Another year, another heap of money spent on games.

Last year was closer to what I think is 'average' for me—around $400. Not sure about this year, but it might be a bit higher this time. Certainly, money is a bit better this year. On the other hand, I've been wanting to catch up on a number of graphic novels from the last decade, and start buying books again, so that may divert funds.

In some ways, I'm not much of a MMORPG person. Computer RPGs are very much a secondary genre for me. But, I've been in a friends & family WoW guild for years, and it is a great way to be easily social with a bunch of people I don't get to see much of.

But, being a secondary interest, that has generally devolved into me just showing up for dungeon/raid night. I get to have fun with my friends, and pay attention to my multitudinous other hobbies the rest of the time.

Then there was some drama, and Blizz has really been sucking the fun out of the game engine for the last couple expansions.

Smudge has been seriously looking for something to replace WoW for most of last year. The Old Republic sounded promising... but we've heard the promises before. Then she got into the beta, liked it, hit the first instance, and had so much fun she instantly decided to get it.

I got into the beta the next week, and agreed. And then I ran out of money for the year. So here I am, joining in on the party a couple weeks late.

I've loved the Age of Wonders series ever since I discovered it most of a decade ago. I've got the first two games in a cheap-o package edition, but I've never gotten around to getting Shadow Magic, sadly the last game of the series.

But GoG had it on sale this last weekend, so I picked it up.

Festung Budapest
Europa Universalis: Rome Gold

I'm weak. I have more than enough ASL material to keep me going for a long time, but when I saw the photos of the box, I ordered it anyway. Naturally, two days after the charge went through, I found I had another expense in the form of a root canal. If I'd known that was going going to happen, I would have canceled so I'd have the extra money.

The same day it came in, I got a notice that EU: Rome was on sale for 75% off. I had already enjoyed playing my dad's copy, so picking it up for myself at $2.50 was a no-brainer.

Actually, Mark gave me a copy of this as a (very) early birthday present. Of the few AtO games we've had a chance to try out, this one is easily my favorite (helped by the fact that the rules are much tighter), so it's certainly nice to have my own copy of it.

I can resist anything but a sale...

I first encountered AGEOD last year, when Paradox gave away Birth of America 2: Wars in America for free. I haven't done more than poke at it, but it looked interesting. So, when I saw one of their titles 75% off at GamersGate... I grabbed it in the hope that I'll find time to give it a proper spin around the block.

Paradox had a customer survey in March. The 'thank you' for filling it out was a free copy of Cities In Motion.

I generally find that I admire such games far more than I enjoy them. But the price was right, and I'll probably poke around with it at some point.

Well, Smudge decided she needed to go dice shopping. So, while we were at Game Kastle, I needed to get something....

Patch had gotten a look at my copy of Festung Budapest the previous weekend, so I was in something of an ASL mood. Also, I had narrowly missed out on an auction of a 2nd Ed rulebook; if the store had had one of those in stock they would have made another $60....

As it was, I picked up one of the MMP scenario packs I had not gotten.

When The Devil's Cauldron: The Battles for Arnhem and Nijmegen came out, I watched from the sidelines as it got some very positive reviews. Company-level systems are pretty rare (I can't think of any others off-hand), and there is something of an attraction to the idea of having something at each level of WWII combat.

However, I've got enough big games in my life, so I was content enough to let TDC go by. No Question of Surrender was much more interesting though. The situation has potential, the size is right, and I get to see what I think of the system for relatively cheap.

Of course, I wasn't expecting it to take four years, and I had pretty much forgotten I had ordered it when I got an expired credit card notice from MMP.

Now, I just need to get it on the table....

I wasn't paying attention when Here I Stand came out, but the talk about it certainly grabbed my attention, and I got the reprint last year. It's a bit long for our current gaming schedule, but it is exactly the type of game I like, involved with a great delivery of the 'feel' of the situation it deals with. So, the sequel to HIS was an automatic purchase, though it'll be a bit before it gets to the main group table, as I want to put HIS through it's paces another time or two first.

