Every once in a while I see a game that is themed to a certain activity or interest that I'm involved with. I like those games. In fact, I tend to buy them without looking at ratings or game play descriptions.

Now that my game collection has peaked (200 games is all I have space for - now its buy one get rid of another). I just realized that I've bought enough of the 'personal' games that I think I can describe myself by them.

Here's an attempt at doing just that. Warning this list might bore you if you don't know or care about me, but it was fun to write.

I begin my self-reflection quest by selecting a place, and not an activity for one reason:

Four years ago or so, without knowing anything about designer games, I walked into a game store and found this game. Being from that island (But currently living in Boston), I just HAD to buy it. Its a good thing that this was a good game otherwise I never would have kept going...

Anyway, I regard this as both a place but also an interest: I probably talk about my home town (San Juan) more than I should. I go back for a couple of weeks a year in the winter and visit my family and friends. I stock up on quality rum (Don Q Gold!) whenever I can. I'm always on the lookout for quality Puerto Rican foods (Either material to cook or restaurants). I check out a local newspaper every day.

I doubt I'll be moving back any time soon since I like it here very much, but I still keep my island close.

My profession and hobby: Software Engineering. I write networking software for large training simulations with a small company out here. Its great! Every day means playing around with state of the art games and these fools actually pay me for it!

I bought Programmer's Nightmare without knowing absolutely anything about it. Sadly, it was a hit or miss affair. Hit, because I really like it - and I'm pretty good at it I think. Miss, because no one else I know seems to like it so I can never play it. Sigh.

I'm a board game geek! Really! You wouldn't have guessed it by the fact that you're reading this list here, I know.

My collection is as big as I can make it without displacing my roommates (Tempting). The best thing about Board Gaming: all the wonderful new people I've met who've just shown up to my game night. Thank you all for playing with me!

I've been dancing since I was 13 but ever since I discovered the wonderful New England dancing scene (Yes, its better than Puerto Rico's. Strange) I can't stop thinking about it.

I am completely and utterly addicted to Salsa dancing. I dance at least 3 times a week - one of them with a local performance group. Numerous times I've scheduled my vacation time around specific dancing events I want to attend. Even then, whenever I go to a new city I look for local Salsa clubs. I've been known to go out dancing with a sprained ankle and limp home afterwards. I went out once with a broken wrist and a cast - using the opposite hand to lead everything. Another time I had a separated shoulder and danced anyway, icing my shoulder every half hour or so to keep it going.

Seriously, this is a crazy addiction and I probably need an intervention.

As for the game.. Its a light dice rolling game that won't blow you away but is short enough to make a great filler

My bike's current value is approximately double what my car's current value is. This makes a lot of sense - the bike has more than double the mileage over its lifetime than the car. Biking in Boston is a match made in heaven. Its simply the fastest way to get around. No car or public transportation system can match it. Plus, you know, its fun! The winter puts a damper on things, but its still bikable for all but maybe one or two weeks of extreme snow/cold.

Breaking Away is a wonderful game that was worth the difficulty in getting. I'm amazed on how well it encapsulates biking strategy into a mathematical system.

I think there is a clear correlation between computer gamers and board gamers. In what is, I think, the only unsocial activity that I do regularly, I grew up with computer games and continue to do so. I especially love the puzzly/thinking games such as adventures. As far as consoles go, I don't really play them nearly as often but I do love the two player face to face games such as Dance Dance Revolution or Super Smash Brothers.

Sid Meier's Civilization was a game I bought purely because I love the computer game. Its not a bad game, but it my world of space limitations its box is too big to justify keeping a less than perfect game around. I'm already gearing up for Railroad Tycoon and Pirates! to take that spot on the shelf.

Martial Arts: Tae Kwon Do. Four years ago, I joined a local Dojo as a curiosity more than anything (See Item 12). I didn't think it was going to stick, since this isn't really my thing. But then I discovered that that particular Dojo had an excellent community of people and slowly became the source of my closest friends in this city. I think many of the people attracted to TKD have the perfect combination of geekiness, and adventureness that I cherish.

I bought Duel because I couldn't really find a good martial arts board game. Duel does have a lot of the strategy used in sparing tied into a neat little package. I just pretend the sword is actually a reverse turning kick.

No I am not gay. This entree has nothing to do with its pronouncination.

I bought Cape Horn due to my love for all things boatlike. My friends in high school / college used to go out sailing for hours. Then we'd stop at an uninhabited island, have a little party and get back half drunk (Luckily, sailing drunk is easier than driving drunk). When I moved to Boston, I immediately joined a sailing and windsurfing club.

I have this fantasy that one day I'm going to have enough money to buy my own boat. In the mean time, I live out my fantasy by buying little wooden boat models and, of course, playing this cool racing game.

I admit, I don't dive very often. Its really expensive and locally, its only possible during a certain time of the month. But diving is just one of those things i'm always fantasizing about. The combination of adventure (see 12) and weightlessness/flying is IMHO one of the greatest feelings in the world.

I paid a LOT for this game. But how could I resist? Its just such a perfect theme, and the game kept getting compared to T&E! I have to say, the $130 were well spent.

I've been following College Hockey ever since I started University in the states. Its the only 'watchable' sport I'm passionate about.

Since they don't really show College Hockey on TV I get stuck with buying an internet feed and listening from there. However, I've been seen driving 8 hours and painting my hair red (Cornell school color) to catch the championship games every year.

As far as playing, well I'm really bad at it which is no surprise given my tropical heritage. I did sneak into an MIT Alumni league a few years back and get to play (low skill) games enough to make the winter pass by without driving me insane.

Oh, and I have a confession to make. I do not own this or any other hockey game. I actually get my fix by purchasing Street Soccer and pretending its Ice Hockey.

My summer sport of choice: Ultimate Frisbee! Its kind of in the fritz lately due to shoulder and wrist injuries but I'll be back!

Oh and umm.. I guess this entree deserves an explanation. Under most local league teams, players have a round of rock, paper, scissors to determine who gets the Frisbee first. Sometimes this same game is renamed cowboy, ninja, bear or my favorite cat, tinfoil, microwave!

I love exploring. The world is full of all these incredible things that I have yet to see or do. The rush of adventure and discovering something new is one thing that you can never get tired of.

Sometimes I hike up a mysterious mountain. Or white water raft down an unknown river. Or park my car in a strange town and walk/bike around. Other times, I take a look at the local adult education listing and take a class on the thing I know the least of. Or ask random people what things/activites they like and try them out myself!

Sadly, exploring in 'Discovery Island' is a simple matter of getting lucky and finding a landmark before your opponent. It could have been so much more, but I traded it away in disapointment.

In all honesty, I can't define myself without my friends. I'm a very sociable person who always tries to find the best in people. I think as a consequence I've been blessed with a wonderful and large cadre of friends. They are the best people in the world and I am incredibly fortunate to have my life touched by their intervention.

If I'm not doing any one of the things above, you will very likely find me hanging out with my buddies having a social event of some sort.

Life is best when shared among friends.
