I have been meaning to do this list for awhile; but Brian Morris (mrbeankc) with his recent list on cool looking games has prompted me finally get off my butt (figuratively of course) and make it. Mine is a bit different... Here is the gist of this list - I want to help Publishers know what we like about games. What makes us buy them other than good design. First, here is what I don't want - anything to do with game play/mechanics/play testing. This is within the realm of the designer for the most part. What I want to cover is what makes us go ga-ga over the game that the publisher controls. Below are the categories I came up with... Feel free to add one of your own with what you think are good examples for that category. I am not trying to single out any single publisher as being better or worse, but simply trying to show what I consider good examples that others may want to review how to approach the issues. Also feel free to add comments (with photos if you like) of others in these categories. Here are mine - let's here from you!

Great Wooden Components: Theta, Gigamic, Pin seem to do a nice job with their bits. Other individual games that seem to have great wooden bits are Krieg und Frieden and Cathedral. The Sac Noir version of Bausack looks awesome also. While simpler, the Columbia Block games also seem to be wonderful. Nice feel to them and well painted colors.

Great Plastic Components: This to me is more of an individual game by game basis rather than an overal company. I chose Nautilus, but other ones are Missippi Queen, Lowenherz, Joan of Arc, Ballonrenne, Sumo!, Rheinlander (I woudl like to see what the new one looks like), Tank Battle (yes the old one), Zertz, Australia, and Senjutsu (talk about well made plastic pieces that fit together).

Great Tiles: Hands down in my book is Sunda to Sahul. The puzzle pieces are strong and sturdy with beautiful glossy artwork. Another is Wettstreit de Baumeister - nice thick cardboard and gorgeous artwork.

Great Boards: Java, Tikal, Clue: The Museum Caper, Haunted House (a plastic house!), Nautilus, Wallenstein... This is a harder list to narrow down: but generally I look for sturdiness, compactness in folding, and great artwork.

Great Metal Components: Conflict by Parker Brothers - yes that old game. I am a little blank on others at the moment.

Innovative Components: Vertigo, Green Ghost (rubber bands for snakes and the ghost spinner), Hang in There (rotating tress and music), and Tahuantinsuyu (glass components) all have innovative components.

Great Cards: Druidenwalzer, Joan of Arc, Krieg und Frieden, and Burn Rate really square it off for me here. No doubt that getting good artistical help here pays off.

Top Notch Publishers: This category is sort of ones you feel do an awesome job overall - bringing it all together. Tilsit, Theta, and Kosmos in my mind do an excellent job consistently. For kids games, hands down Ravensburger and Haba do great jobs IMHO.

Awesome Packaging: I know very little about the game, personally I don't think there is a "great" pirate game on the market, but the treasure chest all of the amazing bits, and awesome map comes in makes me want to spend the $100 just for that!
