Used to be, I thought that if games were to be divided into categories by the number of people involved, you'd have two kinds: solitaire, and everything else. Now, I'm starting to understand that this is not the case. There are really four types: one-player games (solitaire), two-player games (duels), 3-6 player games (family), and 7+ player games(party).

I think this is an important distinction, because the marketing divisions of most game companies seem to feel that if a game can be played with three or four players, it can be played with two. But two-player games are very different than "family" or "party" games. There's a zero-sum element to them, where any reaction to a player's given action must come from either the other player or the game itself. If you discard something, either it will help the other player, or it won't. There's no "third-player factor" to mess with you.

Here's where your input helps! I'm posting this GeekList partly for science, and partly because I'm always on the lookout for games that my wife and I can play by ourselves. Any help you can provide would be hugely appreciated!

DISCLAIMER: This GeekList is NOT for games specifically designed for two players. I know all about Lost Cities and the Settlers of Catan card game. There are plenty of GeekLists just for the best two-player games. What I'm interested in are games that are frequently played with three or more players, but scale down nicely to two. It's okay if the game needs variant rules to be turned into a duel (i.e. Puerto Rico), but please be sure to mention that.

So... I'm going to get started with two games. I thought about adding Lord of the Rings (the co-operative Knizia game), but I haven't played it yet with only two people. Also, I'm hesitant to add Puerto Rico, only because I've played the official Alea two-player variant once, and my wife wasn't into it (though I enjoyed it). If you've had positive experiences with either of the above as a two-player, please add it to the list.

Let's get started!

So far, this is the most elegant example of a family game that scales down into a duel. It works just fine with two players.

Through the Desert plays just fine with 2 players. Only some small changes (number of camels available, smaller playing board) are needed and the experience is almost the same.

A light romp with two experienced players. My wife and I typically finish games in an hour, give or take ten minutes. The random setup means no matter how much you want to route-optimize, it'll all be different next time. I recommend making sure all the tele-gates and relics are on the map (sort them first and add in randomly-chosen penalty markers and spaceports until every spot will be covered).

This is a great game with 4-6 players. I'm not particularly fond of the 3 player game, though I know many who are. The 2 player game is excellent, but you must play a very different strategy than a crowded multiplayer game.

Fette Autos is a racing game using the same mechanism for 1 (!) to 6 players. It is even playable with 7 players with a minor modification of the mechanism. Two player games are very enjoyable wether playing standard rules (one car per player) or using team rules (two cars per player)

Not sure if you want a game this long, but this one plays great with two players. It's good with more, too. But with two there is no negotiation (or whining). You can state outright that, "Yes, I did put that token there just to mess up your plans!" You can't usually do that in a multiplayer game. :-)
All of the 18XX work well with two, IMO.

Java is a very good game for two.
Actually in my opinion Java is at its best with two, since the waiting time (which is its main problem) becomes acceptable.

This one of the most addictive action game with motor works great with 2. Each player get two bars, one for your left hand and other for your right hand. So both starts with 6 chickens. We play "tournament rule" i.e. if you win, you start with one less chicken. So first player wins 6 times win the game. Well, you can make up a variant however you want it to be... definitely worth trying. (make sure your left hand doesn't kill your right hand chicken!)

Bohnanza - My wife and I like this a lot as a two player game. It has separate rules to the three or more player game and is basically a substantially different game, but we enjoy both two and three plus player versions.

Opinion does seem to be divided on the two player version though, see some of the comments to the list below. My advice is try it two player and see if you like it.
