Ciúb 2p ww x1
Underrated Lehmann gold
Tossing dice by fistful
Never lessens, ne'er grows old
and leaves me mooning, wistful.

Oh man, what a game. I can't imagine it playing it with more than two though, as the most fun I have in this game, aside from amassing ridiculous amounts of dice to chuck, is targeting the next spell about to be triggered by your opponent. In two player, this is a hilariously dickish tactical move, as you can see what dice they're amassing and what, possibly they're going for. There's even a PYL element, as, if you feel like you're about to grab a spell that turn, you can move your disc to an upper spell in anticipation. The player mats are thin garbage, the chips terrible bingo plastic (I replaced with wood, as is my wont) but if that's because all the budget went into the beautiful dice, I'm behind them 100%.

Also, took me way too long to realize it was pronounced "cube".

Also also, it's the best art Lohausen's done for a game, with Pi Mal Pflaumen being the possible contender. And that's coming from someone who does not like Lohausen.

Super Motherload 3p ww x1

Building decks and digging dreck
fast paced and unique
but miss achievements, you're a wreck
buried- so to speak
I though I had it in my grasp,
but Megan pipped by one

it seems my time is done.

Bam. Megan destroyed me... by one point. She doesn't find anything special about the game, which does not bode well for its status in our household, but I quite like its aesthetic, its video-gamey feel, what with the dig-dugging and the specialized short burst of deckbuilding.

Gingkopolis 3p x1

The future is for you and me
under the shade of the Gingko tree
But if you draft like that, you see
I'll bury you beneath the lea
The future may be just for me
'twere not for your points-grabbing spree

Such a good game. I'm a little bummed that it was a bit of a re-learning game, but am thoroughly excited to play it again now that I have the flow in mind. I love the clean, ingenious design, and the art is beautifully pink, like the insides of a perfect beef wellington.

San Marco 3p x1

What better place to have a spat
then on the face of secret cat?

Oh man. San Marco with three real uppity players is just a delight. We were discussing afterwards how Knizia and Schacht seem to make laconically pared down designs, putting a lot of modern euros to shame- and this game definitely falls in that camp. I choose, you divide, and area control. Not a whole lot else, but what is there is delicious and terrible. Also, the final banishment nuked a whole island off the face of the earth ("Anything but a six! Anything but a six!").

Clank 1p x1

Played with cards and cardboard stuff

did I play boardgames sure enough
or was it table-cum-arcade?

What an odd thought. I don't mark my thousands of games of Androminion or race AI, but I guess I marked this? It's an AI app that lets you play solo. Very well implemented, but also somehow lacking, as though the experience was less than either. Heck, if they released the event information, I might even just print out an event card deck instead.

Current Thoughts: Okay unlikely to part with this - it was the first game I really wanted that was out of print and took me years to acquire. I really liked it, but the 4p games seems dumb and I rarely have just 3p around. Need to get 3p together just for this.

Exhibition games have already started in Florida and Arizona. Baseball is right around the corner!
mbmbmbmbmb
Played a couple of games last night, so let me add these comments to the ones I've already made.

Lorenzo il Magnifico - I have one bad habit as a gamer. Actually, I probably have a lot more than one, but this is one I'm aware of. There are games that I'm pretty good at, but which I have trouble judging my position. This leads me to questioning during the game about how well I'm doing and then I wind up crushing the table. I'm sure this is very annoying to my opponents, but I'm honestly not trying to divert attention from myself, I just don't know the game well enough to figure out when I'm in good shape. The only solution is to improve my understanding of the games, hopefully before my group strangles me.

That's my introduction to my third game of Lorenzo. I continue to really enjoy this one, just as I have similar games from its co-designers, like Marco Polo and Grand Austria Hotel. In this game, I was dealt the leader that gives your uncolored pawn a value of 3 (rather than 0), which requires 7 Military Points and 3 Faith Points in order to play. I decided to focus on this nice ability first and was able to place the leader during the first round. I had another leader that required 12 Military Points, so I pushed that a little bit to place him. Then, since my military was so high, I decided to take advantage and grab a bunch of Territories (all of which have a Harvest ability). I picked up a Character that gave me a +3 for future Harvest actions to enhance this. Then I just focused on harvesting and Ventures (for endgame points).

All of this was very nice and I soon had a bunch of resources from my harvesting, but my VP total was still very low. Hence, my apprehension about my position. But I needn't have worried; my course of action from then on was fairly obvious and practically foolproof. The Territories and Ventures both provided good endgame points and I was able to push my Faith points to the maximum. I wound up with 126 VPs, more than 100 of which came from the endgame, and my closest competitor had only 71 VPs. A true beat down. Now, I just have to be able to figure out what I'm doing right (my last two games have been big wins), so that I'm able to repeat it, as well as not to be so accidentally obnoxious in victory.

Although there are still games to try out, right now, the race for my personal Game of the Year is between Lorenzo and Great Western Trail. The tiebreaker may come down to me being good at the former, while I'm still trying to figure out the latter. It also helps that Lorenzo handles 4 players in 2 hours, while we struggle to play GWT with 3 in only 2.5 hours. Still, as much as I like the Italian game, GWT feels more ambitious and is probably deeper, with more paths to victory. I need to play both some more and it should be a very enjoyable exercise to see which of these excellent titles I prefer.

San Marco - Lorenzo went so quickly that we had time for one more game. One player departed, so we had three. San Marco was proposed and I agreed, but not without a bit of grumbling. It may be heresy on my part, but I'm convinced this game plays much better with 4 than with 3. But it had been a very long time since I'd played with either number, so I gave it a shot.

I think I now understand the reason for the common wisdom that SM should only be played with 3. Our game played quite fast, with the splitting and selecting usually happening pretty quickly. Consequently, I can see a generation of players accepting SM as a middleweight, at best, and a relatively short, mildly thinky pastime. When they try it with 4, the game takes longer, too long for the effort they're willing to give it. So screw that, they say--this is strictly a 3-player game.

But just because I understand the sentiment, doesn't mean I agree with it. My group was introduced to SM when it first came out and we always played with 4. The need to get in your opponent's head when splitting for 2 (so that he'd leave you the cards you wanted all along) made this an involved and deliciously difficult exercise. I don't view the 4-player game as a middleweight at all, but a heavyweight; not Through the Ages heavy, but certainly meatier than something like Airlines Europe, which fits the middleweight definition about as well as a game can. While I like many middleweight games, I'll still always prefer a heavier design. So while my 3-player game of SM was enjoyable, it wasn't nearly as great as the many 4-player games I've played, in which the pie-splitting mechanism truly shines. Alas, my new understanding of the rest of the gaming world where this game is concerned does nothing toward changing my opinion about the best way to play it. If anything, it makes me realize that I'm even less likely to be able to play San Marco the way I want to play it. Oh well, first-world problems, I guess.

1st play: Excellent game and an awesome implementation of the I-split-you-choose mechanic. I've played Rialto in the past, and I can see that it was going for a similar vibe, but San Marco does it so much better. It might be STRONGLY best with 3 because of how the stacks are built, but a really fun, stressful game.
