I have been a Euro gamer for the past 10 years. Some of my favorite games are Modern Art, Intrige, Settlers of Catan, etc. Recently my 13 year old son and his friend have shown interest in gaming. Specifically more of the longer war type games I vowed never to go near! Below are the games I have recently purchased or want to purchase. These may be considered transitional war games. Let me know if there are others I have missed. Games that play well with two or three are preferred. Thanks.

Axis & Allies - I purchased the updated version of Axis & Allies. We have played a practice round and are still trying to get our head around the rules. I would place this more in the war game arena than Euro. This seems ok for three.

Wallenstein - Played this once recently. Definately more Euro than War game. Kind of like El Grande. Did not seem to play well with three?

Struggle of Empires - Seems like the perfect transition game. I have read the rules a couple of times but have not played it yet. More War than Euro? Alliances may not work for three?

Axis & Allies - D-Day - I'm trying to get a copy of this in trade. Seems like a good transition to the full A&A version. Also looks good for two.

War of 1812 by Columbia Games is a good transition wargame. Has elements of attacking and defending with land and naval units. Simple rules and a large dose of luck in battles means anyone can play it and come out on top. After several plays, all with non-wargamers, they enjoyed it and have played again.

This is a good one to get going into wargaming. Columbia block games are a ton of fun as well. Do it now!

Per my comment under SoE. This one may be good to check out with group you want to play with.

I had to add this. A Game of Thrones, and the expansion is simply the best wargame I've ever played.

I know that someone might add a comment below that I'm wrong and explain how badly made and unbalanced the game is. This has happened about everytime I've listed this game on a GeekList.

Still I list it, because when you got a favorite, you want the world to know about it! AGOT is the only wargame that my friends actually wants to play again and again. The different houses is a bit unbalanced, but that only opens up for some good diplomacy around the board. Often you will need aid, and knowing friends from foes is a good thing.

Then the game also reminds me of euro games with all the wooden pieces in the box.

This might be one to check out, too. It takes a while to play, but the rules aren't daunting; and it's a fun experience. A little less complex than Axis and Allies, not a wargame, more of a watching empires grow and shrink game.

Viktory II could be considered a transitional wargame and supports two-six gamers. The difficulty of gameplay is less than a normal wargame and it has lots of replayability thanks to a map of rearrangeable hexes.
