become totally addicted to playing this by myself. Some people compare this to chess... I more or less loathe chess. This "pawns" chess all over the place in terms of depth and strategy. I originally learned the rules, hoping I could get some of my friends to play it with me. No such luck. People seem to be unduly intimidated by this game for some reason, even though a child could understand the rules. Yes, you can get ridiculously awesome at this game. But it's just as fun if you're a total moron at it, as long as you enjoy time-consuming strategy games.
Well, I became addicted to this while playing it on a piece of paper with decorative glass blobs from the local craft store. I was so addicted, I'd play it while eating my breakfast. It's that fun. (For those who like the strategy, anyhow.) I now have some really awesome plastic pieces and a wooden board. You can spend a ridiculous amount of money just on equipment for this game, or you can make your own for next to nothing. But it is something that I could play two or three games of in a row and not be sick of. It's an addiction! And if you play both colors seriously, you can even learn a little bit by doing it, as long as you get a feel for how it's "really" played. Which you can do by replaying games out of magazines or playing against a computer, or playing go problems online.
Deep and interesting... and something this solitary game player's collection cannot go on without.