Another GamersGate sale, another purchase. In this case, it's the first of Paradox's WWII series, Hearts of Iron. I was tempted to just get the entire series (or nearly so) in one fell swoop, but I've got plenty to keep me busy at the moment, and got it mostly for interest as Paradox's third empire management game.

The local game store was holding a flea market day, so I stopped by to see if there was anything I was interested in. I was afraid that it'd all be eurogames and RPGs I wasn't interested in, but was surprised by the number of '70s and '80s vintage games for sale. I ended up getting:

GURPS Ogre
BESM Dungeon
Thirty Years War: the Great War 1618-1648 (S&T #173)

As well as a few non-game items:
Riding Bean
Samurai Heraldry (Elite 82)
Kawanakajima 1553-64 (Campaign 130)

There were a number of boxed games that caught my eye, but I didn't end up getting any of them:

The Rise of the Roman Republic (not at $100, thank you)
Wiz-War (very nearly picked this up for $15 with a damaged box, but a good interior)
Emperor of China (I've seen an interesting review of it, so it was tempting.)
Conquest (Earlier printing than I'm used to seeing.)

And one other that I can't remember the name of right now (spaceship cardgame from '83). Fairly rare, but there were two copies there. I've played it twice, which gives me more experience than either of the owners there....

I generally would like to keep up with the Action Packs, but this one didn't really grab me at the time, and marked the start of me not getting them, even though I really like the concept of the boards in #6 and #8.

Anyway, managed to get this for well under retail off of eBay, which is good, since MMP recently marked it as out of stock, and who knows when/if it'll get reprinted.

My copy of Civ IV is just the original release, so when I started paying attention again, I wanted the expansions. The easy way to do that was to get the Complete version, which was available at Target. I put off getting it, hoping for money and the price to go down. And then it disappeared from the shelves.

Today, it was back, and $10 cheaper. Sold.

Advanced Squad Leader Rule Book 2nd Edition
ASL Journal #9

Several years ago, I promised Mark that I'd give him my old 1st Edition ASL rulebook—as soon as I bought a 2nd Edition one. Since I'm gaming with Patch online just about every week, I intended to get one very soon. Well, not so much....

So, now my old rule book is well worn and well loved. I nearly got a 2nd Ed for fairly cheap on eBay a bit over a month ago. That sparked in me a determination to stop futzing around and get one already.

While I was at it, I figured I might as well get Journal 9, which I missed last year due to lack of funds. I really do like to keep up with the Journals.

So, thanks to having some extra money going into this month, happy birthday, me. (A few days early.)

I've always thought that BESM was a nice simple system that tackles anime. Sadly, the heyday of the system was while I had extremely little spare money, so all I got at the time was main book, even though the various series-based books looked very nice.

So, I just managed to pick this up off a BGG auction.

ASL Journals are always automatic buys. A new VotG and FB scenario helps pique my interest, but there's always good scenarios and articles to be had. Thanks to Patch, I already have the FB summary card, but a spare is good. The 'rules chronology' card looks really handy.

Personally, I don't care for the separate scenario cards. They're useless for my organization scheme, so I'm going to copy/scan them anyway. The glossy paper looks nice, but I really prefer the extra-heavy paper the last few Journals have been on.

Haven't read it yet, of course, but the Series Replay is looking very nice.

Total for the year: $653.79

O-kay... this was an expensive year. This is even more remarkable when I note that the money is up nearly $200 from last year, and the number of items is down by about a third. I was figuring on ~$400-500 going into the year. The excess total was mostly powered by Festung Budapest and the new ASL rulebook.

2012 releases I wanted and didn't get (in rough order of desire):
Kingdom of Heaven: The Crusader States 1097-1291
Red Winter: The Soviet Attack at Tolvajärvi, Finland – 8-12 December 1939
Guild Wars 2
Star Fleet Marines: Module I – Assault
ASL Action Pack #8: Roads Through Rome
The Blitzkrieg Legend: The Battle for France, 1940
