One of those little benefits of doing work for a game company is that on occasion (maybe once a year) I end up doing a gaming con for work reasons. DragonCon 2004 was one such con. So beforehand I had decided that I'd like to look back into boardgaming as it's a hobby I'd not pursued since I was 10. Looked for some games I wanted, didn't find them, but I did find Ta Yu. It looked really cool, and they had the german and english version. I thought the German one would be the best way to start working on a collection... and had to find the rules. So I found them here... joined to download... and now, I read about boardgames and geeks almost everyday. And I'm also several hundred dollars poorer :-D

Christmas 2004. I'd decided to buy some board games for my two youngest sons - something we could play together. After making choices based on what I thought they'd like, there was this game that looked intruiging. Sounded good, looked kind of cheap (well, certainly not as slick as their games). What the heck, I'll buy it for myself.

Guess which game ended up being played most.

Initially, BGG was just one place among many where I explored this great game.

Eventually, of course, I just had to start exploring what else BGG had to offer ...

I was hunting for the rules to Conquest of the Empire for an almost complete copy found at a thrift store. Since the rulebook was missing, I hoped to find a rule or two on the Internet with a Google.com search. What I found was Board Game Geek and much to the detriment of my finances about a thousand games I'd like to own.

Ironically, I was introduced to BGG by a wargamer friend who sent me a link of a new wargame he bought and that link led to BGG. I don't remember what that wargame is but when I got to BGG, I discovered the joy of Eurogaming and thanks to BGG, I bought Princes of Florence. I also bought Princes of the Renaissance, Traders of Genoa, Lord of the Rings ...

Even more ironically, I'm now back to wargaming, ever since I discovered on BGG that wargame design has improved greatly from those AH days and made wargaming fun again.

I like to check out the newly added articles on the front page of Wikipedia. One day, there was an entry for this game, which sounded really interesting, plus a link to BGG. That was in March. Since then, I've purchased ~25 games, and learned at least 12 others beyond that, but have never played this one.

I'm a longtime reader of GAMES magazine, and back in 2000 or 2001 they ran an ad in their annual buyer's guide for Funagain. This was a major breakthrough for me, for prior to their discovery I only purchased games from local game stores that were located far away from me (such as 3trolls). The presentation at this site was particularly inviting, as they described each game, and more often than not listed reviews for the games I was interested in. And then, lo and behold, at the bottom of each page was a collection of icons that brought you to several sites that had additional information on the game. One of these sites, of course, was Boardgamegeek. It was akin to discovering a treasure trove when all you were searching for was a couple of nuggets. It was Euphoria then, and it's still a daily thrill to this day.

Back then, there were no English editions of German games and the main sources of English rules were Mike Siggins' Rulebank - an off-shoot of Sumo magazine - and the Gaming Dumpster - which was being established (by Frank Branham, who went on to design Dia de los Muertos) at about the same time as the Rulebank transferred to the Game Cabinet http://gamecabinet.com

Pretty quickly, the Dumpster became the best place to find new rules first. Imagine the disappointment then when we found out it was being closed down. At the time, it seemed like little consolation that most (all?) of the content was to be transferred to some site we'd never heard of ... called Boardgame Geek.

We played dozens of games, and my brother-in-law tended to win. So I googled "acquire strategy," and lo! a mighty website did appear.

About three weeks later I bought a copy of Puerto Rico, and it's been downhill from there.

We had grown tired of CCGs for a variety of reasons earlier this year, one of which was due to the seeming desire for every CCG and CMG maker to develop "Type II" style play that forced you to buy MORE and MORE cards and miniatures to stay competitive.

We had been having a blast with Epic Duels not long before Episode III came out, and decided to try and find more board games. Only THEN did I find out about The Queen's Gambit. Holy crap, I really wanted this!

Sadly, every place I wanted to order it from had sold out of it, and no more in the pipeline. So I'm searching all over the web, and find this site. "What's the point? This stupid site doesn't even sell the game!" I fumed....but then looked deeper.

16 game purchases later (and a four or five one brewing, and a host of games coming in trades and from ebay), and I think I'm hooked. I can't even think about spending $20 on a starter deck and three booster packs when that same $20 will get me a complete game.

Sadly, I *still* don't own a copy of the Queen's Gambit, as I keep getting sniped on ebay and no one will trade it. *sigh* I'll figure something out, but thanks to this little game I have a whole new addiction.

(My wife is really happy about BGG, I'm sure)

I grew up playing many of the original MB-GM series (Axis and Allies, Conquest, Fortress America). A few months ago, I got an itch to play some of these again, and while I was Ebaying around, I ran across a copy of Shogun (still in shrink). So, I snapped it up, even without ever having played this one. Then I started poking around the web to try and figure out if this game was even any good. And of course, I ended up here.

My family had gotten into a Rummy and Spades craze, and we even started talking about pulling out some other games out of the closet. I went on a quest to find the best board games at Toys R' Us, having no clue that Euro-games even existed. I was beginning to think that there were no board games for adults besides Monopoly etc... I stumbled across this site, fell in love, bought several games, then continued to religiously visit this site for about 2 years before I ever made my first post. I know, I am weird. That is my boring story.

I was doing research on vintage Parker Brothers games and looked it up on the Geek.

When I went to a local game store I saw all the cool expensive (Euro) games with wood bits that I'd never heard about.

I started reading up on them at the geek and the rest is history.

I made my frist gateway purchase at ThoughtHammer and started raiding thrift stores and Ebay for board games.

I now own a copy of the Wonderful game Of Oz.

I had this game when I was a kid, and it had just been sitting there, because I couldn't find the rules any more. First, just the advanced rules were missing, but when I searched I could only find the basic rules here. That was probably mid to late 2003. I bookmarked the site just in case. Then, earlier this year, I was cleaning out my bookmarks, and came back onto the site. Sure enough, the advanced rules were now there. I got them and a copy of the basic rules too, just in case, and I've been coming back daily pretty much since then.

My father-in-law was visiting from Australia. He was interested in continuing his learning of American History. The in-laws were really over to visit with our new son we had brought home a few months ago after adopting in Russia. So I knew unlike one other visit they made, we would not get to go out and visit anything really... The first trip they made, he was fascinated with the Civil War. So I bought this, the Amercian Civil War by Eagel Games (which I have yet to play), and Zertz after a google and turning up BGG. We had the best time playing this and he kindly let me represent the South. We enjoyed Zertz a lot too - his joke (in his thick Scottish Broagh) though whenever he lost a game was that he used to like the Belgians... Kris even helped answer a question off his website.

So after he left, I researched some and sent him Hammer of the Scots. I look forward to playing that a lot when I go down and visit next. I will of course let him play the Scots and I will be the Bloody English. I am certain we'll have a good time as we joke a lot when we play...

I was in Toys R Us looking for something to buy my 5 year old nephew's birthday...he was at the time obsessed with Lord of the Rings, more or less as much as I was at his age about Indiana Jones and Star Wars...

Saw this...thought...hmm...could be fun!

Wrapped it up, brought it over for him. Opened it up, thought "oooOOOooo...a 3-D mountain to climb!" and "oooOOOooo...the one ring scoring counters!"

Only to then play the game and find out that it isn't even really a game at all!

Sad and mad...I thought to myself:

"There must be an online site that reviews boardgames................"
